Jan 2023 • Friends
Us 4 friends now in our 40s went for a trip to Auli, known as Switzerland of India or mini switzerland in the third week of January.
Our main objective was to experience snow fall which was a sure thing in Jan. We had booked in Hilltop skiing resort Auli. There are only 2 resorts there, the other being govt run, but comparatively newer. This resort was 10 years old showing its age.
We travelled from Delhi to Auli by a rented car. Usually the base station of Auli is Joshimath. We get a ropeway from Joshimath to Auli hilltop and the resorts are near the 8th pole of the Ropeway. But for us because of the "reseeding land problem" in Joshimath and the first pillar being affected the ropeway was not function. But there is a well maintained tar road from Joshimath to the hill bas of Auli which is around 10km long. From there you have to either take a 4*4 SUV or there is chaircar to the hill top. There is GMVN( uttarachand govt run for tourism promotion ) office from where the Chair car goes uphill. A ticket of Rs500 is there for to and fro travel per person. So we took the chair car uphill which travels a distance of ≤ 1km. The temperature was -2 at the time of our arrival which fell to -9 at night.
When we reached Auli, it had one small episode of snowfall 2 days before. But we could see the bear hills all around the hotel. Breath taking view it was, but we didn't know that was the least you get.
The Next day we had a trekking trip to 360 degree point up hill. Called so because of the 360° view of himalayas you get. And we had a skiing training of sort for 1 hour near the place. Next day we trekked to RR point through the jungle. It had an Army camp earlier which had been abandoned.
On the second night we had not good snowfall which we found out about when we got up the next day. It was a beautiful site, the whole area covered in snow. That day we planned a mule ride half way up 360°, as we were planning for a longer trek that day past 360. We walked a few more kms up the mountain and had many photo breaks. On the way back we took a different path through the jungle where we found a frozen water body. But on the last night of our stay it started snowing heavily. When we got up it was snowing. We had planned an early morning check out, but it was delayed because of the snow situation and the chair car started functioning late. After reaching GMVN we had to take a Jimny with studded tyres as no other car was able to move in on foot deep snow. All in all it was an experience of life which we are never going to forget

I visited on 28th Dec. The weather was perfect. There is a ropeway from Joshimath to Auli, which is 14kms. There are only 300 tickets per day sold costing ₹1000 pp, for which people stand in d Q from 3am. So, wud b better to take the car to the top, only challenge are d narrow roads & army trucks blocking d way. Once u reach d top, u May choose to stay there(expensive) or stay in Joshimath. The view is spectacular, u can c d Himalayas & d highest peak Nanda devi. To buy d ticket , u hv to climb 35-40 steps. There is a Chair lift from 8-5pm, the cost is ₹1000 both ways. U cud take 1 way & return trekking down or use d tubes, where d local guys will help & charge ₹300-400, it’s fun to try that. U cud also try skying.

Auli- snow, cold, sking, cablecar, hiking, majestic views, thrill rides, horse ride, minus temperature....all that one is looking from a hill station. Planning in advance is the key to this superb location. Mind it thr road from Joshimath to Auli is only for brave and experts

Known as ski resort , we decided to experience auli in summer. Perched on a steep green slope at a height of 9 to 11 thousand feet. The surrounding high barren mountain provide a stark contrast to this greenery. Auli is surrounded by snowcapped peaks with a close view of Nandadevi ,Trishul , Bharmal , Hathi parvat, Mana Parvat , kamet etc. Perhaps closest view of these without trekking. From lower Auli best view is from a temple above GMVN resort. Sunset view is mind blowing. We were there for 4 days and most of the time we did nothing but gazing at the awesome views.
Auli has 4 resorts, biggest being GMVN ski resort which is connected to ski slopes by chairlift( RS 300 return). Devi darshan lodge commands the best view and us roughly 1 km from Gmvn resort.
Ride up and down ski lift is great fun and affords great view. Don't try walking upto ski slopes unless u r used to walking at heights or you are a fitness freak.. Walking up 1000 ft of steep slope can be quite daunting . There's an artificial lake near ski slopes.
Joshimath town is 13 km away and about 2000 ft below Auli. Trolley bus..a ropeway which carries 25 people and luggage connects Auli sking slope to Joshimath( Rs 700return). It's only useful as a transportation if one is travelling to and from joshimath or staying at clifftop resort near ski slopes. Since other hotels are below ski slopes one needs to take a chairlift from tower 8 trolley bus station to go down. Carrying luggage is not possible on chairlifts. Also climbing upto tower 8 trolley bus station through perforated metal stair cases could be dizzying for ones with vertigo or poor health. One would also need porter to carry luggage. Main station of trolley bus is also 500 m steep walk from ski slope chair lift station. Be prepared for some huffing and puffing either ways. For tourists staying in resorts below ski slope it's advisable to take a taxi from Joshimath unless you are already travelling in one. The road from Joshimath to Auli is beautiful. We took one way trolley bus ride to Joshimath for fun..its a thrilling ride where the ropeway plunges 3000 ft in 4 km. We came up to resort by car. If one is planning to take one way ride on either trolley bus or chair lift a return ticket can be used for one-way travel for two people. Hard luck for single or odd numbered tourists though.
One must either trek or take a mule ride to Gorson bugyal at 12000ft above Auli , one of the eight meadows of garhwal . It has surrounding and uninterrupted view of snowcapped peaks. One can spend time walking around few kms of undulating meadow. It's an 1.5 km trek from ski slope chair lift station and 4 km from resorts below ski slopes. Fairly easy trail, not dangerous...walking is not easy though beacause of steep inclines and rarified oxygen. Mule ride is good option ( RS 500 for 4/5 hours), the handler is also the guide. Do carry enough water and dry snacks as nothing is available in Gorson. Do carry some warm clothing even if you feeling warm as weather can change suddenly.Chattratal a small fresh water lake amidst dense forest is short deviation from Gorson trek.. We were disappointed as during summers there was very little water. Guide is required if one is including chattratal in trek as one can get lost in deep forests. It's usually part of mule trek but avoidable as it reduces time in meadows. In mountains every clear weather moment is precious for the view as peaks keep playing hide and seek. We had a great time just walking and sitting in meadows for couple of hours and enjoying the view .It makes one feel at the top of the world. Must do while in Auli.
There is one small shop in Auli GMVN premise selling biscuits tetrapack milk water soft drink etc. Few shops in ski slope selling biscuits soft drink water etc. No restaurants in ski slope including Gmvn one was functional. Even the one at clifftop resort was unresponsive. There are couple of shacks that serve Maggi and soup and eggs tea etc. Very expensive. Few shops enroute Auli from Joshimath. Nearest chemist in Joshimath.
Nearest ATM is at the ITBP campus 6 km from Gmvn. All transactions even in resorts in Auli are by cash.

Auli in winters is great. Do take a cable car 750₹ pp to and fro, if possible stay at clifftop , second choice gmvn ski resort acc to budget. Chair car fare ₹300pp to and fro.gum boots or snow boots available at all levels at ₹100 pp per day. Clifftop and nandadevi gmvn resort are at highest level, near artificial lake. To go to gmvn ski resort one will need to take chair car after cable car. To carry luggage porters are available around₹100. Auli ski resort can be reached by road also but clifftop only by cable car. Local ski guides charge ₹5-600 for 1-2 hrs. But Gmvn instructors(highly qualified) charge 1300 for child and 1600₹ for adult for 2-3 hrs. Snow sledge can be enjoyed at ₹100pp. Or snow tyre at ₹50 pp. At parking area outside gmvn ski resort locals offer camping for ₹1000 pp with dinner camp fire and breakfast along with drop and pick up. Book cable car tickets as early as possible. People come at 7-8 am to be in line. It's written that video is not allowed but each and everyone makes it. No one objects. Those staying in resorts above can carry luggage. No one objects. Luggage is sent free in both cable car and chair car. But the road from Haridwar to joshimath is in such a bad shape that if possible wait for its construction to complete.

Ropeway operates from Joshimath to Auli and the only option to reach Auli stay during winters when the roads are closed during heavy snowfall. The ride is very comfortable and smooth. To and fro ticket cost Rs.750 per head. If you have booked your stay in GMVNL (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam Ltd.) Auli you will have to get down at Tower no.8. Climb down 66 steps if the escalator are not working. There are porters waiting to carry your luggage for Rs.100 per suitcase one way uptill your room.
You will have to walk few steps in the snow to reach the chairlift that operates from Tower 8 to GMVNL room, no charges for this ropeway.
Suggest to give the luggage to the potters because it is very difficult to climb down the steep stairs with the heavy luggage. Second suggestion this place it is not idle for senior citizens during winter.

Auli is situated in the tranquility of nature and one gets the best out of the tour, when they stay in auli itself instead of joshimath.there are many hotels/home stays in joshimath claiming to be situated in auli. In reality joshimath is situated below auli and it is actually the market place. One should stay in auli and feel it’s snow capped mountains/ lush green meadows and rope ways. There are other places also nearby to visit from auli like Badrinath and valley of flowers(depends on the time of year you are visiting). The best place to stay in auli is GMVN property in Auli. They are quite hospitable, professional and helpful. Rooms are good and you get a direct boarding point for the ropeway from here.

One of the most hectic travels we had till date is the one to Auli. The majestic garhwal makes you feel so insignificant that it melts your ego in no time; the beauty of kumaon makes you feel how lucky you are to get to see it in real. We started from Bangalore on the 1st of jan 2010. The feel of actual journey started from delhi on the innova we hired. We reached Rishikesh by 6pm, the temperature was about 8.The next day morning we left rishikesh to auli. The route we took was rudraprayag, karnaprayag, Chamoli, Joshimath then Auli. I think once u pass Chamoli you have many views of the snow peaks. Our driver Aravind was a bit rough on the wheels or it might be the untamed roads of garhwal that makes you think so. we passed many villages and most of the time the river Ganges was beside us, different names though. The best part of this journey was that you get to witness the different colors and moods of the river Ganga merge to a new branch each time supporting new settlements on its banks. We reached Joshimath by 3, narrow roads and old looking shops and tea stalls. Once we started the climb to Auli our driver told us that the snow fall looks very less, almost nil. I had already been in terms with the fact as the journey itself was more that what i expected. Our driver left us till the limit where vehicles were allowed. We walked from there to our resort 'cliff top'. We reached the resort which is on the slopes, just before the sunset. I had read in the reviews of Auli that you should be very lucky to have fresh snow at the slopes. The slopes were almost like barren land, my wife was a bit disappointed. The beauty of Himalayan peaks was beyond words. The sunset the best. Tired to the bone. Don’t even remember the night the sleep was sound and deep. The next day we trekked to gorsen. The first step on snow was on our way. The snow was not fresh but a few weeks old, but then it started to snow slowly. we were all exited, the snowflakes touching your nose was something new for all of us. There was an army camp at the top. My son was shivering inside his jacket, the army men took him to the warmth of the kitchen. On our way back it was still snowing. We reached our room before it was too late. I couldn’t sleep that night. I was too exited like a kid, it was snowing like hell. I was the first to wake up and get out of the resort, it was a white carpet spread along the land and the roofs. The first glimpse of sun shine across the Nanda devi peak. It was heaven on earth. We really had a good time. The view was mesmerizing. All the effort was worth. The cable car to Joshimath was not operational. We had to vacate the room. The road was closed, our only option was to trek down the slopes to a place where our driver can pick us. We started the next day morning. The resort gave us two Sherpa’s who helped us with our luggage and our kid. The snow was your knee deep. The clear blue sky sinking into the white landscape was something i have never ever seen. We crossed few army camps. It was almost 4pm when we reached our vehicle. All exhausted and exited we drove to chamoli checked in to a small motel in the valley. Getting ready to embrace the beauty of kumaon.

> Visited Auli in Nov - 2018 from Delhi via Road.
> Delhi-Ghaziabad-Modi Nagar-Meerut-Khatauli-Muzaffarnagar-Roorkee-Haridwar-Rishikesh (took total 7 hr, Via Bus from Delhi depends on road traffic)
> From Rishikesh booked a private cab for Joshimath, it was a total 7.5 - 8-hour journey as construction work going on most part of the road (Only 4-5 restaurant was running their, too much rush and food quality just on average) Luckily found a good hotel for stay (300 per room)
