The church is in the centre of Neuss and remarkably big. On the outside as well as on the inside, you can wonder and gaze at the play of forms, lines, decorative details, wall paintings and stained glass windows. It acts as a Gesamtkunstwerk.

This church was begun in the 11th century. It contains a golden shrine that holds the bones of St. Quirinus, a Roman officer martyred in the 2nd century. The church was an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages.
Like many churches, it has Romanesque, Gothic, and later elements. What I found intriguing were the choir stalls that have important sculptural arm ends and misericordias (on the bottom of the choir stall seats are carvings on a variety of subjects).

It looks impressive when you see it, when you walk around it. Unfortunately we were not able to visit it since it was closed. Wondering what the inside would be like.

The Sint-Quirinuschurch in Neuss is one of the most important late Romanesque church buildings on the Lower Rhine,
The church was built between 1209 and 1230 and was proclaimed basilica minor by pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
According to a ancient tales, the relics of the Holy Quirinus were brought from Rome to Neuss in 1050, which resulted in a stream of pilgrims. The pilgrims raised money, which enabled the constriction of the current church in 1209.
Very characteristic was the almost 100 meter high western tower, which determined the urban appearance of Neuss until the 18th century. A lightning strike in 1741 and the subsequent fire put an end to this. The gothic spiers of both the western and eastern tower above the celebration and some dwarf galleries were not rebuilt during the restoration.
Instead, the western tower was fitted with a flat pyramid roof and the celebration was given a baroque dome with the statue of Quirinus on it.
After the French Revolution, valuable objects appeared to be destroyed or did not return.
The church was taken into use as storage space and the monastery buildings were demolished.
Also in the following centuries, the church did not escape damage. A fire raged in the tower in 1914 and bombings in 1944 caused severe damage.
But the church was constantly restored, although unfortunaltely not much of the rich interior and all the old splendor is left today.
Nevertheless, the church is still one of the places to visit in Neuss.
Admission is free, although a small donation is always appreciated.

This church was built in 13th century and completed 1230. I can't stop admiring how they have managed to build this one almost 800 years ago.
You can reach this place easily with tram (#709) from Düsseldorf, ticket costs EUR2,7 oneway and takes about 15min. If you can't get teenagers to come with you otherwise, there is TK Maxx close by, if shopping motivates better the younger generation.
