It is one of three such stones in Ireland. Castlestrange Stone, this granite boulder displays the characteristic curvilinear ornamentation of Celtic flourishes called La Tène. These date from the Iron Age (c. 400 BCE – 100 CE), and were named for the site in Switzerland where such designs were first discovered and recorded.

The Castlestrange stone is a bit of a mystery - the purpose behind it is unknown, which makes it that bit more interesting. Well worth a view and very interesting to see. It is great that it is sitting out in the open like it was meant to. It would be great if the stables on the site were developed... More

We had trouble finding this place, however in our quest we ended up following a Suck (sook) Valley Trail. If you are having trouble finding this place. The first poster had excellent directions, but lacked distance, so you might find yourself unsure if you have gone far enough, the co-ordinates are: N53.58556 W8.27003. From Athleague you follow the R632 NNW... More

Follow directions provided by earlier reviewer. When you see the ruins of Castlestrange you know you are there; park at the gate and walk up to it. There is a picnic table beside it perfect location for one. I am glad it is available for tourists and visitors to see, for free, and not moved to a museum. Truly wondrous,... More

Finding the stone can be a bit daunting, but if you take R362 northwest from Athleague and turn right on the first L road as you leave town, cross a stone bridge, and you will see a very sharp turn to the right. Do not turn but take the private drive directly in front of you. Please drive slowly and... More
