About
For the first time, all of Lascaux is revealed. A complete new replica retraces the discovery of the famous decorated cave. But that’s not the end of the adventure: the entire site inquires into the position that Lascaux occupies in cave art and its relation to contemporary creation.

Be care ful about which tour you book
We decided to go here last minute and buy tickets on site. We were lucky to get tickets for the last guided tour of the day, or so we thought. We were not able to do the self tour, it's only between 12 and 2. After purchasing the non refundable tickets, we were told that the tour is only in French. 3 out of 4 of us are not fluent. The tour guise spoke very fast. We were given tablets within audio tour that didn't match up to what the guide was pointing to with the light. It was frustrating to spend that much money on this. Even our fluentfrenxg speaker said that there wasn't much information. It was "here are the drawing, but we don't know what they mean". I hope this place looks into texh that translates on real time. The tablets are really old tech.
Thank you for sharing your experience. All day long and at set times, we offer guided visits some of which are in english. As indicated on the website, audioguided tours are between 12.30 and 1.40pm.

Too many visitors on our guided tour.
My friend and I visited these caves today. Parking was easy and a short walk from the visitors centre. Pre-booked tour started a little late. Our group of 38 English speakers was much too large. The tour leader stood at the front. Her illuminated pointer wasn’t working so those of us at the back couldn’t see where she was pointing with her finger. The groups behind and in front were too close. We also couldn’t hear the questions being asked by those visitors who were close enough to the guide to ask them. Good overall displays and a good system to allow visitors to hear what the guide was saying.
Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion. We're sorry you felt that way about Lascaux. We do our utmost to welcome our visitors from all over the world, who like you, take advantage of the summer to discover Lascaux.

    A fantastically detailed replica.
It is of course a very sad history for the genuine caves, but Lascoux IV is an amazingly precise replica made with incredible attention to detail. The guided cave visit with an excellent commentary supplied by the English speaking guide was faultless. In the museum section that followed we were supplied with electronic tablet like devices to give detail on the exhibits. However, there was no clue how to operate the devices! After much frustration and trial and error I was able to find most of the relevant information. With a little guidance on this I would have rated this 5*.
Thank you very much for your very comprehensive review! We are delighted that you enjoyed the discovery of Lascaux IV. We will take your comment into account.

    Mind blowing
We had a fabulous American guide Josh, who made the tour absolutely fabulous , with the way he shared the story of the boys discovering the caves ,to his knowledge of the people who lived there and the paintings ! Not to be missed. Unfortunately only 2 English tours a day and from previous reviews, Josh not doing all the tours! Can be booked on line. We just changed upon the site at the right time of day . 22£ each adult. NOT SUITABLE for young children ! Spoils it for everyone else if on child screams the whole way !
thank you very much for your comprehensive review ! We are pleased you enjoyed the visit with Josh !

    Amazing and genuine exhibition
We visited as an English speaking group yesterday, youngest 13 and oldest 63. We all thoroughly loved this exhibit and would highly recommend. You are given headsets which are in English and talk you through all the paintings and drawing, in great depth and detail. The headsets can get a little confusing and there are so many features on them. My advice is ask! There are Lascaux staff around and they are very friendly and approachable and will guide you and show you what to do. Parking is excellent, Montignac-Lascaux, as a town is lovely! Be sure to walk into town and have a look around. It’s a definite must visit!

    Summer visit to Lascaux
We joined the English tour with the fabulous guide Joshua. We had been to Lascaux II over 10 years ago and this new experience didn't disappoint. Our guide was informative and took lots of questioned and even went to lunch late to take some extra time in the workshop area to further enhance our tour experience. The car parks were extremely busy and you could have a walk from the overflow parking. There's good facilities in the main building including lockers. We advise you make use of these. (Don't use the toilets in the car park use the ones in the main building). Make note of your tour time and follow the instructions in terms of tour time arrival. There are staff available for queries. The audio guide in the workshop is helpful but we found ours a bit glitchy - not coming on in the areas automatically as expected (this could have been user error!) the younger children really enjoyed their tailored guide.
Thank you very much for this comprehensive review ! We are delighted that you enjoyed the visit with Joshua !

Beautiful, inspiring, informative - educational for school children up to adults!
This visit was an eye opener for me and I will never think of pre-historic art in the same way again. The reproduction cave and exhibition afterwards are fascinating, made all the more interesting by our informative guide Joshua. I had never appreciated the skill that these early people had and to think that drawings of such beauty were crafted 20,000 years ago is just mind boggling. For me personally, this was the best thing I have did in the Dordogne over a fortnight's visit. The only thing that ruined it slightly for me were visitors bringing their toddlers and very young children on the tour with them. The guided tour lasts around 45 minutes and for a young child it is boring. You are walking through a cave with a guide speaking at you, whilst looking at pictures - this holds no interest for really young children, so they start moaning and crying.... spoilt the atmosphere and made hearing the guide difficult at times.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience. Toddlers are their parents' responsability. Thank you for Joshua !

    Great choice
We realised on the way there this was a replica so we were a little concerned as to what it would be like. However it was amazing. As authentic as it could be. Our guide (in English) Briana was excellent too. The interactive second section was fun. We would definitely recommend to people visiting the area as an enjoyable and educational activity. We had a group of adults & grown up teens who are notoriously hard to impress. However they really enjoyed it too!

    Worth getting up early for!
Do not be put off by the idea that this is a replica. It is wonderfully done and I don’t feel anything was lost in the recreation. English language tours are not at great times but we roused ourselves for the early start and we were rewarded by a peaceful, empty cave viewing experience and a GREAT guide Josh. Josh kept 8 kids aged 4-10 quietly captivated as we went through the cave and gave lots of time and space to contemplate the art and the experience of the artists. It really was a wonderful experience. The workshop after the cave is also very well done - photos are from there as there is no photography in the cave

    Fascinating and well done
Great experience overall, likely learned a whole lot more with the interactive with tablet and headphones walk around than if we’d gone to one of the “real” caves. First class displays. Just wondering why we had to select some of the few “English” tours, when in fact our “English” tour was simply a tablet that could also speak about 8 other languages! No tour guide at all. Which for me is preferable to the sluggish groups lead by an overly loud stick wielding guide. But why were we given only an “English” slot time period online? Tell me it is not simply to limit non-French visitors access?
Thank you for your comprehensive review. We name the time slots with specific nationalities just to show we have seevral langauges available and to ease the flow of visitors in the cave. Besides, we offer guided visits in english during which the guide is not yealing since we have a system allowing each participant to ear the guide as if he was talking to him personally.

Quite extraordinary replica - difficult to believe it’s not the real thing. We pre-booked online the day before (last 2 spaces for an English tour at 9.30.) Entrance very easy, with guidance on leaving bags and how to operate the headphones. Our English speaking guide Emma was excellent.
The guided tour was about an hour and then a further hour spent in the interactive exhibition (took a bit of practice to master the ‘tablet’), and a couple of cinema screenings. Lovely shop and nice cafe has made this a very worthwhile visit.
We also walked up to Lascaux 1 and 11.

The replica cave was built to protect the original from pollution from people and light. So why not turn up the lights in the replica so the paintings can be seen? Our guide used a small pointer light, but the lights in the cave are dim and the creatures and colors are hard to see. I couldn't appreciate the meticulous work required to recreate the cave. I know, caves are dark and cold, but this tour over-emphasized that aspect of the experience.

Thank you for sharing that review. The lighting is adjusted to recreate the atmosphere of the cave and to bring out the relief of the walls to understand why Cro Magnon choosed that specific place to paint.

Definitely worth visiting, we only had time for Lascaux IV and it was very good. The English language tour was interesting and I was very pleased that we took the opportunity whilst we were in the area.
The restaurant was very nice too and the gift shop offers some interesting things to buy for family and friends

Very well done reproduction of the Lascaux cave. It really felt like we were in the cave. The paintings were incredibly beautiful.
The interpretation centre after we had been through the cave was excellent. It was easy to book on line. Parking was easy and the restaurant/cafe had a good variety of food and drinks. Highly recommended experience.

First of all, the building is off putting--starkly modern with cold cement, steel, and glass. And the inside is no better--and this for a museum of prehistoric art. But what Lascaux II has and Lascaux IV doesn't , is the feeling that you're really in a cave. You never get away from the feeling you're in a museum of recreated art. You go down halls to get to the second part of the exhibit. Lascaux II knocks my socks off. Lascaux IV doesn't

There are so many reviews of this place there is little to add but these tips:
-Go! Worth a detour. A must see in this area.
-Book tickets in advance. We found that October tickets went on sale in early September.
-The audio guide is very good, and thus you don’t need a guided tour. But it takes a bit to learn how to use it. Pay attention to the introductory explanations.
-After touring the caves the tour is far from over. Keep your audio guide and learn how the artists did their work. And you can even use the audio guide to scan particular pictures and get an explanation that way.
-There is lots of parking but go early the day. With that much parking they must need it all
-Try to park in P1, closest to the center. Hint: you will see signs for WC in the parking area but those in the center itself are cleaner, better stocked and warmer!
-Tours start on time, so don’t miss yours. Arrive early and get a coffee in the cafe so you are sure to be on time.
-I end where I began: Go! Worth a detour. A must see in this area.

A truly exhilarating destination!

We had been to Lascaux 2 a few yeas ago but now with the addition of a visitor centre, restaurant and multi-media walkthrough experience, it is a magnificent attraction.

The restaurant is good too.

A huge disappointment! The so called accurate reconstruction of the original caves was completely lacking in atmosphere and was like a children's play set. The film sound track in French totally drowned out the audio guide. Worst value 22 Euros ever spent. You'd be better off buying a decent book about the caves and reading it at home than wasting your time visiting this apology for an attraction.
