I'd been here before maybe 20 odd years ago, and was pleased to see it's still as popular as ever. With communication via social media and smart phone now so ingrained in society it was even more amazing to see what the early pioneers of communication achieved. Well worth the money, with them the internet may never have happened.

HI, I'm glad you enjoyed your visit to the area, I am wondering if you went to the centre on Valentia Island as our exhibition in Tech Amergin is free entry. More

The history of the... More

An amazing feat of engineering after trial and error. Well worth a visit. The Cable Company ceased operating in 1962 with more modern methods available for communication. The Cable company employed over 300 people.

The story of the trans Atlantic Cable between Ireland and the USA is very much part of the history of Waterville, Valentia and Ballinskelligs. Many of the fine houses built by the Cable Staion Co. still stand but if you want to read about its history and see some of the many exhibits connected with the Cable Station, you should... More

Before the world wide web there were the "cables". With them it suddenly was possible to send messages from one continent to another in a relatively quick way. Today global communication is nothing special anymore, it's common use and nobody really thinks about the fact that text messages, pictures and movies can be transmitted around the world within seconds. It... More

This is an interesting history of the cable station in Waterville and the first telephone link across the Atlantic. Well worth a visit. Tech Amergin has a lovely atmosphere.
