Koh Chang area is amaizing and exploring by boat it's the best experience. You can find small islands with beautiful beaches that you can't reach otherwise. This was our second time here and our catamaran was very confortable, very well maintained and equiped with all you need. Charter team ensured the provisioning and we highly appreciated this service.

During this horrible Covid time my wife, SUVEERA, and I have chosen to spend our Songkran Thai New Year - 2564 away from human beings and super distancing AWARE !!!!

For our cruising this time we decided to go and visit the marvelous Koh Chang Island bordering Cambodia the most east side of Thailand an archipelago of incomparable Beauty and Thainess very far away from the tourists.

Briefly 'Ja', my wife's nickname, a semi professional Spinnaker packer “Sewer rat“ a Legend of female spinnaker packing in East Asia and I, a pit man, both of us climbing up the racing ladder for the last 20 Years starting with our Trimaran Corsair F 24 culminating with Kodo a TP 52 under Ben Copley racing Team.

Back to Koh Chang we chartered Northern Star a spiffy Bavaria 45 the top of the letter is shipmaster. This is our second Bavaria 45 rented from island Charters.

The yacht is a modern madness all electrical/ electronics controlled by a touch panel.....for the oldest of us beam me up Scotty!!!

Phil was on call 24/7 and calmly explained to us, two old sea dogs (Ja better looking than me for sure), how to navigate the electronic hurdles and any others on the way hitch up.
Also note that Phil was stretched to offer base assistance to 4 more yachts out at the same time we were out.

We will definitely come back to Koh Chang archipelago as so many places still to be explored.
The islands are quite hilly and the bay is quite deep. You can find a place to tuck down in bad weather. The Trees and nature are blooming above and below the sea . Some of the best swam in deep water from the stern swimming platform if you charter a Bavaria 45 !!!!!

On the various shore visit the Thainess extend to all restaurants we have visited in Ko Wai, Ko Mak delicious food and lovely people ashore .

Thank you Phil and Island Spirit Charters.

Just finished 6 days on a Bavaria C45. Had a great time with my wife and family. The staff here Phil and Craig are great - they really know the local area and so the briefing was excellent and we ventured out with confidence. The boat was nice too. This area is stunning - many nice beaches and great places to eat and drink onshore too. It's all quite close by without huge distances to travel, yet with great nearshore sailing grounds too for practicing the tacking and gybing. Excellent! Recommended!

My Wife Suveera and I have been holding RYA license Day and Coastal Skippers, the latter is me only, since 1999. Issued by the Legendary instructor Simon James, today the main director of 99% of racing events in Asia. And a dear friend ...!!!!!

We have seldom used our RYA Certificates or log any miles as we both joined several high profile racing Teams in Thailand for 20 Years culminating with 2 positions on TP 52, the ultimate racing machine.

In 2017 our benefactor and dear friend owner, after 40 years of competitive sailing, decided to hang the wheel on the wall and retired.  After one more year on the circuit with a smaller boat, "Loco", a Swan 42, we also decided to retire from active racing. Suveera, 63 years young, best spinnaker packer in Thailand and me, Frankie, 58 years young and 20 years in the pit.

We both decided, time to go cruising ......!!!!

Naturally, we thought about our old mate Phil Harper and his Sailing School Operation and Charter business Gulf Charter operating out of Ocean Marina and Ko Chang.

We quickly discovered that Phil's operation had expanded to Island Spirit, a conglomerate vertical integrated sailing enterprise encompassing Phuket, Ocean Marina, Ko Chang and Samui. Charter, Training, Yacht Brokerage and leasing - quite a jump up from the small and laid back Gulf Charter and the operation Phil was leading 20 years ago. Well done Brother !!!!!

After discussing with Mel, great booking and operation lady in Phuket, we chartered Alexa, an Oceanis 42, and went off sailing for 4 days toward Phi Phi Island.

All good but after 30 years of semi professional racing not cruising we both discovered that cruising was not like cycling, it is a complex 360 degree mix of individual action and coordinated, timely expertise.

Unfortunately, after a few rough nights, we both realized that we were not good enough... Well, not comfortable enough.

Time to go back to school and as we were sailing with Island Charter Phuket, we decided to go for Island Charter Ocean Marina sailing School.

We discussed with Ron, Phil partner in charge of the school and decided to go for an intense 4 days refresh course across the spectrum of theory and practical under the renowned IYT license out of Canada with schools all over the world and Island Charter is an official chapter of IYT.

Craig Verral, their top instructor, was called from Ko Chang base and asked to come and see us at the Ocean Marina to assess us and decide the program.
He is a lovely fella, holder of a 200 Tons ship Master license had crossed oceans multiple times, Skipped super yachts in the Med and was extremely patient and well mannered.

Furthermore, he also doubles as Base Manager of Ko Chang. We were humble that Phil and Ron diverted such a sailing celebrity to manage our refresh Skippers courses.

The following 4 days went like lightning in a blur of Meteorology, Navigation, Buoy and lighting signal, anchor procedures, conduct at sea, and a ton of maneuvers at the dock, fuel dock, bow approach, backing to the slip - all of the above with a seasoned but in great condition Oceanis 50, ‘White Squall’, great mother ship not a small yacht by any means .....beamy ... very beamy !!!!  I would not lie, it got my heart rate up and up while maneuvering amidst millions of USD yachts on our port and starboard !!!

All went well under Craig's calm and relaxing demeanor.

The last day knackered but more in tune with our sailing self we spend the morning to train Suveera with all kinds of dinghy maneuver.

As we are planning to sail only the two of us it was imperative that Suveera hone her ability on dinghy driving, beaching boat approach! Just in case that the “skipper” was not able to, due to diarrhea or something!!!!!

At the end of the 4th day we passed our IYT Bareboat Skippers courses with 89% success rate well above the minimum 75% required  -   yuppie !

We will be back to Mel Team in Phuket this week, in a Bavaria 45, ‘Southern Star’, 2 years old Bavaria, the beauty of the sea.   Can hardly wait...

This time - fully confident and ready to enjoy.

Summarizing :

1.      We have known Phil for the past 20 plus years and have only positive memories.

2.      Island Charter Phuket handled all of our teething problems professionally and with courtesy including 3 rounds of drinks upon our returns from the first charter.

3.      Island Charter sailing school customized, organized and managed our recertification, moreover through Craig helped us to build the confidence to go cruising again, only 2 of us on big boats.

4.      We are planning a monthly cruise between Phuket and Ko Chang and the two Bavaria 45 are too good to be true.

5.      We enjoyed our training so much that we are already planning for a Yacht Master course under Craig's leadership with a voyage to the virgin Similan Island, the best diving spot in the world.

If you need a professional but friendly and supportive Team to cater for all your sailing / Charter / Training needs for you, your family or a bunch of mates - Island Spirit is the place to go.

You can mention that you have read Frankie and Ja review and you will be treated with. CAPT Phil Rum and fresh Coconut concoction but only if you pass your course!!!!!

Happy sailing at island Charter.

I did a Competent Crew Course with Island Spirit in Pattaya in August. On account of the Corona situation the number of course mates was limited but this did not affect the professionalism and enthusiasm with which the team conducted the course. Extremely knowledgable trainers provide hands on practical hints based on their vast experience at sea, a special thanks to Craig who was a fabulous coach. The people of Island Spirit are around forever and I could clearly see the reason why. I'll be back soon to continue for skipper.

Phil and Craig were able to secure the catamaran and prepare everything for us in such a timely manner and with short notice as well! We had lots of fun cruising on the yacht in Koh Chang, snorkeling and paddle boarding. Overall, the service at Island Spirit is top-notch, and the cruise was definitely worth the price. Will definitely be back! :)

English is not my native language but i will try my best.I took the "Zero to Hero course" in February together with the fellow reviewer "Curious Traveler Z3428DEpetera" (please check below) and a bunch of lovely people. I do confirm everything he mentioned on his review and will spare you the repetition. First day, classroom. The instructor introduced himself as an Aussie with 80 Thousand Miles of sailing. I was like "Holly crap, we're going to learn something". My hopes were soon enough smashed when we realised the guy has no idea about the teaching process, is unable to share any knowledge or deliver what we all paid for, would openly mock you and look you down if you had the very bad idea to ask any questions, and sadly his only concern was to reach port (motoring of course) as soon as possible and hit the bar for his dearest beers. We never knew what to expect regarding the program, there was no structure and you could feel a certain amount of disorganisation within the school. We had to pay for dinners we were not informed about beforehand. The boats are carrying a lot of wear and tear, not everything was functioning as it should; being a boat manufacturer, I thought they would at least fix their school vessels above any other priority. To sum it up, we were not able to handle the sailing in a confident and independent way, at most we went through 20% of the IYT curriculum for our certificate. However, the big irony of this is when you finish the course and graduate, they refuse to charter you a boat because they consider you are still a "Zero". Happened to one of our crew mates! Ah and hey "PhilGCT, Director of whatever", for the sake of your dignity don’t give me the usual hypocrite answer and empty promises... I am done with you.

Hi sv_2022 I thank you for your further insight into our failings during February Sailing course. Since that course and the constructive feedback from your fellow reviewer, Epetera, much was done to bring about positive change. IYT International responded to that feedback and was in direct communication with the client Epetera. Island Spirit management has conducted a full review of the course protocols; we found failings and have revised and restructured our course and our instructional staffing. I think that these changes reflect in the positive feedback that followed and that they have put us back on a track that is consistent with our 15-year track record under IYT. Due to the Covid 19 pandemic and the full-lock-down of our region, our School is temporarily closed as are many others around the world. Once these restrictions are lifted, I offer you the same opportunity as I did Epetera: the option to re-take the course in part or its entirety, free of charge. Alternatively, if you'd prefer to build on your on-the-water experience, you could join our Koh Chang - Koh Samui - Koh Chang Mile-builders for no participation fee. These mile-builders are offered to our Sailing School alumni in May and September.
