Very interesting structure with a variety of objects on display: a collection of kris swords, furniture and various other artefacts.

Low entrance costs of Rp 10'000 for foreign visitors. Ample parking provided.

Few foreigners hit this spot which is a shame because this really is an attractive venue and an interesting way to see how the upper classes lived in a more remote part of the archipelago - before the Suramadu bridge!

Situated at the eastern island of the dry, barren island of Madura, Sumenep is, without a doubt, the island's finest town. Though it is not the largest settlement on the island today, Sumenep trumps all other towns in history, culture and allure. There are only a few more charming towns on Java itself.

This small city has a history dating back to the Hindu kingdoms which flourished in Java more than five hundred years ago. Its aristocrats occasionally make an appearance in the royal histories of the great Javanese empires, often playing a part in palace intrigues. Though Madurese royalty no longer holds even ceremonial power, Sumenep Palace remains as a testimony to this long historical legacy. The guides are extremely welcoming, as they rarely see foreign visitors. Highlights include some Hindu-era statues and a bathing pool with a 'fountain of eternal youth' reputation.

The collection awaiting inside is so very impressive, unfortunately some pieces are falling apart due to lack of funds to properly take care of them. But very impressive all the same. Massive storage of furniture and royal fixtures from centuries ago. Truly inspiring which should be taken better care before it is lost.

The guided tour was very worthwhile taking in as it did the royal horse carriage museum, the kraton and the taman sari. It was an ideal starting point for a later trip to the royal cemetery at AstaTinggi. The bupati's office is behind the kraton and he walks through the old section to host events there. There is no doubt that Sumenep has the most to hold the attention of visitors, be they locals or foreigners.

We went here as part of a tour from our small expedition cruise ship and they had laid on some traditional music and traditional snacks for us. It is worth a short visit. You are able to see part of the palace including a rather nice courtyard garden. There are however wooden gates making it clear that the are is private past those. There are a few rooms in the part you can go to. Just across from the Palace is the small museum with a replica of a carriage given to the King by the monarch of the UK. The expedition team weren't sure which monarch it was, a search says it was "the Queen of England", which must mean it was Victoria but I do not know whether the information in the search was accurate. Given that it was unusual to have a Queen I tend to think it is likely to be. There are a few interesting rooms in the Museum, of which we had a short guided tour.

This museum is specifically build for preserving Sumenep royal family legacy. It offers variety of relics, weapons and chariot of the royal family. Although itsn't as fancy as other museum, you will learn local folklore and other Sumenep kingdom history.

The kraton or palace is worth-visiting. There are some fine buildings to see and interesting exhibits. Mostly dating from the 18th century. You are free to stroll around. There is the main palace building, the water gardens, the museum within the kraton, the gate house, and a small museum across the road.

I was shown around the museum and palace by a lovely young lady who spoke excellent English. Museum has much on interest; a carriage gifted by King George of England, a huge Koran plus photos of the kings of Sumenep.
