Saw a heron grab a fish. It marched around a corner where a bunch of kids were all shouting excitedly that it had swallowed the fish whole. Yes, birds can’t chew, and have very elastic throats. They’d never seen anything like it, and I’d never seen a heron catch such a big fish just three metres away from me.

While that was exceptional the residents you can see here every time include swans, greylag geese, coots, mallards, pigeons and gulls. The birds are used to people and you can even walk close by them.

Mill Ponds Local Nature reserve in Carrickfergus Town is such a peaceful location in the middle of the town. It is full of wildlife including bumblebees, butterflys, swans, geese, waterbirds, swallows, robins, coal tits and lots of other wild birds. This little area is a great place to visit if you have stopped in Carrickfergus Town Centre for some shopping or a coffee.

Grey herons have a habit of standing 300 yards away, and of flying off if you try to approach nearer. This autumn at the Mill Ponds in Carrick a young heron has taken up residence who isn't spooked by people at all. It was ten feet from me, for quite some time. Great photo opportunity. The birds here like people, and great numbers of pigeons and gulls flew over to surround me, presumably hoping for a feed. All I had was a camera, so I must have been a great let-down for them! Shaftesbury Park was starting to take on its autumn colours, so the next few weeks will be a great time of year to visit.

On Sunday 25th August I was walking my dogs prior to a family fun day taking place in the Park. I’ve no problem with that, it’s good to see families having fun. As I walked in through the gate at the North Road entrance to the park, my dogs and I were startled by a female driver who was driving into the park. I challenged her and told her that there were many dog owners and children about and that she should not be driving into a public park. She stated that she had permission from the council which I think was a downright lie. She was in a very small car and ignoring me she proceeded to drive towards the entrance at the Marine Highway. She had very little to get from her car for the family fun day and indeed she could have walked quite easily from the gate to where she was going. What a lazy individual and someone who took advantage of our council.

Even as you approach the gate there's a blaze of crimson Virginia creeper on someone's roof. Its September, and at the entrance leaves on the ground dance in the breeze. Over the next few weeks the trees inside will slowly turn to gold and each visit will be a revelation of colour.

This park gives you a tranquil feeling away from it all. Really well kept and a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. Beautiful trees and well kept lawns. Nice place to walk the dog too.

Access from shopping car park in St Brides Street. Is a pleasant walk to the marine highway/ Scotch Quarter. A small park away from the everyday hustle and bustle.
A quiet place to relax under a shaded tree.It seems to be well kept.

Lots of open green space and shady trees. There is a trim trail too but on a hot day we came here for shade under the trees.
