Markenfield Hall – tucked privately away along a mile-long winding drive, just three miles south of Ripon, has been described as Yorkshire’s best-kept secret. Not visible from the road, a glimpse of the imposing east wall cannot be seen until visitors reach the old Mediaeval road near to the top of the drive. But for a quirk of fate – and the turnpike act of 1777 – Markenfield would be one of the most recognisable houses in Yorkshire and the nearby A61 would run along this now-Bridleway just 100m from its façade. As it is, the house is approached from the A61 Ripon to Harrogate Road along a humble farm track, past agricultural buildings and farm workers cottages. Parking at the side of the moat, visitors approach the building on foot – walking over the bridge that now serves the house in place of the former drawbridge – and the moment the Mediaeval Courtyard opens up as visitors pass beneath the Tudor Gatehouse never fails to astound. Open to the public for just 28 days each year - or to groups by appointment at virtually any other time - the Hall is still privately owned and in the hands of dedicated custodians.

If you like visiting old houses, really old houses, then make sure you see this one. It is not a 'museum' like many similar properties, but a lived in home with a lived in feel. And lived in for a very long time. What makes...More

This is a Privately owned house, reached by a 1 mile winding drive. As one of Yorkshires most romantic houses. It certainly lives up to expectations. You are greeted by a medieval house which is completely moated. A rare find indeed. Passing over the bridge...More

The guides are great, and local knowledge helpful. It is quite unlike any other I have seen in England. The guides are friendly and well informed. It is on a working farm, and the old barns are quite in keeping with the stone castle. Well...More

Possibly a cliched title for my review but one which is very appropriate, I think. Well hidden away and not broadly advertised in the locality but so worth a visit! Such a wonderful example of a medieval moated property and if you walk round the...More

Privately owned and occupied, Markenfield hall is seldom open to visitors. A moted, 15th century manor house is worth seeing when it is open. The interior has, of course, been updated numerous times over the centuries, so the structure does not take you back hundreds...More

Tucked away in the countryside outside of Ripon and only open a few weeks a year, Markenfield Hall is an amazing surviving example of a largely unaltered medieval Manor House. The guides in each room show you the way round and hand out laminate pages...More

Thank you very much for taking the time to comment on the Hall - we are so glad that you enjoyed your visit and that you enjoyed the fact that it is still very much a lived in home.

Managed to get to view during one of the very brief opening times. Had previously made a family day of it by walking over from Studley Royal, but this time drove all the way there (final mile down a very narrow lane). Very beautiful and...More

Thank you for your review. It isn't a large property, but I am glad you thought we were worth the visit.

A lovely few hours of culture taking in the history and serenity of this beautiful and historic building. Well worth visiting when the opportunity arise but I suspect a little boring for children.

Thank you - we are glad that you enjoyed you visit and you are right - we may be a little quiet for the younger generation. Let's hope they discover us when they're a bit older.

Visited with friends on one of the few days it's open. Better than remembered. Easy to miss off the A61, long single track entrance route, but worth it when you get there. A family home, yet well restored to its former state. The moat giving...More
