- Gene R JSilver Spring, Maryland10,663 contributions22 historic buildings filled with local period exhibits. After paying A$10 each, we walked clockwise in and around the 22 fully exhibited buildings discovering lots of local interest, including; local rare Urangamite gems, Japanese glass fishing floats, gate sign quilt, pictures and furnishings of the new 1905 SS Maheno(wrecked on Fraser Is.), pictures and exhibits of Fraser Is logging, rare endemic Fraser Is. Creeper in bloom, 1903 Oldsmobile(cost $650), old grocery store with Campbell's soup and Kellog corn flakes and many old tractors, vehicles and equipment. Thanks for the 5 Stars and great review. - Felicity D1 contributionThoroughly enjoyable afternoon at the Hervey Bay museumMy friend and I spent a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon at the Hervey Bay Museum. We were amazed at the size of the place. It looks deceivingly small from the entrance. The volunteer staff are fantastic. They are friendly, helpful and do an incredible job maintaining a huge collection. We were so impressed with the size and layout of the place. It bought back so many memories from our youth and our parents and grandparents times and we learnt so much about what it was like in the area when it was first colonized. I can highly recommend visiting the Hervey Bay museum. Make sure you allow a couple of hours.Great Review. - Trish JHervey Bay, Australia2 contributionsSomething for everyone to see!Great value for money and a fabulous way to spend a few hours reminiscing about things from your parents, grandparents or even your own childhood. My friend and I went on a Sunday morning and were really surprised at the size of the site and the quality of the varied exhibits. We had a few laughs and shared some stories along the way. My favourite display of the Maheno wreck, Urangan Pier and Fraser Island brought back fond memories of my childhood, growing up in Hervey Bay. TIP: Make sure you have a water bottle with you as there's nowhere mid-site to buy a drink, only at reception. Full credit to the many volunteers who have done a wonderful job sharing and preserving history for everyone to enjoy. What a great review Trish. We are planning water stations mid site soon. - ASHLEIGH S1 contributionBlew my expectations out of the waterThis little historical village is not little at all. There is so much to see and explore. We couldn't believe how large it really was, we just kept finding more and more to see. The collection is far bigger than we expected and it is so well displayed and put together. Each room tells a different story and some rooms feel like you have taken a step back in time. I am proud that my town has such a beautiful tribute to the past. And the volunteers of the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum have done a remarkable job putting it all together. What a great review Ashleigh. I will make sure it is passed on to our volunteers. - Margaret W1 contributionGreat look at life through the agesDefinitely worth the $10 entrance fee. Around 3 acres of buildings, sheds and gardens. Allow at least 1 and 1/2 hours to see it all. - GoPlaces569523809853 contributionsAn amazing experience and very informative.I have lived in the bay for 25 years, and it wasn’t until today that I finally went to the museum, and now I could kick myself for waiting so long. It is amazing. The volunteer staff are so helpful and very informative. The displays are as good as any I have seen anywhere historically. The knowledge of the people doing the demonstrations is very good. The layout of the village makes it very easy to manoeuvre, and it is signed posted very well. What I thought would be a one hour visit turned into over four hours. My friend and I are both returning as we believe there were many things we did not get time to see.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 24 March 2024
- Mark EWhitianga, New Zealand701 contributionsSydney to Cairns 2023Great little historical village and museum. Lots of period exhibits. Well set out. Lots of attractions and museum pieces to see. You will need to allow a couple or more hours. The entrance fee is very reasonable for the amount of history you will see and learn. Good parking.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 April 2024
- Shelby P1 contributionLove love love every momentThis experience will last a lifetime. I adore feeling like I'm going back in time. The only disappointment was the church being guarded and locked up with the screen door, but I bet some foul guests might be the cause of that.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 April 2024
- Guide3244831 contributionA Wonderful Yesteryear Experience. What was needed for and how our fore-bearers survived. This museum is an absolute "must do" for any Australian History Buff and for those interested in our past. Being 70+, it was a walk down memory lane for me. We went on a Sunday so that we could also watch some of the demonstrations. That, combined with taking in all the displays and artefacts on show, took us three and a half hours to look through, and more time could have been spent but closing time was upon us. This establishment is worth every penny/cent spent on it, and more. Adult admission was a paltry $10 per adult. It all goes towards the maintenance and upgrading of the displays, with all work/roles carried out by volunteers only. Although having won many awards from State and local groups, they get no government support, which I personally, think is a disgrace. Without financial help, I particularly fear that much of the old original timbers used, in the slab hut for example, will not survive for future generations to be able to physically walk through and experience. What a loss that would be! If not given as much protection as is possible with today's technologies, they will undoubtedly perish. I know of no other museum that displays so much of our history. The presentation is wonderful and so educational.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 August 2024

Had a great visit back in time to this hidden gem. Only $10 per head was well worth it. Lots to see. Great history about the Pier and exhibition. A must see when you visit Hervey Bay.

This is the best regional Museum we have ever seen. The live black smith, the wood turning, corn shelling and rope making demostrations given by devotees made the static desplays come to life. Many of the the items displayed brought back memories of own younger days. The quality and quantity of the displays certainly warrants a good 2 to 3 hours. Well done Hervey Bay Historical Society!

Visiting a local museum is always on our to do list when travelling. This one is up there with the best!
Looks small from the front which might make some question paying the $10 entry fee, but don't be concerned. It's surprisingly large! We moved through the exhibits and village reasonably quickly, and it took us 90 minutes. Wish we more time available to take it slower.
There is a blacksmith demonstration daily 1-3pm. Unfortunately we didn't have time available to stay for that, but they have a video of the demonstration looping on a screen in the blacksmith area, so we didn't miss out.
The staff at Hervey Bay Museum are lovely and knowledgeable. As we always find in these small town museums, there are people on duty who are passionate about the history of their beloved home and are happy to sit and chat about anything and everything to do with their town.
Highly recommend putting this museum on your list of things to do when you visit Hervey Bay. It's a gem!

A great experience to see all the different exhibits within the museum. In my opinion the best exhibit is the school. The staff who work at the museum are even better!
Question:
During my visit at the museum I was given an item that involved a dollar bill with a small hole as well as text that asked to fit a 50cent coin through the small hole. After various attempts I was unable to complete this task. During my time a staff who is supposedly a magician was not present. I wanted to ask if you can tell me how to complete this task?

We really appreciate your review and the 5 Stars.
The actual words should have been " Can you push a 50 cent piece through the hole"
To do this, you place a 50c piece on the table, take the dollar bill and place over it, then using a pen or pencil poked through the hole, push the 50c cent piece around the table.
I trust this answers your question.

We spent a good hour and a half here wandering through the different buildings of the Historical Village. There’s so much to see and if you visit on Sundays they also have different demonstrations that you can participate in. We loved the old buggy, the music room, the homestead and the beautiful wedding dresses and other costumes that were on display.

One of the best historical museums you’ll find in Queensland, demonstrations by blacksmith, 100 year old corn machine and demonstrating corn uses so nothing was wasted, rope maker showing different materials. Old school house, railway station and pretty much a whole old town. You won’t be disappointed spending a few hours there. Cheap day out for a family. Kids will love it!
