About

The pontifical Carthusian monastery of the Val-de-Bénédiction was founded in the 14th century by Pope Innocent VI. The frescoes of the Saint John Baptist's Chapel were painted by Matteo Giovanetti, who created the frescoes in Avignon Palace. The three cloisters, surrounded by forty cells and gardens, made it one of the largest Carthusian monstery in France.

Step back in time
Lots to see and the self guided pamphlets are great in describing the history of this monastery. The digital room gives you a look back in time as it would have looked like many years ago. A relaxing morning and a great coffee and cake at the end with a quick stop at the cafe

Sprawling magnificent history
Well worth setting aside an hour or two to visit this former monastery/cathedral of the Carthusian order. We enjoyed an uncrowded stroll through the halls and rooms - great photography potential! Ooozing with history and easily accessible - hardly any stairs.

Interesting visit
We came on this site by chance and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. There is a literature centre on the site and it is not immediately obvious that you can do a tour. It is an old monastery with lots to see and a garden to rest in. Well worth a visit. it is easily accessible by bus from Avignon. The nearest stop is Parking Chartreuse. not very well sign posted

Step back in time

Cheap coffee shop

Great visit, we bought tickets for this along with the tickets for fort saint andre. 9 euros for both. Great to walk around and discover and a very nice, cheap coffee shop inside to stop for a rest at the end of the visit.

Wonderful calm after Avignon madness

Just a short walk over the bridge (no buses running on a Sunday...) villeneuve is a welcome break from the madness of Avignon, especially at festival time. I can't imagine anywhere more calm and tranquil than these beautiful buildings and gardens. I had the place almost to myself and came away feeling rejuvenated. There is some information in different languages around the site and a cafe and restaurant. Definitely worth a trip over the river - and bonus great views of Avignon on the journey back.

A beautiful refuge!

We weren't really sure what to expect of the Chartreuse monastery. However, just walking into the Allee' des Muriers, made us immediately aware that we were entering an other worldly place. The monastery draws one in with it's gardens, frescoes, cloisters and courtyards as you walk through one ancient door after another. Some of the monk's cells (open for public viewing) help to enlighten visitors to the solice and meditation of the lives once lived within these walls.

A gem of a restaurant

Highly recommend the restaurant inside the monastery. It's charming; and the food is tasty and ginormous portions. The staff was friendly and helpful.

An unexpected stunner

From the street you do not expect the size, beauty or depth of this place where you can wander about on both levels. Incredible. Tip: Don't miss, and it's easy to do so, the brief movie on how they are creating a 3D virtual replica of the Pont d' Avignon. It is near the entrance to l'eglise.

Not all Charteuses are cold and gloomy

Touted as the largest Chartreuse in France, this one is located just a few minutes outside Avignon, right next to the ominous Fort Saint-André.

One of the monks' cells has been restored so visitors get a sense of the daily life in the monastery. No prison-like cells here: this was the richest of Charteuses, each monk living in a 3-room appartment, with a view on an adjacent garden.

The common areas are beautifully preserved and a testimony to architectural styles ranging from the 13th to the 17th century.

There were very few visitors when we visited, but I would think that during high-season the place might be vrawling with tourists. As the visit is very peaceful and solemn, you may not want to bring younger children along if they have trouble keeping relatively quiet for an hour or two.
