Deer Park institute is a nice initiative by the organisers to encourage an understanding of Buddhist and Tibetan learning through various lectures, seminars etc.
The place is overwhelming at first with the mountains looming in the background and a very beautiful temple in the foreground. We went for a conference and were around 20 girls. The place is pleasant to stay in and nominal fee is charged for rooms and food if you want to stay overnight.
If you can, do visit their library. It has selections of a wide range of books and has a very good ambiance that compels you to grab a book and settle down on the floor. Attached to the learning institute is the monastery where you can see monks running about doing their day to day work in the morning. They have a beautiful garden as well which is well maintained and a pleasure to walk in when it rains.
Bir is a nice idyllic town and you can go to The Deer Park institute for the sessions they conduct or simply on a day visit, it will be worth it.

Deer Park regularly organizes workshop for spiritual as well as personal development and I have attended 3-4 workshops which have impact on my life in one way or the other. They also offer stay and food at reasonable prices.

Wonderful place with nice serene surroundings and teachings. Staff are very helpful and the quaint little bookshop has a range of books on offer.Additionally the meditation hall is simple but serene and calm. They recently build a new “amphitheater” to facilitate Buddhist teachings and also introduced a range of music and poetry throughout the course.Would recommend anyone to check it out and take a break out of their busy life’s to just sit and be

I did not attend any of their courses and I am only reviewing this property as a place to stay. The room is very basic with a rock hard bed, sheets, pillow and blanket. They do not provide toilet paper, soap or a towel. You can easily purchase them from stores nearby. It is a Buddhist resor, so you have to sign a contract upon checking in. The contract stipulates that you will not kill any living being while there, and that you will recycle everything. The room had many bugs such as mosquitoes, wasps and flies. There was no trash can (except for toilet paper) and you had to sort everything into bins outside. You had to empty your used toilet paper to a bin and clean your own room. The price of the room was beyond reasonable, so you get what you pay for. You can sign up for three meals a day in advance. After a meal everybody washes their dishes and puts them away. This property is mainly geared to people who attend their courses. At night you can hear dogs barking. There are many stray dogs around the property. The room door has a metal door latch inside and outside. Once someone accidentally latched me in the room and I could not get out. The windows have iron bars. I had to wait for a passer-by to let me out.

Clean and nice place. Basically a tibetan monastry which is converted into a meditation and learning centre. One can sign-up for different courses like vipasana....
They also have accomodation and you can stay even if you are not doing a course. But I would recommend only those who are interested in meditation. Unlike usualy tiben monastry stay, here they also have a good cafe and tasty food. Basic rooms but clean.
To feel this place and peace, I would recommend staying here rather than just visiting on a day trip.

Deer Park Institute is a small Tibetan Bhuddist complex in Bir with a nice temple, a library, rooms, and an eating hall. The grounds are clean and peaceful. I just visited briefy, but it seemed like a nice place. My friends stayed there overnight and it they enjoyed the experience (and it was inexpensive). There isn't much to do in Bir, so this place is worth a visit to pass some time and learn a bit of something. It is in the Colony a little bit NW of the main center. Everyone knows where it is, so just ask people as you go.

Palpung Sherabling Monastic Seat is located in village of Upper Bhattu 6km from the village Chougan , Bir landing site & is 6km away from Baijnath .
In 1975, the present 12th Kenting Tai Situpa's disciples from Derge & Nangchen region who settled in Bir, Himachal Pardesh ,donated a protected pine forested land located in the foothills of the Himalayas. The building is built of modern materials & finished in traditional Tibetan architectural fashion following the ancient science of geomancy .
The monastery, only 6km from the nearest town of Baijnath, retains its calmness & isolation & is situated in the gentle pine forested foothills of the Kangra valley.
The 30 acres of land are formed by 3 south sloping ridges. Most of the buildings are located on the ridges of the hills or in forest glades as not to destroy the growth of trees & plants for the future.
The main Monastery of Palpung Sherabling is built upon 2.5 acres of land in front of the Sherab Ling Institute. It has 250 monks' quarters, (which accommodate over 500 monks) 3 shrine halls, 6 shrine rooms, & retreat houses for monks & nuns .
The main shrine halls overlook a large sandstone courtyard surrounded by monks quarters.
There are 8 large stupas stand at the roadside of entrance of Palpung Sherabling & serve as its landmark & are the first images of Palpung Sherabling for visitors.
we were lucky to have been allowed to witness their evening prayer session & though we were attending it for the first time , we were left mesmerized by the peaceful mantras .
we were delighted by witnessing the cleanliness maintained in the entire premises & were told about their ecofriendly practices & were left amazed by their daily schedule & the discipline observed by all members residing there .
for once , we felt we had been transported to another world altogether .
I have also studied in a premier institute for my medical studies , but never came across such world class infrastructure . I was left spell bound & did not wish to leave the premises any sooner.
I also came to know that they also offer rooms for guests @ reasonable tariff .
I promised myself to definitely return to this amazing place & experience the peaceful surroundings once again in complete solitude.
this is a must visit destination if you are travelling thru Mandi - Palampur - Mcleodganj sector & unlike other Buddhist monasteries in north eastern part of India or in Dharamshala , these are away from the crowded touristy places & perfect place for meditation & self reflection as well as for admiring sheer architectural beauty .

A Nice serene institution. A Lovely Building. The Gardens outside are full of Prayer Flags. There are normally many Indian and International visitors. There are some rooms for visitors to stay.

Can we stay here, if not participating in any course?
Written 5 May 2016
Deer Park provides accommodation only for participants in Institute programs,
students/practitioners doing personal retreat, and scholars/writers/artists (as approved by
management). However, You can check with the admin before you get in. This institute offers many courses so that rooms always occupied. Better check with the admin before your trip.

How clean are the shared dormitories and bathrooms at deer park?
Written 2 July 2015
Hi Maitreyee - As I didn't stay at Deer Park [it was fully booked] I can't say. What I can say is that everyone in our party was by the management of Deer Park - in terms of efficiency of meal times etc - was very good. Toilets were extremely clean etc. So I would be very surprised if the dormitories were not also clean. It also depends a bit on who you end up in the dormitory with! Good Luck.
