My wife and I visited Mainau Island on a very cold February day, fully knowing that the magnificent flower beds of the island would not be visible at that time of the year, but with the sole purpose of visiting Schloss Mainau, which all of the guidebooks we consulted said was historically the site of a castle built by the Teutonic Order, albeit rebuilt since to serve the Swedish royal family.
Imagine our disappointment when we discovered, first, that the Schloss could not be visited at all (it is still inhabited by members of the Swedish royal family), second, that even the small room dedicated to art exhibitions was closed, and third, that no remnants whatsoever of its use by the Teutonic Order were visible or even mentioned anywhere (a single book on the subject in the gift shop, otherwise devoted to articles having nothing to do either with the original site or even the current use by the royal family).
To top it off, there is a bridal shop in the Schloss that is either operated by or uses the name of a member of the royal family, which might have been interesting to see, but it, too, is closed except by prior appointment on weekdays.
Perhaps this criticism would be better directed to the misleading explanations given in the guide books than to the site itself, but we were certainly very disappointed to « visit » a site which could not really be visited at all and which does not correspond to the description given of it.
On the plus side, the adjacent church can be visited and it is certainly a beautiful example of a baroque church.

The Mainau Insel, with the castle and natural attractions is something for everybody. Every angle resulting in Postcard worthy pics. At the castle you can sit comfortably and enjoy deliccious snacks and meals, feeling almost as royalty ;)

I didn't really like this place, but you might if you're really into gardening. The cost of admission was 19 Euros at the time we visited, which seemed pretty steep to me. There are gardens, including plants and trees you would not normally see in this climate, a castle, a church, views of the Bodensee and lots of souvenir stands. When we visited the crowds were overwhelming. Nearby Konstanz, which is a real town, is free and much more interesting.

We had heard this place should be very beautiful but were disappointed. Entrance fee is 19 EUR and for that you get to see what your home town's botanical garden probably offers for free. The super-rich owners even charged 40 euro cents for the island's own apples!

The Island Mainau where the Schloss Mainau is located is a must attraction of the Lake Constance region. The various gardens the Palmenhaus uand the Schmetterlingshaus are besides the Schloss the main attractions

It's difficult to decide what mark to give the Schloss as it's not actually open to the general public but that having said, it's not the main reason visitors come to the island. A wing serves as a gift shop/toilets and a large room currently holds an art exhibition. That having said, the gift shop does have some reasonable stuff for sale and we purchased a large piece of wall art that I then had to carry with me for the rest of our visit on the island! The neighbouring church is quite ornate but not very peaceful due to the sheer amount of tourist feet coming and going - it can be hired out for weddings and with it's immaculately tended gardens around and about the entrance it must make a good venue for that memorable day.

Schloss Mainau old and restored Schloss of the Swedish dynasty and decor of the Andre Rieu's concert: Rosen as den Suden, is pretty. Staff is friendly. Church is also good for a visit.

If you don’t expect too much, you won’t be disappointed. The building from outside is promising, but that's it. The little part that can be visited is only worth for your time if you’re already there. It sounds ridiculous, but the most impressive part was the toilet, with a nicely carved wooden door, and with the little star like lights above the stairs. Otherwise nearly the whole place is occupied by souvenir shops and this commercialism is so upsetting, that my principles stopped me even to have a look.

When we visited, much of this complex was either being reconstructed or refurbished so it seemed like a giant gift shop. The church was pretty inside but after the churches in Konstanz it wasn't anything special. I think the main drawcards for Manau are the flowers and butterflies and I certainly wouldn't take a boat trip to see the Schloss part.

Gostaria de saber como faço para chegar da estação de ônibus Constance Döbeleplatz à Ilha de Mainau. Irei em meados de outubro, gostaria de saber sobre as temperaturas nessa época e se a ilha ainda estará florida no outono.
