Built by the O'Flahertys c. 1500, Aughnanure Castle lies in picturesque surroundings close to the shores of Lough Corrib. In 1546 the O'Flaherty's motto "Fortune favours the strong" and the powerful Mayo O'Malleys Motto "Powerful by land and by sea", were joined in the marriage of Donal an Chogaidh O'Flaherty and Grainuaile/Grace O'Malley. Standing on what is virtually a rocky island, the castle is a particularly well-preserved example of an Irish tower house. In addition, visitors will find the remains of a banqueting hall, a watch tower, an unusual double bawn and bastions and a dry harbour.

We enjoyed our visit as we travelled through the area on the way from Connemara to Galway. The castle sits in a beautiful setting. The location is fairly remote, so I imagine it would be difficult for large tour busses to make it back there, so it was not crowded.

I visited the castle with my elderly parents. The trip was well worth it. Friendly staff and a lovely driv down a winding road to reach it. The river adds character, thank you

We were driving from Galway to Connemara and saw the sign to the Castle. So pleased we stopped as the Tower House is not on the tourist bus trail which made for a very relaxing visit. Loved the very peaceful stole along the beautiful stream and along the path through the magnificent trees. Very easy to find our own way... More

Loved this stop. We enjoyed the history and the ability to explore the castle. You can climb up to almost the top of the tower. The grounds were lovely. This place is not handicapped-accessible.

Well preserved monument that you can take in en route to Connemara National Park. Very pleasant staff here and one young lady had done a great deal of research on surnames throughout the 32 counties which was of great help to me.

Aughnanure Castle is on the drive between Galway and Connemara. Be sure and stop, no buses go down the narrow lane leading to it, so it's not over crowded! We took a guided tour, though it's not necessary, it definitely adds more to the visit. The young lady we had was excellent and enthusiastic. It's great example of a tower... More

Not a commercial tourist attraction but a Tower House and ruins maintained by Heritage Ireland. Worth the visit with informative notice boards. A remnant of when the O'Flaherty's were the ruling family in this area. Being a member of English Heritage this entitled us to free admission!

Just a short drive outside of Galway City and you're at an amazing castle. Well laid out with new information boards. Great staff, so friendly and helpful. We always have so much fun there. It's so quiet and peaceful. Takes you back in time.
