I'm a local to the area and take visitors to La Mine Bleu one or twice a year - it never fails to be interesting. The guides provide a thorough explanation of the history of the mine and the living conditions and lives of the miners.

My reason for dropping one star is that you used to be able to descend via a funicular and come back up via lifts - you now descend and ascend both via the lifts, presumably due to the constant mechanical maintenance of the funicular. The other reason is that there used to be a film played to visitors mid-way through the tour underground which really brought to life the story of the miners - this is no longer played which is a shame.

The above aside, this is still a brilliant visit and I'd urge you to go. Just wear warm clothing as it can be mighty cold underground. Also take note that your ticket will be related to a specific timeslot and you can only go underground within that particular timeslot.

Really interesting and informative. Fascinating insight into a past life working in a slate mine. Not for the claustrophobic! Our French guide was excellent explaining everything e could in English although he said his English was limited he did an amazing job.

Make sure you have a jacket with you. Tours are in French but they will provide English booklet. Tour guide will go above and beyond to make sure you get the point. We happened to be I. The area so we stopped by. They might have English tours in busy season.

After paying at reception, you then are given safety hats and go in a lift approximately 130metres underground with other visitors and a tour guide. You then take a train ride around the mine, getting out of the train a few times to look around. It's quite interesting down there and bigger than I expected. The tour lasted aprox 1 hour and was in french, as my family only speak basic french we didn't understand everything. It was still interesting and my children of 2,5,8 enjoyed it. Also I believe the tour starts every 90 minutes.

Once you get off the main road to Noyant le Gavoyére it is well signed but they need to put a large sign (in both direction) on the main auto-route between Angers & Rennes.
There is plenty to see in the surrounding patrk, including a demonstration of splitting slate to make tiles. There is a game to play in the form of getting answers to crack a code, obtainable in various languages. The tour itself and the expositions are only in french (so far) so you either need to speak it or get a friend to translate for you. That is why I downgraded it by one star.
You go down by a funicular railway – and back up again but the last trip down comes up by lift. It was a hard life. At the bottom is a little train – mind your head but safety helmets are provided (the tunnel roof can be low at times, especially of you are tall)! This takes you to what used to be the spoil tip and from there you climb up to the various galleries and chambers where they dynamited the slate. Some 150 steps are involved so it is not suitable for disabled people or wheelchairs. One section of tunnel is in darkness so taking a torch is helpful although the “leader” carries a light. There is a film show with scenes of the mine in action, etc. and there are various mini-tableaux of miners in action. At one stage there is a surprise so be of stout heart!
Plenty of parking, good toilets and areas to eat or buy food. You can even park in the large parking/camping area nearby and walk the 100m or so to the mine entrance itself.
