for a long time I have always wanted to drive the Gentle Annie from Taihape to Napier. Best choice I ever made was to travel this route in our new toy, a Mazda MX5 on a perfect day with the top down it was absolutely...More

We enjoyed the drive over the Gentle Annies; see lovely NZ nature in the natural back country setting - but warning - if you are in an old vehicle make sure you carry water, as it is a long steep slope and you can boil...More

Scenery, tick. Good condition Road? well mostly, the surface metal and tar runing down hill without a push is a bit of a concern, granted that time(been over the GA a few times now, can't go past it) the day was a scorcher, but still, it...More

Loved the scenery, from mountains and rangers with snow, to cattle and sheep farms, even some lambs. Then through forestry, and down onto the rolling hills of Hawkes Bay.

We have wanted for years to explore this road, and finally did so recently. Choose a day with good weather so you get to enjoy the lovely views. The road is not always gentle - beware, cyclists! There are some very steep sections, and many...More

OK, so it’s definitely not a highway, it’s not a secret, and if you google it you’ll soon find out it’s not the Gentle Annie of the South Island’s West Coast. Right, so what is it then? Leaving Taihape north on SH1 there’s a small...More

A lovely drive between Napier and Tiahape. The road is in great condition and little traffic. Great rural and bush views. You travel past some of the more notable North Island sheep stations - really interesting.

We loved driving the Gentle Annie towards Napier. It has beautiful views and few traffic. We stopped at the suspension bridge to spend the night next to the river. Loved it. If you’re nervous about driving your campervan here (like I was): don’t be. It’s...More

Fanastic drive from Napier to Taihape. Got down to 4 degrees, amazing Kaweka section, great native grasses, big open valley's, loved it. Take your time and enjoy the topography all the way.

The road has some high and narrow spots. If you are very nervous I wouldn't do it. Personally I think it has been ruined since it was sealed, Has taken the excitement out of it!
