Nagore Dargah is a dargah that was constructed over the tomb of the Sufi saint Shahul Hameed. According to legends, Shahul Hamid performed several miracles at Nagore and cured the physical ailment of King Achuthappa Nayak, a 16th-century Hindu king of Thanjavur. He is known as Nagore Andavar. During our journey to Karaikal, we made a stop at Nagore Durgah after visiting Velankanni on the way. We enter the outside of the dargah, where there is a separation between the men and the women. In the tomb, only men are allowed in, and women have to sit outside. The person who sits inside and does the prayers for us is asking for donations for the festival of Ramzan. It is impossible for you to get out of that situation. After I have paid Rs.500 to them, they will admit us inside. Parking is a major issue; I had to park a few streets away and walk to the temple. You can shop by the side of the road, but it is expensive

Nagore dhargah sheriff is a largest dhargah (a muslim saint name called Sahul Hameed buried here). Muslims who understand the concept of Islam not visiting here (because as per islamic concept no other god exists except allah) However, few muslims, hindus, christians visiting here. Some of them believing that Saint healing their worries, diseases and disability. Dhargha Uroos, (a chariot festival) is famous during the month of August. (approximately) Transportation to Nagore is frequent from major cities. Railway station and bus stop is very near to dhargah. Reservation is very important since the rout is crowded. Nagore dhargah sheriff is located between nagappattinam and karaikal. Velankanni church is 40 mins journey from nagore. While visiting do not believe the people name called "sabu" with cap and lungi, will mislead you due to your innocence in the new place. They will tell you that they will pray for you and ask more money depend upon your face. Careful about that.
You cannot find any good restaurant and hotels in Nagore, for this you have to go nearby Nagappattinam or Karaikal. Sweets are famous in Nagore Dhargah market. Handicrafts also available. Islamic prayer mate, Lungi etc also available to shop if you want. Other than this better avoid to shop here.
Nagore beach is very small but nice one. Its is very near to Dargah, You can have a nice trip there.
Since the roads are very narrow, parking vehicles are difficult and unsafe. Since this is the tourist place, careful about your belongings.
Anyone comes and try to control you in and out side dargah, raise your voice. They will immediately left from you.
Please confirm the price for anything before shop or get service.

Visited Nagore Dargah on our way back to Chennai from Velankanni on August last week. As said by Shamsheer, Parking would be a challenge, atlast managed to park my Car opposite to Dargah itself. Streets are very narrow that only one car and a bike go at a time.
Left our things and Foot wears inside the car. The place was so divine and I realized why this place is so famous among south Indians. Before you enter into Dargah, shopkeepers will surround you for buying things for your prayers. If you do not know how things are done inside, do not buy anything(This is specially for non-Muslims). Before entering into sacred place, you need to wash your hands and legs using the Tap water which is at left side from the entrance.
Dargah people will be standing at the entrance to guide non-muslim people until you step out. They will also educate you on how this dargah was formed and who is the main devotee. We being an Hindu, were excited to enter into Dargah.
Ladies will not be allowed inside the main sacred place, only mens are allowed, som y wife stood outside the main sacred place. At the main sacred place, mullah's will ask the reason for your visit to Dargah(like prayers for health, child.. etc). He will pray for your prayers to come true. They will immediately ask for donation to dargah and worst part is they demanded to offer atleast 1000rs. They are writing it in a Note for their reference.
Meanwhile, my wife was standing outside and the guy who was outside, got money from my wife too. So we both gave money for the same reason which I thought was not a good move by Dargah guys. But we didn't take it in that way actually.
Do not buy any halwas, or any other eatables outside dargah which are not good and doesn't have any quality. Oils will be a good choice, and Perfumes for some people.
So please be mindful on these things. Place was absolutely divine and great. Sit for sometime and relax, you will feel the difference.

We Hindu, who believe faith in Christian and Muslim gods. So, we went to Velankanni and came to Nagore Durgah. When we enter the outside durgah, one person came and took us inside. They split up the men and women. Men are allowed into the tomb and women have to sit outside. The person who sitting inside and do prayer, asked to give Rs.5000 (for nombu kanji since it ramzan festival time) or Rs.3000 or Rs.1500. You cannot escape from that situation. They will allow you to leave only when you the pay the money. This is my personal worst experience.

Durgah is very powerful and we are visting here last 20years. This is a place where mixing of muslim and hindu cluture. The Hazarath Sahul Hamid famously known as Quadir Wali very popular in protecting his believers and protects islam. He is very famous for miracles.
Here some of people in durgah made business, plays with pilgrims sentiments. Holywater costs 10 to 20 Rupees. Here every body will demand money in durgah. At every point of visting in durgah this type of money agents seen. There is no control by the Durgah Committee on this people. Because of this type of people visitors are gradually decreases.
I give 5star rating for Quadir wali baba, and also give 0 stars for those money people who are playing with pilgrims sentiments.

I visited Nagore Dargah on 28th May 2015 after visiting Velankanni and Thirunallar temple. It is around 15kms from Karaikal and 6kms from Nagapattinam. It is well connected by buses from both these locations for people who travel by bus. I was travelling alone that day and once i got down in the Nagore Dargah bus stop, it felt little nervous seeing Muslims all around. Few stares and few friendly looks made me nervous and relaxed simultaneously. People could recognise that i was a outsider cos of my backpack. I would advice you to be casual and never look at anyone, so that you can feel comfy. Once I went near the Mosque, one person authoritatively asked me to leave footwear outside in a shop. Me too not knowing the things left my slippers in a shop opp to dargah. Then he gave me a basket with pooja items and demanded Rs.35. I gave it and once i was about to enter the dargah, i saw the Chappal stand in entrance, where they charge only Rs.3 per chappal. So i lost Rs.32 there. Being a Hindu, I was too eager to enter the mosque. Once I entered, there was a welcoming man, who made me sit, took stuff from my pooja cover and did something saying praying for me. Not even 2mins, he demanded money. I gave Rs.100. He told give atleast Rs.300. I said I will come back later and didn't give more. Then for going inside the holy tomb area,he asked me Rs.5, while others were charged only Rs.3 (don't know really wats so special with me). There one more person did same thing if praying for me and showed me a note asking for donation. Previously it has written 1500, 15000, 10000 etc. Then I put Rs.200 and he said its too less and again said I can only give this much now. Then I immediately left even without enjoying the beauty and peace of the mosque because few more people were calling me in similar way. I felt relaxed once I came out and still people were chasing me which was no more problem for me. Eateries outside are very tempting but I'm not sure about the quality. To be frank, it is such a holy, sacrad and beautiful place spoiled by these unethical and cheating people, who target mostly travellers. Keeping my experience on mind, few advices I would give are:
1. It is a declared holy place for all religions. So Be confident and walk as if you know this place very well. Don't care about any stares and shouting people. Just say, u have been here before and you know it well.
2. It is a holy tourist spot declared by Govt. of Tamilnadu. So don't be scared for these touts.
3. Leave your slippers only in chappal stand maintained by Govt.
4. Do not buy any pooja items, no matter how much they pressurise you, especially if you belong to other religion.
5. Don't go and sit to anyone except inside the holy tomb area and donate any amount which you feel like giving and not under any pressure by them. They will be demanding in thousands. But you be steady, even if you can give only Rs.100. Tell them clearly and politely that you can give only that much.
6. Be quiet inside the mosque and don't ever forget the beauty of the mosque, as the architecture is one of it's kind and at it's best. Try to visit the beach nearby, which I was not guided.
7. Finally enjoy without any concerns as it is a safe place, just with some intimidating unethical touts.

Visited with friends. Have vaguely heard about the place and failed to research it properly before visiting (a major mistake). Enroute to Vailankanni stopped here. Was abit weary about visiting the mosque as i am a hindu and don't know the proper formalities. Was ushered in by some very friendly people.
That's where that ended, after they could feel we were clueless about anything they happily took us around offering prayers and rituals and finally taking out notebooks asking us for huge donations !! The book shows donations of 10k and 15k !! Asked us minimum 3000rs !!
We went as a group of 3 friends and 1 couple. They split each one of us up and smooth talked us for donations and charity. They made each one of us cough up 500 rs (they demanded us to pay 3000rs but we said 500 is all we have). Each one of us paid thinking we r paying on behalf of the whole group. They very cunningly split us up so we couldnt discuss and pay jointly. So on the whole we lost 1700rs. So kindly beware. There are hundreds of beggars roaming the mosque. If they did indeed feed the poor daily they wouldn't be so visible. If you really want to donate money put something in the hundial. That too not more than 200 or 300. Very very commercial mosque. They should be disgraced to rob under the name of religion.
Now when i discuss many people tell me this place is known to rip off people. Some have lost 5000, one person said he lost 500 10 years ago to the same donation seekers.
Apart from these hooligans, the mosque is a beautiful unique structure. Please do visit but beware. Don't recive any of the offerings. Just visit, if your muslim offer your prayers and then just leave. Please offer your donations to genuine people rather than these crooks

Nagore is a town situated in the Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu in India. Nagore is sometimes spelled as Nagoor. In reality it is a small town located along the shore of the Bay of Bengal. The main attraction of this town is the renowned Nagore Dargah, which is a sacred place of all faiths. This Dargah of Hazrat Syed Shahul Hameed Qadiri (Qadiri) Qadir Wali is the most popular Muslim pilgrim centre in South India. The tomb is topped by a golden dome and flanked by five minarets. This is more than 500 years old Muslim shrine, attracting millions of pilgrims from all places irrespective of caste, creed, colour, faith or religion.
The speciality of Nagore Dargah is that it is a Common Religious Centre for all Muslims, Hindus, Christians and others. It is known as
” All Triple Gems” of every religious devotees. Thus anybody can enter this Dargah without any obstacles, irrespective of religion, race or caste etc. This is a sacred point where all the three Biggest Oceans [Muslims, Hindus, Christians] on the world have combined together. You might have visited Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu where all the three seas mingle creating a feast of attractive colours to your eyes. Kanyakumari is near to Nagore. Thus, if at all there is any place where all the three religious followers congregate at one place on the globe is existing, it is ‘Nagore Dargah’.
The Saint Hazrat Syed Shahul Hameed Qadiri (Qadiri) Qadir Wali Ghanjasavoy, Ghanjabaksh Nagore, of Nagore Dargah (Nagore Dargah) Sheriff was born in Manickkapur near Ayodhya in 1491. He went to Gwalior where his teacher Hazarath Syed Mohamed Ghouse Sahib initiated divine knowledge to him. He then toured extensively in Afghanistan, Baluchistan and other places of the world performing innumerable miracles. On his way to Makkah (Saudi Arabia), he stayed in a Mosque at Lahore. He then came to Thanjavur, when Naick dynasty was ruling Thanjavur. He was requested to cure the king who was suffering from prolonged illness. The Saint miraculously cured the king.
The King gave him certain land near the Sea-shore as desired by the saint. The land so dedicated was 30 acres called 'Heavenly' on which the present buildings and premises of "Nagore Dargah shrine" shine like stars on earth at the sea shore. He died at the age of 68th year on a Friday (Hijiri 978) and was entombed at Nagore as per his desire. Later a Maharatta King of Thanjavur Tulasi Maharaja endowed 115 villages with 4000 acres of agricultural lands for the maintenance of the Dargah.
His Miracles continued even after his demise. He came to Nagore on Thursday as such every Thursday thousands of people attend the worship at the Dargah and make their offerings. He is locally recognised as ‘Nagore Andavar ‘means “the Lord of Nagore” and also popularly called ‘Meeran Sahib’ or ‘Qadir Wali’. The 14-day Kandhuri Urs (also spelled Kandoori or Kandhoori) festival, dedicated to the saint, is held annually, which occurs during May as per Islamic lunar calendar. Among other festivals are also celebrated with pomp and show. The festivals attended by thousands of pilgrims from Malaysia, Singapore, Arabia, Sri Lanka, Burma, Pakistan and majority of the pilgrims come from the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, U.P, West Bengal and other places. This will give you an idea about the peaceful coexistence of Muslims with Hindus and other religious people. The Dargah is managed by eight hereditary trustees who are the lineal descendants of the Saint.
This Dargah is at 78 km from Thanjavur and 4 km to Nagapattinam. The nearest Airport is Trichy at 139 km, but Chennai is at 300 km. There are daily Train services from Chennai and Trichy to Nagore Railway Station. There are buses at every 10 min from all major cities. There is no problem for accommodation and food.
My guide and philosopher was a Sufi Saint Tawakkal Baba. He attended the court of Maharaja of Mysore before independence. Thereafter moved and settled in Thimmasandra village in Kanakapura Taluk, Ramanagara district in Karnataka. The word ‘Thimmasandra’ means the abode of Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala Tirupathi. But the speciality of Thimmasandra is it is completely occupied by Muslim families only. Likewise the peculiarity of my native village Doddamuduvadi is that it is fully occupied by Hindu families. Both villages are situates on the western and eastern banks, respectively, of river Arkavathi. For centuries this is the position and yet both Hindus and Muslims are living like brothers and sisters in a family. My Guru had occupied certain agricultural land around a small hillock. He made a hermit on the hill top and built a small Masjid for offering five times Namaz. He only guided me to visit the three important Dargahs at least once in my life time. Few years ago he passed away. His Dargah at Thimmasandra is under the management of one of his disciples. I was not able to fulfil his desire during his life time. Fortunately I could do it recently That is how I visited the Dargahs at Ajmer, Gulbarga and now at Nagore. I am specially graced not only by my Guru but also by these three world famous and all merciful saints, who according to me are next to God, Allah.
