About
Due to the military impenetrability of this castle the town of Carrickfergus long thrived even when surrounding villages suffered defeats.

    Nice and interesting
Back in 1170 when this castle has its origins, it's a Norman castle, famous to have been taken by William III in 1690 who was king of Ireland . Unfortunately we couldn't visit it inside as we were on a bus tour. Interesting stop, lovely village and location of this castle.

    Interesting
You can visit an exhibition area which shows a video of the Castle history & also an interactive area where you are able to try some head gear on etc. The keep was good with nice exhibits which were informative. Admission £6. Shop & toilets on site. Free parking in the adjacent Castle carpark.

    Great experience!
Had an amazing time with our tour guide Fra. Really went into detail about everything inside and outside the castle. Lived in Carrickfergus for years and been many times but learned more now than I did years ago. Beautiful piece of history and architecture and tour guides with rich knowledge.

So pleased I dropped in for a tour
I visited N. Ireland to do the Causeway Coastal Route. With so much along the route to squash into a short trip I was unsure whether to stop here but I'm so pleased I did. I took a guided tour (around 1 hour long) and it was excellent. Miles was our guide and he gave us so much quality information about the castle & Carrickfergus; I really enjoyed it. There's also information boards to read in the castle and a video to watch too, but I'd recommend a tour to get the most out of your visit here.

This Castle is Worth a Visit!
This Norman Castle in County Antrim was a nice afternoon visit with our group of eight adults. Very well presented and the tour itself is self guided with a detailed map to guide you along. The castle was all dressed up for Halloween with plenty of skeletons, which added to the experience. Excellent stop for the family and reasonably price entrance fee.

    Enjoyable visit.
We took a day trip from Dublin. We were told to skip the Belfast Castle and come here. It's 20 minutes from the train station. Well worth it. Great water views and alot of history. The castle is over 1,000 years old. We didnt have a guide, but went through our own pace.

    William III heard
The spot where William III landed in Ireland and a beautiful spot it is too. A short bus ride from Belfast and a really nice experience when you arrive. The castle is stunning with picture opportunities at every turn. Take a tour and learn all the history of the building. Fascinating stuff. The town of Carrickfergus offers much more than just the castle and it's a real stand alone gem itself.

    One of the better castles
We visited while driving to where we were staying in Northern Ireland. We bought lunch from the nearby tesco and ate it as a picnic within the castle. It has a building with a video playing about the story of the castle and some activities for schoolchildren. The castle has some impressive towers with good views. If you have a few hours to spare then it is worth a visit.

    Interesting tour
I recommend joining a tour with the guide that is included in price. I learnt a lot from it. The story of the castle and its owners sounded like from Game of Thrones. Very interesting place. Inspired me to dig deeper into the history of the region.

    Great!
The views from top were amazing. The information on the history of the castle and how it came about was very good. The new information centre was good for kids as well as the sensory room. The gift shop was reasonably priced.

If I could give it zero I would. Very disappointing. Brought my 17 year old daughter & her 16 yo friend down today from Lisburn for them to be told that under 18s must be accompanied by an adult 🤷🏻‍♀️. Nowhere on Google or Discover NI's website does it say this (that I can see, anyway) The two girls were extremely disappointed as they were going to gather information for an upcoming history project. They now have to think of something else to do. Thanks Carrick Castle for a very wasted afternoon.

It is quite a well kept castle, I really wish they would open it when they are not doing work and have areas closed off, the tours are very interesting, the staff/volunteers are Ok, myself and wife are members of English Heritage, we asked if our cards were any good, she smugly replied certainly not, we are nothing to do with them. So nice castle ok staff/ volunteers.

We called here on our coach trip and it was pouring with rain so I don't think we saw the castle at it's best. I would love to go inside if we visited Northern Ireland again
