For some reason Melfi doesn’t appear in many of the English language guide books and this is a serious oversight! Melfi was an incredibly important town in the medieval to early modern period- the first crusade was announced from the castle. The town is dotted with signs taking you through it’s history in bite sized chunks and the castle is the culmination of it all.
The castle acts as the local archeological museum and contains a great deal of Roman and Greek artefacts - the highlight was a pair of the most incredible marble sarcophagi. One of these was on loan from Naples (associated with Matera 2019 Capital of Culture) but fortunately for future visitors it was the lesser of the two!

We had a wonderful visit to the castle. We hired a local guide, Michelangelo Levita (can be hired through hotel or tourist bureau) who gave us a great overview of the museum. The castle is worth a visit.

A real must-see! The castle (11th-12th c) was home of kings and popes and seat of parliaments and councils. The archeological collection inside is absolutely outstanding and unmissable. The monumental Rampolla sarcophagus (2nd c B.C.) alone is just worth the trip. Even if you do not fancy museums... well, what you'll see will blow you away. One hour very well spent.

This is a small, unremarkable castle with lovely views, cheap admission fees (3 Euro?, kids free) and a surprising display of artifacts from the castle's excavation. Plan one hour to see the whole thing. Worth doing.

Inside the castle is a great exhibit of archeological finds from the region. It was a fascinating display worth many times the 250 price of admission. It is not to be missed.

Located in A picturesque castle. The highlight here is the archaeological Museum which has stuff from 2500 to 2800 years old only recently discovered. Stunningly beautiful things.

Excellent and very pleased we took the time to do this - had no real info on the castle before we got there but was very impressed - exhibition is over 2 floors and well presented - there is a lot to take in and read about and appreciate that there was a lot of info in English which I could read about. You are not rushed around the exhibits and so can do at own time - wonderful visit

The outside of the castle is impressive and majestic! And the archaeological museum hosted inside is absolutely unique in the Italian cultural landscape as it entirely focuses on pre Roman peoples of this area (Samnites, Peucetians and Daunians). Some pieces are just stunning and very well preserved and a worth a visit. The best of all is probably the marble sarcophagus dating back to II-III century AD.
Unfortunately, despite the friendly staff at the reception, no hard copy or audio guide are available and this certainly 'impairs' the visit. And if you are interested in the medieval history of the castle, there is not much to see (the Throne Room was closed) and very little is explained.
I am sure the local tourism board may use this treasure in a much more fruitful way. For instance, a € 2.50 entry ticket for this masterpiece is just a shame! A higher entrance fee might certainly benefit the whole organization.
