The house was built in 1790 but remodelled in 1867 and then again in the Neo Georgian Style for Ralph Dutton (8th and last Baron Sherborne)(1898-1985) between 1936-1938. It was then heavily damaged by fire in 1960 and restored again much as it appeared in...More

We called off here on the way back home to Dorset, and were very pleasantly surprised. Everything seems so well ordered and the staff are smiling and helpful. One word of caution, if you are driving, beware the potholes in the road as you approach.

On a recent trip to the South Downs, we twice visited Hinton Ampner. It had for us, the advantage of being about half way to our destination, so made a very good place where we could break up our journey. Our small group of 4...More

We last visited here about ten years ago, the house had tenants then and was only open two afternoons a week. The gardens were o.k. but you could only view part of the house. What an improvement, the gardens now are first class, the house...More

If you go here go on a empty stomach. The portions are massive And real good value for money. The steak is about the best you can get around the area. The whole menu is fabulous

Garden has lots of little features, unusual landscape and the vegetable plots were former tennis courts. Do spend a bit of time to walk around, it's a big garden. House has a fire and rebuilt in the 1960s. Lot of nice furniture, apparently Georgian. The...More

Bluebell woods, dog friendly, picnic areas, lovely house, nice restaurant - not much to complain about. Restaurant gets very busy so be prepared to queue for coffee!! Also a bit expensive. Take a picnic and make the most of the gardens and surrounding open land....More

I left myself 3 hours to have a wander round because the entry price is one of the highest NT fees and I thought there would be lots to see - I was wrong! There are no information boards in the rooms like you see...More

I wanted to do the 4 mile walk around Hinton Ampner , I was wondering is there access to do this all the time or if it is part of the opening times and do you have to pay an entrance fee?

You can certainly do most of the walk, which is outside the NT-controlled garden. For anything inside you would need to respect opening times and fees, but I don't think it would affect your walk significantly.
