Us 4 friends now in our 40s went for a trip to Auli, known as Switzerland of India or mini switzerland in the third week of January.
Our main objective was to experience snow fall which was a sure thing in Jan. We had booked in Hilltop skiing resort Auli. There are only 2 resorts there, the other being govt run, but comparatively newer. This resort was 10 years old showing its age.
We travelled from Delhi to Auli by a rented car. Usually the base station of Auli is Joshimath. We get a ropeway from Joshimath to Auli hilltop and the resorts are near the 8th pole of the Ropeway. But for us because of the "reseeding land problem" in Joshimath and the first pillar being affected the ropeway was not function. But there is a well maintained tar road from Joshimath to the hill bas of Auli which is around 10km long. From there you have to either take a 4*4 SUV or there is chaircar to the hill top. There is GMVN( uttarachand govt run for tourism promotion ) office from where the Chair car goes uphill. A ticket of Rs500 is there for to and fro travel per person. So we took the chair car uphill which travels a distance of ≤ 1km. The temperature was -2 at the time of our arrival which fell to -9 at night.
When we reached Auli, it had one small episode of snowfall 2 days before. But we could see the bear hills all around the hotel. Breath taking view it was, but we didn't know that was the least you get.
The Next day we had a trekking trip to 360 degree point up hill. Called so because of the 360° view of himalayas you get. And we had a skiing training of sort for 1 hour near the place. Next day we trekked to RR point through the jungle. It had an Army camp earlier which had been abandoned.
On the second night we had not good snowfall which we found out about when we got up the next day. It was a beautiful site, the whole area covered in snow. That day we planned a mule ride half way up 360°, as we were planning for a longer trek that day past 360. We walked a few more kms up the mountain and had many photo breaks. On the way back we took a different path through the jungle where we found a frozen water body. But on the last night of our stay it started snowing heavily. When we got up it was snowing. We had planned an early morning check out, but it was delayed because of the snow situation and the chair car started functioning late. After reaching GMVN we had to take a Jimny with studded tyres as no other car was able to move in on foot deep snow. All in all it was an experience of life which we are never going to forget

Its a magical place .We went in July end right midst of the monsoon. It was all green, misty slightly cold but breath taking. The Himalayan range around in mesmerizing and humbling. The road leading to Auli passes through narrow road, cantonment and forest road. You may even glimpse the monal if you are lucky like us.The valley is blooming in this season and you see variety of wild and cultivated flowers(perlude to our valley of flowers trek)
This place needs to be seen to be believed

Auli- snow, cold, sking, cablecar, hiking, majestic views, thrill rides, horse ride, minus temperature....all that one is looking from a hill station. Planning in advance is the key to this superb location. Mind it thr road from Joshimath to Auli is only for brave and experts

Skiing in the snow is a unique experience. There's a trekking route to go up the mountains, amidst the fresh deep snow. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be in the middle of mountains, surrounded by pure snow on all directions.

I did the 7 day non-certificate skiing course from GMVNL at Auli in Jan, 2019. I want to provide my candid review:

a) Skiing Slope - Excellent (Best one i have ever experienced in India) 5/5
b) Training by GMVNL Skiing Coach - Excellent (Coach are very experienced and dedicated) 5/5
c) Accommodation Facility - Excellent (I was provided one independent Room with attached toilet and heater) 5/5
d) Skiing Equipment - Excellent (Ski and shoes were in very condition) 5/5
e) Ski Lift Facility - Good (The ski lift developed snag after Day 1 and could not be repaired till last day; GMVNL provided chair lift on last days) 4/5 - Scope to improve the lead time to repair the Ski Lift
f) Food at GMVNL - Excellent (Homely food and very punctual) -5/5
g) Staff behaviour - Excellent (The staff is very friendly and co-operative) - 5/5

Overall, i was very satisfied with the GMVNL Skiing course at Auli.
I have following recommendations:
a) Reduce the turnaround time to repair Ski lift by preparing some spare parts and technician
b) Please advertise about the course more to get more participants

Note: My batch had hardly 3-4 person from outside in addition to the local batch of 10 person.

I plan to go again at GMVNL Auli for skiing course.

I visited on 28th Dec. The weather was perfect. There is a ropeway from Joshimath to Auli, which is 14kms. There are only 300 tickets per day sold costing ₹1000 pp, for which people stand in d Q from 3am. So, wud b better to take the car to the top, only challenge are d narrow roads & army trucks blocking d way. Once u reach d top, u May choose to stay there(expensive) or stay in Joshimath. The view is spectacular, u can c d Himalayas & d highest peak Nanda devi. To buy d ticket , u hv to climb 35-40 steps. There is a Chair lift from 8-5pm, the cost is ₹1000 both ways. U cud take 1 way & return trekking down or use d tubes, where d local guys will help & charge ₹300-400, it’s fun to try that. U cud also try skying.
