You have to open your eyes to enjoy the sublime view and not slip on the stones. It is accessible by car with a small parking lot at the top or by bus.
You go down for 30 minutes. The view is as beautiful from above as from below. There are few shaded areas along the way and inside the crater there is little air and it is very hot. At the bottom you will find the ruins of an old building and swings, time to gain strength for the climb which is much more difficult. Remember to bring enough water. There is a bar and restaurant at the start of the hike. It's not a loop circuit, you have to go back and forth.

Excellent place to visit and hike or just to take a look if you don't want to hike as its a large impressive caldera full of trees and plants.

We opted to hike both the rim of the caldera and down to the bottom where there is short circular path. Each trail is around 3.5k. We are reasonably fit and they took around an hour apiece. Technically easy but lots of incline and decline on mainly loose ash/gravelly tracks. Great coastal views from the rim trail. The interior of the caldera is shaded unless the sun is overhead.

Handy cafe/restaurant at the start/end point. Parking is roadside.

Plenty of walks here, but we wanted to just view the fantastic caldera. The main road around the rim has a pull in by a couple of cafés which is crowded, difficult to park & doesn't have the best views. Drive past this area to the golf club at the end. Park & enjoy the stunning view from this angle, then drive back & up the Pico de Bandana road to the viewpoint for a totally different angle. On your way down stop at the Caldera de Bandama restaurant for a delicious lunch & yet another fabby view, this time towards the sea.

The caldera was impressive and would actually earn 5 stars. I reduced 1 star because we took the wrong way.

Our intention was to take the path leading around the caldera and I had figured out with Google maps, where the path goes. But when we reached the place were the path starts, there was only one signpost showing the way to the caldera. We took that route and it was a wrong decision.

The path went steeply downwards in hot weather, bright sunshine and no wind at all. My wife soon gave up and started to climb back up, I continued down. The path was reasonably good and I had good walking stick. It was hot and steep but the views were terrific. On the bottom there was an old abandoned wine farm. I cannot imagine how they may have transported there wine to the market!

I fought my way back up the caldera and I am happy I made the trip. But what I would appreciate is another sighpost showing also the way around the caldera.

There is a direct bus (1 € 40 c per person) between Las Palmas main bus station and Bandama. Waiting for the bus back we noticed the shop of a local wine producer and had glasses of white wine there. Very good wine and therefore we also bought some bottles.

How-to-find this place: Locate the bus going to Santa Brigida. Go out of the bus at the stop of Bandama. The route to the caldera starts immediatly from the bus stop (on the other side of the road).

We drove from Maspalomas the last few miles up winding roads. Don't stop at the cafe you can drive right to the top, however there is limited parking. At the peak, there is an observation platform in the centre of a roundabout. There are great views if you come on a clear day. The crater is 1000 metres in diameter and over 200 metres deep with signs of an abandoned farmhouse in the crater and outlines of terraced fields up the sides of the crater. The is a golf course nearby

A highlight of our stay in Gran Canaria (where much of the landscape closer to the coast is, to be honest, ugly and ravaged); the 3.5km walk worked very well going clockwise, so ignore the sign to the Caldera itself (see warning in previous review) and follow the road toward Pico Bandama. Great views, and good exercise on the ups and downs. Important WARNING if coming by hourly bus 311 from Las Palmas: we (and a dozen or so other tourists) should have ignored the driver mischievously calling out 'Bandama'; unfortunately, we all got out at the village of Bandama, rather than the Caldera, and had 2km of road walk uphill to get to the start of the ridge walk. I suspect the local passengers on board have a good laugh about tourists' stupidity once the bus carries on to the Caldera without us.

The Bandama caldera can be reached via an easy road that allows you to reach an altitude of around 600 m. This altitude also has some widespread vegetation throughout the crater. It is therefore a rather vast concavity and can be visited entirely on comfortable paths. You can also visit Pico Bandama which presents a very beautiful panoramic view. The destination is recommended.

Narrow road to the summit. Watch out for locals and buses that drive in the middle of the road and don’t adhere to the speed limit. Lovely view from the top. Plenty of parking available on our visit. Fantastic view of the surroundings. No toilets at the top so plan ahead if taking children

A small narrow road off the main road leads up to the top. It winds it's way up the hill to a reasonably sized car park. Up a few steps to ghe top.The cafe is still there but hasn't been open for quite a time. A street seller selling local wares and souvenirs doent intrude on the experience. The caldera is just below you, you can see the path round the rim but only the brave should attempt this and it's a lot further than you think. The scene over Las Palmas, about 7 km away is magnificent, you can see the port side and the lovely bay and beaches on the other. It can get a bit breezy here, so a jersey or light coat may be needed. What you do not want to meet however is one of the huge tourist coaches on a narrow section of road because he is not going to back up. Enjoy the view.

It is easy to get down and really tough to get all the way back up again. It starts off with a pathway but quickly it disappears. Be careful when it's raining as it can be slippery.

As there is an old wine vineyard/distillery there it makes me think how they managed to get all the wine up haha. They do have a information board explaining the house there but not that part.

There are so many pretty flowers, green trees and other interesting plants. If you can I'd recommend a trip down to see everything there. Do explore most of it!

Unfortunately there are so many people carving names into the great tree there, such a shame to see.
