We have wanted for years to explore this road, and finally did so recently. Choose a day with good weather so you get to enjoy the lovely views. The road is not always gentle - beware, cyclists! There are some very steep sections, and many...More

OK, so it’s definitely not a highway, it’s not a secret, and if you google it you’ll soon find out it’s not the Gentle Annie of the South Island’s West Coast. Right, so what is it then? Leaving Taihape north on SH1 there’s a small...More

A lovely drive between Napier and Tiahape. The road is in great condition and little traffic. Great rural and bush views. You travel past some of the more notable North Island sheep stations - really interesting.

We loved driving the Gentle Annie towards Napier. It has beautiful views and few traffic. We stopped at the suspension bridge to spend the night next to the river. Loved it. If you’re nervous about driving your campervan here (like I was): don’t be. It’s...More

Fanastic drive from Napier to Taihape. Got down to 4 degrees, amazing Kaweka section, great native grasses, big open valley's, loved it. Take your time and enjoy the topography all the way.

What a wonderful drive - a land of contrast. Be prepared for steep grades, and winding road - along with wonderful pastrol scenery, rugged bush covered ranges (Kawekas) - the creeks, rivers, birdsong. Some nice areas to stop for picnics and yes- there are a...More

there are few true kiwi icon roads, and the gentle Annie is one of them. It's lost a lot in being sealed the whole way now, but that's opened it up to a whole new generation of less adventurous travelers. But beware and remember, there...More

Despite it's reputation, this is an easy drive, though not one to take in a hurry. It twists and turns continuously, so needs to be taken at a leisurely pace. The road is sealed all the way and is well maintained. We encountered very few...More

Cycled this road over 2 days. There is a great description of the route in the book Classic NZ Cycle Trails by cycling gurus the Kennett brothers. The scenery is fantastic with rolling hills, bush, rivers and more. The hills are brutal and numerous but...More

The road has some high and narrow spots. If you are very nervous I wouldn't do it. Personally I think it has been ruined since it was sealed, Has taken the excitement out of it!
