Derreen is a woodland garden that has a selection of narrow paths leading to the sea. You can choose a short stroll of about 40 minutes or take all day discovering the 8 miles of paths. Many of the plants were brought back from the Himalayas by the Victorian plant hunters. There is a cafe selling lunch or a selection of delicious hand made cakes during the summer months.

This site is a lovely respite when driving in the Kenmare region. We stopped and wandered through several of the paths among sub tropical century old plants. Lovely views of the Atlantic and mountains amidst the calm of garden paths. The cost is minimal for the reward of calm and quiet. Highly recommend a stop here if in the region.

We spent a week in Kenmare traveling the Beara, Sheeps Head and some of Dingle and visited Dereen Gardens on our last day. It was a wonderful respite from the shopping crowds in Kenmare (which I'm quite sure were nothing compared to during the summer months) and from the challenges of both driving and being a passenger on those roads.... These gardens are based on an old arboretum and contain many old conifers, rhododendrons and the like. Very damp and with lots of mosses and lichens. Some areas have been cut down to allow for new plantings. The gardens consist of a number of meandering pathways with the whole area abutting the sea. It costs 7euro per person to enter... More

I hope you enjoyed your trip? It is very damp and very mild which allows us to grow all sorts of things that don't grow elsewhere in the UK. We had a really bad storm a couple of years ago and lost 87 trees in 10 minutes so the areas that you saw are being replanted. Hopefully it won't be... More

Derreen Gardens, a privately-owned estate near Lauragh, on the South shore of the Kenmare River, has to bd seen to be believed.. The atmosphere is extremely relaxing and the café + gardens are a delight for all the senses. Very reasonably priced, very welcomjnv and extremely enjoyable, even in overcast weather conditions.

Thank you for your kind words about Derreen and I'm glad you had a good day out. The damp weather does bring out the most amazing smells, I hope you found the eucalyptus that smells fantastic in mist. More

I visited Derreen Gardens in August 2016. I should have done a little more research on the place as i found it a waste of time. My advice would be to keep you money and find a woods to walk around. Adult price was €7.00 and a map a further €1.00. The best thing about this was the hidden fairy... More

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy your trip. You are welcome to walk round the Ladies Mile which is free but I'm afraid we have to charge to pay for the upkeep. Also some of the plants are very old and rare and you won't find them in the woods. I'm glad you enjoyed the fairy... More

We visited Derreen Gardens on our family holiday and walked around some of the different routes. There are short routes and longer routes through natural woodland with beautiful views of the coastline and mountains. Although we didn't see any on our visit, there are apparently, deer in the woods and seals can be seen around the coastline and island. The... More

Thank you for your review and I'm glad you like a chat. We do too. There really are deer in the woods, they tend to come out in the morning and evening and they love the Camellia buds which drives us mad. Come again. More
