Great old building in the centre of town with a history going back to 1675. Was converted into a pub in the 19th century and then restored to it's former glory in the 1990s. Has regular exhibitions on different themes (1916 rising at the minute) as well as some local history

The Main Guard is situated in the centre of Clonmel on three junctions. It is a beautiful building and has been rebuilt. When we entered there was a lovely man who told us of the history of the building when it used to have shops/stalls under its arches and people from Irishtown who lived outside the towns walls were able... We thoroughly enjoyed our visit at the main guard- all due to the knowledge and personal attention of staff person extraordinaire "Colm". He gave us great facts about the history of Clonmel, as well as tips as to what more to see in the town. There was no charge to come in either. A real gem!

If you are very lucky you will encounter Colm Fennessy in the Main Guard. He is an encyclopedia of information about this building. The history of the building is the history of Clonmel, and of much of Tipperary, and of the Norman invasion and rule of Ireland. It is an architectural gem, in the Irish sense. A modest building, well... More

The building is far more interesting on the outside than the information available on the inside. Fortunately entrance is free so I didn't feel I was ripped off. I just think it would be a perfect place to showcase more history about the town, not just the building.

I had mixed feelings about the refurbishment of the Main Guard, having grown up with the Cooney's Pub version of it. There was an actual reason for me to visit it, in that I was doing a project on tourism and attractions in Ireland, for college. I made an appointment to meet one of the guides and was blown away... Great little place to visit and explore, staff were good at explaining information on Clonmel and the mid evil times, just boring is all, wouldn't really summon the energy to visit again

Tastefully modernised some years ago and is now a focal point in Clonmel Town Centre. It's a ready made stage for any occasion and Musicians from all over the world have played here during the many Festivals that held in Clonmel. It is also adjacent to Shops, Restaurants, Banks. Library, County Museum, and Post Office. It is also an ideal... More

The conservation of this landmark building is second-to-none. Meticulous and authentic attention to detail makes this an important local and national building. The exhibition of Hemphill photographs was also a revelation. All this plus a wonderfully personal talk by resident historian Colm Fennessy made the visit a most memorable one.
