We were told about the hornblower by our hotel reception. The small ceremony takes place every evening (without fail for 1100 years) at 9pm. Original the hornblower or Wakeman used to set a watch over the town every evening at 9pm until dawn. Any burglaries...More

The uproar of local bikers did not put the hornblower off - he blew his horn and told the small but attentive crowd of which we were a part about this unique custom. Its fascinating and unique and an essential experience for any visitor

This is a tradition that has gone on for over 1000 years. Well worth visiting to make you feel like part of Ripon's tradition.

Get to the Market Square to see the ancient ceremony take place at 9.00 p.m. Very informative and quite fun

We managed to see this traditional event whilst we were on holiday. The Hornblower gave an explanation of the history behind the Wakeman and as to how it continues today.
