About
The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens reflect the life and extensive wanderings of Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, who grew up in Ireland, and whose life journey embraced several parts of the world. The gardens pay homage to the fame he attained in Japan through his incomparable literary descriptions of the people, customs and culture of that country. The Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens have a wonderful and unique story to tell. In their style and planting they contain elements of the gardening traditions of the countries and cultures traversed by Hearn during his varied life. The journey begins in a Victorian Garden to commemorate Hearn's happy childhood summers in Tramore. There is an American Garden, a Greek Garden and a traditional Japanese Tea Garden, in addition to a Stream Garden, ponds, waterfall and an extensive woodland area. The main elements of design, in particular the use of rocks and water and the plant selection, are influenced by the tradition of a Japanese Strolling Garden.

Finally got around to visit these beautiful gardens and I'm so glad I did. Visited with my mam in the morning. The gentleman on reception was so welcoming and informative. We started with coffee and lemon drizzle cake - the refreshments and views were worth the visit alone! The gardens are very well laid out and the information notes and wayfinding signs mean you get to see every inch of them and are informed. The gardens themselves are immaculate - you can see the love and attention that goes into them on a daily basis. Really enjoyed the visit and would like to revisit at a different time of year to see how they change in the seasons.

This is a gem of a garden! Very contemplative and serene. The story of his life adds to the experience. The site is so well used it feels like it has been there forever. Amazing views over Tramore and lots of stopping spots. It is steep in places so not good for people with mobility issues.

This garden is a beautiful experience with unusual plants and a great layout. I was surprised at the thought, planning and hard work that must have gone into it. It's well worth a visit. The lily pond is beautiful.

Visited this icon whst on holiday. It's a lovely, authentic and peaceful place to visit.

There's a treasure map for kids and a lot of benches for people to sit and take in the peace.

There are very clear covid markings and guidelines.

Sadly, not all of the garden is wheelchair accessible.

We stumbled upon these gardens visiting family in Tramore. Small but beautifully planned and presented. There are also lovely views out over the coast. Would be a beautiful spot for a small wedding or romantic stroll.

Great place to spend a couple of hours. Gardens are very well kept and all the staff are exceptionally friendly. Very knowledgeable as well as we asked a few questions in regards to the plants and the staff could answer all. Well worth a visit.

Enjoyed a warm welcome and had a delightful wander through the gardens, which are beautifully curated. The site is not huge so take time to slow down and appreciate the peace & quiet. Or do like we did and follow the paths around a couple of times :).
Wonderful to have the option of take away tea/coffee to enjoy on the terrace to savour the moment. Reassuring to see all the necessary precautions with signage, sanitizer etc in place.

Ive visited twice in the past, this time I was refused entry. I had a very small old dog with me (just like on the other two occasions) and I was told 'absolutely NO. This is not a dog park! Dog owners disrespect the roads around here and so no dogs are allowed!!' I was definitely not treating the gardens as a dog park. I had a small old dog and it was a hot day. It should be possible to be discerning. Ive just returned from the lovely CASTLEMARTYR hotel where I stayed..with my dog..and I didn't treat that as a dog park either. I am mortally offended and will not ever recommend this place again.

Hi Fiona, we are sorry you were unable to bring your dog, but due to the ornamental nature of the gardens, dogs are not allowed in the gardens, we apologise that this is the case but we will discuss it and if anything changes in the near future with regards to that ruling on small dogs we will put up a new notice and let people know.
