I have been twice to Dinokeng in the last three years, and on both occasions left wondering if this really IS a Big Five reserve. Hours of driving and the only game we saw was warthog, impala, wildebees and zebra. I'd like to know what the game count for the other large animals is. And the map based on numbers remains ridiculously counterintuitive, despite hundreds of complaints by now.

I had read many reserved opinions regarding the presence of big 5 animals. To do justice to the park, I can say that we had the closest encounter with an elephant (it passed by the safari bus a couple of cm away). Furthermore we saw lion and buffalos. This was on a game drive of the Mongani lodge.

We enjoyed our discovery of Dinokeng. The park is not too big so we can easily see the diversity of animals and birds.
We appreciated its proximity with major cities.

Really lovely place to visit for some time in the bush. Many private accommodation options to chose from of also good for a day trip. Easy to get to from Joburg - around an hour’s drive to get to Tau gate. Buy the self drive option and get to explore the roads through the bush and lovely picnic spots (covered, clean toilets and an attendant at each). You may not see masses of animals around each corner but we did see a large herd of giraffe and quite a few other animals. The Big Five are a bit elusive and probably need a game drive (you can book there at various places) to see. Book online before going to avoid waiting times at the gates.

We took a tour with DRG Adventures, led by Keal, who was so patient, informative and engaging. It was our final safari of our trip, and it was simply outstanding.

It’s advertised as a Big 5 game reserve, however it depends on which side of the reserve you stay. The reserve is divided into north and south. The south side is where you can do self drives and have a number of lodges. These lodges provide game drives but only on the south side as they are not allowed to go to the North where most of the animals are. We were able to see 2 lions and few other species of antelope however we did not see elephant, buffalo, cheetah or leopard. Dinokeng management needs to find a resolution to this to enhance the experience of guests across the park.

What a wonderful bush experience. Absolut quiteness during day and night. Only the sounds of the bush. Yet its located not too far away from the highway that takes you quickly to J‘burg. The owner runs a small yet efficient eco agricultur. A beautiful small lake 30 meters off the lodge’s terrace draws in the animal for drinking.

Entrance fee over priced. Route map and directions are pathetic. Worse game park ever. Facilities dilapidated. What a waste of time!

I noticed a few people complain about the lack of big game, also some reviews mention that only certain roads can be used, while some of the camps provide Game drives and don'
t permit self drives. Can you please provide some clarity on this, as I get the feeling that this may be part of the reason why not much game is spotted. Your advise on this will be much appreciated.
thank you and kind regards,
Andre.

there are a lot of different options in Dinokeng. You can self drive or take a guided tour. There is only one gate for the day visitors to access. I have spotted a Rhino and her baby at the entrance of this gate. The private resorts have there own gates into the park, so you wont pay an entrance. Day visitors and stay over visitors that dont have free access need to pay. I have done several self drives and two guided tours. Me and the wife have seen a lot of game. The big cats are hard to find but they are there. Elephants, Rhinos and the big bucks you wont battle seeing. Depends on when you go and how thick the bush is. I still highly rate Dinokeng. It is also closer than Pilansberg for me
Good day May I please have a qoute on a family package 2 adults and 2 kids for the monthend of July...also may it include a game Drive... for 1 weekend check in Friday checking out Sunday

Good day, yes your vehicle will be sufficient, just stay on the sedan routes. Please take into consideration that all tracks are gravel road and more like bush tracks. Single Day Permits: R250 per vehicle (with up to ten occupants).
Two or Three Day Permit packages are also available at a cost of R380.00 or R450.00 respectively. So depending if you would like to buy a 2 or 3 day permit.
The conservation fees are a once off levy and is R30 per adult & R20 per child (2-12)

Hi, I will be having a few days stopover in Johannesburg and want to see the Big 5 while there, so Dinokeng sounds like a great way to do it. I don't plan to hire a car to drive through the reserve. Are there any organized tours I can just join, coming out of Johannesburg? Like a day trip or two-day trip? What are the costs?

Hi, we went to the Reserve because it offered a self drive facility. I saw that there are paid game drives but I do not know if they provide transport from Johannesburg. My experience is that you have to get to the Lodge or Camp and then you will be taken on a game drive.
