The Burren Smokehouse Visitors Centre, Lisdoonvarna, was established in...

The Burren Smokehouse Visitors Centre, Lisdoonvarna, was established in 1995, to create a window for the smokehouse’s own products and other local gourmet products and crafts. We offer a video for our visitors that shows how our salmon is being smoked, starting from filleting to dispatch. The audiovisual is available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian and English with Dutch subtitles. You can taste our salmon and also look into our very first kiln – now retired – with its smokebox that had a facility for 25 sides of salmon to be smoked.Apart from a painting done by the late Cyril O'Ceirin depicting how salmon was smoked in Ireland thousands of years ago, you will discover our unique mosaics telling the story of the ‘Salmon of Knowledge’.Our Visitor Centre has become a popular attraction in the North County Clare area and welcomes visitors from all over the world. It is open all year round, please check our website – click on ‘Visit us in Ireland’ – to see the opening hours. The centre can also cater for groups of up to 50 people – booking in advance is necessary. In our crafts and delicatessen shop you can conveniently cover all the presents that you will need to bring home with you.The Burren Smokehouse is a family-run business that was set up in 1989 by Birgitta & Peter Curtin. We carefully source our Irish quality raw materials for the Burren Smoked Salmon, Trout, Mackerel, and Cheese. We control our own quality standards with backup of regular testing from independent laboratories and regular checks from organisations who certify us. The Smokehouse currently employs a staff of fifteen, and ships within Ireland and to countries all over the world through our visitor centre and through our website. We are associated with Slow Food Ireland and help organise the annual Burren Slow Food Festival which takes place every May in Lisdoonvarna. We are also member of Good Food Ireland and the Burren Ecotourism Network. We are passionate about our local and Irish foods that you can buy in our gourmet shop. Our range includes: * Our own smoked organic salmon, smoked mackerel, trout; we only use fish caught or grown in Ireland * Irish craft products, gifts, beauty products and clothes * Delicacies like jams, chocolates, biscuits, fruit wine from County Clare, mead, seaweed products, seasonings, honeys * Locally produced dairy, goat and sheep cheese specialtiesFree parking available, as well as access and facilities for the disabled. We offer a world wide mail order service in our visitor centre - pick from our wide range of products and have it shipped to yourself or your friends and family as a souvenir from Ireland.Feel free to ask us any questions you may have, we will be happy to answer them for you.

Awesome little shop, on the road between Galway and the Cliffs of Moher, following a brief and interesting "how it's made" video the head smoker ran us through his selection of salmon's both hot and cold smoked with a taster of one hot an one cold smoked, I can hand on heart say it is the first Salmon I've ever... Really a good place if you are into salmon. Saw the smokehouse so was good to see how artisans work and what the process is to create premium food products.

We rented Fuschia cottage for a week near Doolin, and visited the smokehouse twice during our stay as a family of four adults - both occasions we bought a selection of products and even mail-ordered some to family further afield. Canadian Mike from New Brunswick, is friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable about ll the products that they produce and sell.... More

Visited this intriguing place in late Sep 2016. Our lucky day - the "Smokehouse Guru of Hot & Cold Smoked Organic Salmon" , Mike from New Brunswick, Canada, was celebrating his birthday..........alone! After watching a fascinating video explaining the difference between the requisite processes of hot smoked & cold smoked (organic) salmon we helped him celebrate his birthday with a... More

We had seen the smokehouse advertised but also noted they had a fire recently. So we went anyway and the shop is very much open. There is a short video taking you through the process and the people behind the business. Reasonable prices for the products especially compared to the Connemara smokehouse which is expensive. Would recommend a visit and... More

We looked for the smokehouse, yet it was burned down. How ironic. Even though the restaurant was destroyed, the smokehouse remains active. We went next door to a sports bar to enjoy the food, drink microbrew beer and enjoyed watching sofa with locals. What a great time. The atmosphere was engaging, the food excellent and the beer enjoyable. And, then,... More

Dear David, Thank you for taking the time to write a review about the Burren Smokehouse. We just want to clarify that the business did not "burn down" though that would have been quite ironic as you put it. We are very much operational because the fire was limited to a small area in the roof. So the visitor centre... More

If your into smoked salmon, this is the place to be. The taste tasting was inspiring, but not as inspiring as eating the beautiful at the salmon. Worth a visit.

We stopped in on our way through the Burren area on our way to the Cliffs of Moher. The street level café had samples of the smoked fish, and you could have cold or hot smoked fish (which really depends on your personal texture preferences). There are opportunities for tours at certain times, but we missed the chance. It did... More
