About
From the 10th century onwards, this town became an important link with the Slav peoples, especially those of Poland and Pomerania. During its period of greatest prosperity, from the 12th century onwards, the architecture of Bamberg strongly influenced northern Germany and Hungary. In the late 18th century it was the centre of the Enlightenment in southern Germany, with eminent philosophers and writers such as Hegel and Hoffmann living there.

- Oldfart1939Billings, Montana392 contributionsMy favorite German "Medieval City!"I planned a visit of 2 1/2 days this trip, as I had visited Bamberg once before in 2017. The Altstadt is a UNESCO World Heritage site, as the city was not bombed during WW II, and most of the old buildings remain intact today. I recommend seeing the highlights by a walking tour on foot, taking lotsa time to simply enjoy the ambiance of the Altstadt area and sitting at a cafe or Biergarten to enjoy the view of the old Rathaus on it's own island in the Regnitz river. If I had to pick a single city to get the "feel" of German Culture past, Bamberg would be my number one choice. The Little Venice is another "can't miss" feature and the Jesuit Church overlooking the Obst Markt is also worthwhile to see the interior.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 October 2023
- Richard WPenn Valley, California869 contributionsScenic Bavarian beauty. What a great historic town to visit and enjoy. The architecture , people, history and baked goods are something to soak in and enjoy. When in Bamberg be sure to try their famous Rauch Bier--smoky flavored beer. There is a whole story about a large fire destroying most of the city and "tainting " the grain used for brewing. But the grain was used as the people still needed beer. The flavor is subtle, not strong peat like some Scotch whisky. We enjoyed the experience and the local flavor.Visited November 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 October 2023
- Shane BTe Awamutu, New Zealand809 contributionsOne of the more interesting towns we visited lots of photosProbably took more photos here then anywhere else there was a lot to see great place to walk around from the Cathedral with its gardens to the town ship with the river running through, around every corner a surprise and a photo opportunity. There are over 1400 heritage listed buildings in the town gives an idea of the size of the central area. Town is known for its smokey beer which I had to try and did have a distinct smokey flavour. Definitely worth a visit would allow a day to take it all in.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 16 November 2023
- NoosaKingsNoosa, Australia398 contributionsLoved it so much, we extended our visitWe highly recommend Bamberg as a destination. It is located on the canals of the Regnitz River, in northern Bavaria and is a UNESCO site. We selected it as a stopover and ending up staying for 10 days. There are endless things to do here, from sighting in the old town, to long walks around the town for exercise. Our mornings began with a big round trip walk along the river. Breakfast in one of the cafes before returning to the accommodation to get ready for a day of sighting in the many attractions. Food is excellent everywhere: we usually have a big lunch and not much for dinner. We did the touristy river cruise, which was exceptional and we learned more about the town.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 January 2024

City is a notch hilly so if You have problem walking a little uphill think twice. But it's definitely a great trip. Very good restaurants with a smoke beer. We enjoyed this short trip.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 20 September 2024

We arrived at Bamberg mid-morning on a day trip from Nuremberg, returning in late-afternoon, and a single day was probably plenty for us. The thing to do is a walking tour of the old city, which gives you a good chance to see lots of medieval sights. However, after visiting a few churches and walking along some historic alleys, we felt like we were quickly seeing all of the good sights.

Like Regensburg, it is a World Heritage town that escaped war damage. The main attractions are the old town hall and cathedral that can be seen from the bridge over the Regnitz River.
I went up from the old town to the Brewery Museum, made a big circle, had cheesecake and cappuccino on the way, and went down along the Little Venice district, which is a little different from Venice, on the way back.
It is a little far from the station to the old town, so I bought, printed, and carried a Tages Ticket Plus (ALL DAY TICKET PLUS in English, a one-day ticket for two or more people in Japanese) that can be used by two or more people from the VGN website in advance. (It's the same in Nuremberg.)
To get there, there are frequent buses such as 901, 902, 907, 911, and 931 bound for ZOB (bus terminal) from the bus stop on the right hand side across the wide road in front of Bamberg station, and after getting off at ZOB, walk a little southwest.
I was able to get there and back by catching a timely bus with almost no waiting time on either the way there or back.

I have visited Bamberg many times over the past 15 years and on each occasion I always take the time to visit and walk around the Altstadt, (Old Town). There is so much to see and to photograph. The Bars, shops. cafe's and restaurants are many and varied, there's always something new to discover as you explore.

This is a beautiful and historic city and one of the main attractions on our river cruise. The lovely views across the river to the row of buildings is the photo opportunity and a fitting introduction to the city.
No wonder this is a World heritage site. The city is a delight to walk through, with so much to offer. The buskers on the market square provided a great background and mood to this memorable visit.

We visited as a walking tour whilst on a Uniworld River cruise.
Bamberg Alstadt is a very well preserved Unesco heritage listed city with Baroque style architecture.
The historic substance of Bamberg's Alstadt is mostly original with over 1000 houses under heritage protection.
I really enjoyed wa;lking around this town with lots of shopd, cafes restaurants. and bars.
Its famous for smoked beer so please do try as I did. It was quite unusual.

It is located behind the station, about a 5-7 minute walk. There is a view of the kitchen behind the bar.
The owner is very cordial and makes you feel welcome, very personal. She provided information about the beers available. The owner also came to the table to explain some things about the accessibility of the Sandkerwa (Bamberg festivals). The restaurant looks cozy. The food is delicious. Especially the garlic soup. This was prepared with fresh lemon which gave a nice slightly sour taste. I had never eaten anything like it before, but a few days later, in another city, I ate garlic soup again and thought the first one was by far the best. Several vegan and vegetarian dishes

I was looking forward to visiting the city, so I was even more disappointed when I
realized that I was not welcome here with my wheelchair.
In the large parking garage next to the tourist center there is no space for disabled people and certainly no parking spaces for women. When asked, the answer is that this is not technically possible. Otherwise, disabled parking spaces are more than in short supply.
It is normal that cobblestones dominate in an old city, but not having sunken sidewalks and sidewalks that taper off so sharply that you have to walk the whole way back is unpleasant.
In addition, the people of Bamberg do not shy away from parking on the remaining sidewalks in such a way that neither wheelchairs nor strollers can get past them. This means that wheelchair users have to move onto the street.
In 2008/2009, accessibility was considered, but it seems to have fallen asleep.
My tip to the city administration: You can take a tour of your city in a wheelchair. A notepad would not be a bad idea.
When asked which city tour is suitable for wheelchair users? Simply none.
Efforts have been made to ensure that the world cultural heritage is a reality, but those who do not conform to the norm with their handicaps have been left behind. What a pity.

A great city, sandstone buildings, the Regnitz runs through Bamberg and with the small houses it almost looks like Venice. Very nice people. And the Pizzeria Henrietta is recommended. You can easily explore this small town in a day.
We really liked it.

I think it's totally overrated. The old town is manageably small - and if you put away the pink glasses really nothing special. There are a variety of other places with a much lower reputation that are much more charming.
If you look at the photos that exist of Bamberg you can see that they are always the same few subjects. There's no more.

How much time do we need to visit Bamberg? Is 1 day suffucient or would it be better to plan for 2 days?
Written 31 August 2017
One day should be sufficient if you plan a nice walk to see the historic architecture. of course you can visit all the nice pubs and restaurants in that one day, or can you?

Ciao,

Hi, we parked in the parkhaus Zentrum Nord. Not exactly in the center, but you reach the historic center in 5-10 min walk. The price was reasonable. I do not remember rate, but I guess it might have been 1,0-1,5 EUR per hpur.

Vom Haupteingang / Ausgang einfach geradeaus laufen, kann man zu Fuß laufen. Dann kommt man direkt in die Altstadt.
