We had a fantastic tour of the Parco della Giara with our guide, Roberto, of Jara Escusioni. Roberto was knowledgeable, patient and friendly to all. Seeing the wild horses on the lake was so beautiful. I highly recommend it to all: adults and children alike.

The Parco della Giara is a nature reserve set on top of a plateau just above the towns of Gesturi, Tuili and Setzu and can be accessed from any of these three towns with an entrance to the park that provides an information booth. We entered from Gesturi and for a small donation (whatever you wish to give) we were provided with a map and the park rangers kindly offered us the use of their hut to leave our motorcycle clothing and helmets so we could walk unencumbered into the park.
We had been told there were wild Sardinian horses within the Giara and with the advice of where to find them (an approximate 1km walk into the park at one of the larger "Pauli", which, judging from our observations, we took to be a kind of wetland lake) we set off with not really much hope for actually catching sight of them. We had just stopped to admire and photograph the pretty Pauli Camisa (the very first wetland lake and only about 150m from the entrance) which was covered in lovely tiny flowers, when we heard a horse whinney!! We ducked back to the Pauli and there on the opposite bank was a beautiful, wild horse! Further down we saw another two with foals grazing on the water plants and then a futher three (2 mature and one foal). The magnificent horses have lovely glossy coats, long manes and tails and the ones we were privileged to see were quite unaffected by our presence. We were told by the rangers that those deeper into the park are more skittish but those nearer the entrance are reasonably accustomed to people. It was a magical experience and I got some beautiful photos (to be posted later).

This is part of my best memory of Sardinia, the plateau is magnificent, the nature beautiful, and when I saw all those families of wild tiny horses living in absolute freedom I almost cried of happiness. I wished all animals would be so lucky to live their lives in freedom, as they were meant too, like this little tiny horses, instead of being imprisoned, farmed and exploited. It's lovely to see how these animals interacts with each other, within their family or with other groups. How their hierarchy works in nature. Our guide from parcodellagiara.it was super efficient and explained us many interesting things!

I went to the Parco della Giara last September and it was the best day of the entire trip. Roberto was an amazing guide through the park! We saw the beautiful little horses, i cavallini della Giara, and without Roberto's knowledge and guiding, we could have never get so close to them. They are beautiful and worth the entire trip! The natural aspects of the Parco della Giara are also unbelievable! After our walk in the park, Lucia, Roberto's wife, delighted us with an amazing lunch underneath beautiful trees! It was the best picnic of my life. We tried all the typical products of the area and drank home made wine. I often remember that day and it puts a huge smile on my face. The visit of the Parco della Giara wouldn't have been the same without Roberto and Lucia because they made it come alive for us! Grazie mille e ci vediamo presto!

We visited the plateau on a cold, windy February day--as such, we didn't even see a single bird, much less any horses, cows, sheep, etc. despite spending a leisurely, enchanted 3 hours walking around.
You take a stunning drive up from Tuili, winding ever higher until you start to feel moments of vertigo, with the valley so far below that it doesn't seem real and then come up into a whole new ecosystem. There's plenty of parking and two main paths you can take from the parking lot. To the left is a fantastic Nuraghe, absolutely stunning, with some jaw-dropping views if you're brave (dumb?) enough to climb up onto the remains of one of the towers (we did). Disappointingly this area doesn't seem to be well-guarded, because several of the remains of the houses had very modern burn marks from campfires, and indeed the remains of those fires (and a few beer cans) scattered around.
Off the main path, you pass a small 'visitor information' hut that isn't--the map outside is all you get to look at, so snap a picture--and head in. The bike rental situation wasn't particularly clear; just inside the entrance there's a sketchy-looking trailer with some fairly unimpressed looking guys sitting around it, and a pile of dubious-looking bikes. No pricing, no real signage. We decided to walk, though in retrospect we might have chanced the bikes.
There are some stunning views across marshes, small lakes, and several Nuraghes. There are cork forests and really ominously loud high-powered electric towers bisecting the park. There are wild flowers and acacia shrubs covered in lichen. It feels more like the Outer Hebrides than Sardinia! Absolutely stunning, in a completely different way.
We were disappointed that we didn't get to see any of the horses (there were plenty of fresh tracks, but no joy) but all three of us thought this plateau was the highlight of our trek across southern Sardinia. Absolutely stunning, humbling, and beautiful.

We visited the Parco della Giara with Roberto of Jara Escursioni in Tuili. He picked us up at the nuraghe in Barumini and took us up to the park. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of the small wild horses that are unique to the park, and we did, not once but twice! A mare and her foal and another group of 5-6 horses. Roberto took us on a two-hour walk in which he explained everything from the flora and fauna to ancient techniques for building huts and the socio economic issues of the area. We saw two lakes, ate fruit from the "strawberry tree" (corbezzolo), and enjoyed the panoramic view from the plateau. Visiting with a guide is a must as it is easy to lose your bearings with no visible reference points, and I highly recommend Roberto! He's been doing this for years and his passion shows through.
It can be windy, so dress appropriately, and walking shoes are a plus.

The family we stayed with arranged for us to meet our guide Roberto at the main road in Tuili. From there he led us by car up the Giara.
Once up there he took us on a wonderful, light, hour and a half walk to a lake and back. At the lake we saw plenty of the famous horses from quiet close. On our walk we did see many other things, both natural and cultural, and Roberto explained a lot about it all - in English(!).
Afterwards we had some local wine, cheese and meat at the guide's office in the village.

We visited Parco della Giara with our two children. We joined with other visitors to make a group of 9, a combination of Italian, English and French speaking, across different ages. Roberto is an experience and attentive guide who managed to make the visit fun for all of us. The site advertised 1.5 to 2 hour walk but it ended up being a 3 hour visit as we loved the place so much and Roberto was happy to show us around along a bigger route. I warmly recommend this visit as it shows a part of Sardinia which is less well known than more popular destinations. Spring is definitely the best time to visit. If visiting in the summer avoid the lunch time walk as it can become very hot. Thanks Roberto we had a great time!

Our family went on this tour twice during the last few years, at different seasons, my wife, our son, and once my sister in law. The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful, showing us many, many examples of the unusual flora of the giara, and he knew exactly where to take us to see the wild horses. We also saw other wild animals. On one occasion he arranged for some of us to take a tour on horseback. Then he took us back to his store to demonstrate local products that were available for sale. The price was reasonable and the service was excellent in all respects, and we highly recommend this.

I saw a couple of horses just beginning the trek. After that, I saw some cows. Not bad to see wild free horses.

Written 17 May 2018

si possono portare i cani all escursione?
Written 27 October 2017
