We were recommended this area by a German friend who told us that this was one of favourite places in Germany. It is very hard to discover very much about the area from any guide book, and yet it is every bit a beautiful as Switzerland and much better value.
The mountains, the lakes and the quaint buildings are all stunning, and the easy access to so many wonderful towns and cities make this a first class spot in which to spend a few days or a coupe, of weeks.
Within a very short distance are Munich, Salzburg or Innsbruck and also so much to see in the Bavarian alps.
We discovered very few other British travellers, or from any other country, for that matter. It is for this reason that we feel the Germans keep their best regions to themselves and do not broadcast the fact that it is hard to find much lovelier scenery in Northern Europe.
If you like mountains and lakes, you will love this unspoilt area too.

I took a train from Munich especially to see the lake and visit the Brauerei restaurant. Well pleased I did, well worth the visit. The town itself has plenty to offer the visitor with and it would make a good destination to spend a few relaxing days.I will be. Ack.

We went here in mid-October during a beautiful clear and sunny day. The scenery was very impressive and the walks along/around the lake are well worth it. This is definitely one of the best lakes to visit in the area.

One of the most beautiful places south of Munich is the Lake Tegernsee.
You can easily get there by car and train. The lake has an expansion from Gmund in the north to Rottach-Egern in the south of about 7 km and a width of 2 km. Bad Wiessee, Rottach-Egern, the town of Tegernsee and Gmund are the main sites, scattered around the lake.
Bordered by lush green mountains, a perfect scenery will give you all you need for a relaxed staying all year round.
The travelers are provided with hotels, which are mostly traditionally built in the style of the Alps, and lots of vacation apartments throughout the area.
You can round the lake by bicycle, on foot and, of course, by car.
Well maintained bicycle tracks and ways offer all you need to keep you fit. At every corner you will find restaurants and cafes which boast themselves to have the best cuisine.

Tips:
-Visit Munich by train from Gmund or Tegernsee. The trip takes you about 55 minutes to the Munich main station in the center of the town.
- Visit Wildbad Kreuth, a famous party place of the Bavarian CSU.
- Take a tour by boat across the lake which will cost you 12 € a person.

I've visited this place many times in both summer and winter . You can swim , hike and cycle in the summer and ski and sledge in the winter . The scenery is breathtaking and the people friendly and helpful . The area is such that you can't not want to be outdoors and active . For family holidays , or a romantic trip as a couple or with a group of friends you will not be disappointed !

Let’s assume you are in Bavaria. Despite having watched ‘The Sound of Music’ two-hundred times you are still not sick of wildflower-studded meadows in front of alpine vistas. Instead of the usual four-week sun soak at a luxury villa in the Caribbean you have chosen this South-German state because you thought it was worth a visit (WHICH IT IS!) and were looking for something different (GOOD ON YEA). Then treat yourself to something truly special by visiting the Tegernsee.

But be prepared to pinch yourself. This is so picture-postcard-perfect that one feels the need to make the odd reality check. I was constantly reminded of one of those idealised dreamlands that can be found on model railways. It is no wonder this is the playground of the rich and famous. Surprisingly perhaps prices in the various bars, restaurants and cafes are quite reasonable. Whatever your taste, from towering cakes to rugged stews, it will be catered for. Try, for example, the former abbey, now Tegernsee Palace, for wholesome food and drink. Its own distillery can fortify you with something more substantial.

If you sit on a terrace with a glass of wine in your hand and watch the sunset I advise to have a tissue handy, though. It really is that beautiful. Alternatively, experience it from the deck of a small ship during one of the scheduled trips around the lake.

Should that let you slide into dreams of buying a place there I have to inform you that, unfortunately, in contrast to the cost of a cup of coffee properties change hands for London prices. Even for modest pied-à-terres high six-figure sums are regarded as the cheap end.

Football fans might even catch a glimps of the odd Bayern Munich star.

Loved the atmosphere, the houses and the lake with the boats on it. Have to be careful on the train to catch to get there as it has one destination on the front and the carriages to Tegernsee are at the back. The train splits into three on the way.

The area consist of the beautiful lake and parish church of Saint Quirinus. The north wing hosts the Herzoglich Bayerisches Brauhaus Tegernsee (Ducal Bavarian Brewery of Tegernsee), one of Germany's oldest breweries. Boat rental at Tegernsee cost 9 Euro for 30 minutes but it was very pleasant and amazing experience. One of the best places to eat and drink not only in Tegernsee also in Bavaria is Bräustüberl beer hall . My favorite dish was smoked salmon with Bavarian style potatoes pan cake

Spend as much time around Lake Tegernsee as you can. The combination of the lake and surrounding Mountains is heavenly. You can be as lazy or as energetic as you want. Everywhere is clean. The locals are helpful and always glad to be of assistance, even if you cannot sprechen Deutch. If you are there during the summer be sure to go along to one of the many "Wald Fests" for some great beer, food and fun. Also there is the firework display in early August held at the lake. Winter is also sublime; just like a christmas card. There are so many B&Bs and Holiday apartmants to choose from that offer good value and all decorated in the typical Bavarian style. Free bus service around the lake and various discounts to local venues to all who book locally. BROST.

A beautiful lake! I advise this place to everybody who wants to spend some time in a quiet place and in the middle of the nature! No smog, no traffic: only silence and a beautiful light!
