Unfortunately, our visit to the cheese factory turned out to be a complete disappointment. We’ve read on-line that the place is open till 5 pm. We have arrived at 2 pm and found out that there was nothing to see there at that time: the production of cheese had been finished for the day, and so was the production of baked goods. Basically, we drove all the way there for no reason at all. It was a complete waste of time. We believe that the web-site should be more clear and specific as to what time the visitors should arrive if they want to see something. There is a nice restaurant on site there where we had lunch, and a store where you can buy cheese. However, the store was nothing special, absolutely no different from any cheese section in any supermarket.

The self guided tour, is either in german or english. It tells the story of the emmentaler cheese from the first step somewhere deep in the 19th century until today. The story is told by 3 characters , the cow, the cook and the mouse. It is told mainly analogicaly with some digital touches at the end. But very lowtech. It might not even appeal to children of our era. The shop is good with outlet procing.
The restaurant is simple with surprisingly good food and service

The Emmentaler Schaukaserei is a combination of useful information about the history of cheese making and watching the production and maturation process with a Disney-like show that will make kids happy and maybe open them the taste for cheese. The factory shop and the restaurant are above expectations and the prices reasonable. I found the old cheese maker house the most interesting part of the visit.

It is an amazing small town, great countryside traditional landscape, very fresh air. The cheese visit is quite good to understand how they make cheese in Emmental. The restaurant is very good, very typical Swiss food.

The Emmental Show Dairy is in the adorable town of Affoltern. As of spring 2016, you could easily catch a bus from Hasle or Sumiswald. My wife and I made this as an easy day trip from Luzern, but it wouldn't be difficult to travel from Bern or Interlaken. We spent about an hour inside watching the cheesemaking process and choosing a light lunch. Many locals were around on a Sunday, and we had a pleasant lunch outdoors with local cheese, sausage, and red wine. If around between April and October, check the "Emmental Bahn" heritage train schedule. We were able to catch a ride on an early twentieth-century steam locomotive, too :-)

We went for a birthday treat with some English friends and booked the whole package which includes making your own curd cheese, an excellent audio tour of the cheese factory through the ages, lunch in the lovely restaurant overlooking the beautiful Emmenthal, a private tasting and also a demonstration of how cheese is made today. Being a fan of Emmenthal cheese this was a wonderful treat. Staff are very informative and the audio tour is well put together, available in many languages and suitable for adults and children alike. We took our cheese and some other produce from the shop home to enjoy.

I contacted the dairy in February (traveled in Sept) and the kind attendant, Judith, let me know how to secure English language iPods for our trip. As promised, they were waiting with our name on them (seriously!) when we arrived. A great place to see how cheese is (and was) made, packed and shipped. The self guided tour allows photos, runs about 45 minutes, and is a nice overview...not overkill. Just perfect. Nice store with goodies made onsite. Nice views and a children's play area as well. When driving there -- just keep following signs to Affoltern (no signs for the Show Dairy / Schaukaseri) till you are very close.

The Swiss speciality Emmental cheese is produced all over the Emmental region but is best seen, understood and tasted at the Show Dairy which is located in Affoltern in the canton of Bern.
The Dairy consists of a (small) modern factory (with restaurant, shop, terrace), a gift shop (where iPods for self-guided tours can be rented and various Swiss non-edible gifts can be purchased); a bakery; the old house (where the cheese was originally produced and where, if you’re lucky the cheese will be being made by a traditionally attired employee); a small vegetable/herb garden which visitors can potter around and a large parking. The village isn’t the most picturesque but there are a few old, traditional farms and the view over the rolling Emmental is spectacular on a clear day.
Emmental cheese is produced from the milk from local cows that are fed only natural grass and hay (no silage) and different maturation processes produce different types of Emmental, many of which are on sale at the factory shop and restaurant, along with many other local and Swiss specialities. Free degustations are sometimes offered at weekends and there’s a cheese-themed playground to keep the kids happy.
Other than the views and nibbles, there isn’t much to do so, if you have made the effort to get to Affoltern which, let’s face it, is off the beaten tourist track then at least make sure you get the most out of your visit by either joining a guided tour (various languages are proposed but best to phone up ahead) or by renting an iPod for CHF 10. The latter offers visitors an insight into how exactly Emmental is made and it is a fascinating tour that leads you all over the site following the cow and headset icon at your own pace. It is well worth it and by the end you will know a multitude of trivial facts including exactly how much milk is needed to produce a kilo of cheese and how the holes are made (and what size they should be). You will also realise that all Emmental isn't created equal and doesn't always look and taste like a lump of plastic.
The Show Dairy is probably not worth a special detour, but in combination with a hike (up the Napf for example) it’s a nice way to spend a day or half day.

Even on a wet rainy day in April we had fun watching the cheese being made. Also the historical cheese houses were interesting. As a bonus we had a fantastic traditional Swiss meal in the restaurant.

We took the train to Sumiswald, then over to Affoltern to see the Show Dairy, Schaukaeserei. The trip was almost as good as the destination. The Emmental is a beautiful valley filled with green meadows, rolling hills, and lots of cows.
The Show Dairy is comprehensive. We visited while they had a sculpture display outside that was excellent. In addition, we saw the cheese production (both modern and ancient), and visited their restaurant.
We noticed many people arrived by bicycle. That would be a fun way to see the area.

Hi Blessedstarsg
Read that you have visited both of the cheese factory in Switzerland :)
I have time only for 1 cheese factory, which one will you recommend? I also do not have time to stay for the cheese making workshop like you did, I believe it must be interesting ;)

If you only have time for one factory I would choose Emmenthal. It is closer to the lovely towns of Lucerne and Bern and has other options as well as the cheese making. It also has a good restaurant with a nice view and a well-stocked shop. You can just take the tour, go for the demonstration on how to make curd cheese or the factory demonstration.

If you are visiting at the right time of the day but only purchase the audio guide are you able to see: The traditional production of Emmentaler AOP:
14.00 Uhr start of the production
14.40 Uhr 2nd step of production with the cheese harp
16.00 Uhr the cheese comes out of the pot
or are these steps only able to be seen if you are on a tour?
What is included in the: "Each Saturday and Sunday at 1pm and 3.15pm starts the public tour through the showdairy". How much does it cost? Do you have to have a minimum number of people to go on the public tours? We are only a group of four people.
