This this very pleasant Alsatian village is certainly worth going to.
Be mindful that it's very popular and it may be difficult to get part at times. I had to do a bit of a drive around the Suburbs in order to find somewhere to leave my car.
But worth it, lots of nice shops, good place to go at Christmas time.

Picturesque would be an understatement. It’s a fairy tale village that doesn’t seem real. In addition to the beautiful architecture, you can taste wine at what seemed to be dozens of tasting rooms. You only need a couple hours here and it is well worth it for the photos alone. I had always heard Colmar had the fairy tale look but it can’t hold a candle to Riquewihr.

It is a very interesting and spectacular small town, with a great atmosphere. The many colored houses, restored to their original condition, are charming. Many small cafes, restaurants, gift shops, large parking lot nearby. Great place for a nice afternoon trip.

an absolute MUST DO. You can hardly get enough of these colors. In addition, this historic ambience, transported back to an ancient time. And yet this modernity: studios, art, trade. Yes, also the usual things that tourism demands, but beyond that too. Of course, I get all kinds of wines, sausages, cheese, pastries here. Special mention must be made of the permanent Christmas market.
This city is the most beautiful in Alsace.

Beautiful Alsace village with cobbled narrow streets. Beautiful medieaval coloured buildings.
However it is a very popular tourist destination, so expect it to be busy. Parking can also be difficult as cars are obviously not allowed into the old town
Plenty of bars, restaurants, cafés, glassware and craft type shops.
Well worth a visit

The one, single, main street of the inner city represents everything you need to see on the whole area 200km around. Typical houses, typical restaurants and typical city walls.
There are a lot of car parks around, although for a small fee.

Although cities of Strasbourg and Colmar in the region of Alsace are very beautiful, there is in my opinion no more authentic Alsatian village as it is Riquewihr which simply reflects all of the Alsatian magic in the best way. Village itself is embraced with vineyards (therefore you can try many types of vine in some winstubs there) and also some houses have parts of vine leafs on them. Village is nearly historically untouchable on the hill and when you walk around it, you still think that you are like in the 15th or 16th century Alsace. Practically nearly all houses are timber-framed with German tradition as it is typical also for Alsace (and would be also in some German cities if they would survive the World War II with architecture). You can also hear some Alsatian dialect of the German language on streets, although the majority of people in village are tourists (as village has only above 1000 residents). There are many souvenir shops and traditional old restaurants, some narrow streets and, above the all, village walls with medieval Dolder tower. I had a great time there and will surely return there at least once in my lifetime. It is simply history and Alsace in their best.

Medieval village, with a remarkable architectural heritage, located in between of vineyards producing renowned wines, a must-see step on the “Route des Vins d’Alsace” (Alsace wines route) and on the “Sentier viticole des Grands Crus” (Grands Crus’ wines trail).
Classified in the list of “Les plus beaux villages de France” (the most beautiful France villages), it’s characterized by a great number of “maisons à colombage” (half-timbering houses), distributed almost everywhere inside the village.
The local tourism office renders available, further to several other brochures, a leaflet that, together with a plan of the village, lists all most interesting sites to be seen.
Following what the leaflet recommends, you’ll go through the main road, that cross Riquewihr along its whole length, making then some deviations into the lateral alleys, showing very enchanting hidden glimpses.
Really particular is the Dolder tower, that was the entry gateway to Riquewihr, and was hosting the village guardian and his family; it shows two completely different facades. The inner one, looking to the village centre, is partially made in stone, and shows a artistic half-timbering portion and a time-giving clock; outside, the tower has a severe fortified look, which purpose was to impress whoever was approaching the village with bellicose instinct.
From Dolder tower, a first surrounding wall starts, on top of which many houses have been built; a second town wall is still partially visible on the outer side, with a further entry gateway, reachable in the past through a drawbridge.
The main road shows a sequence of half-timbering houses, some very particular, which timbers are minutely and wisely notched, with a lot of coloured flowers, climbing plants, elaborate wrought-iron signs, sometimes walls with intense colours.
The houses host plenty of small hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops of any kind.
Nevertheless, somewhere you’ll see some house entirely realized in stonework; this means that the owners were well-off, since they have been in the position to build the house, without being forced to use wood, that was much cheaper than stone.
Riquewihr is almost always invaded by a multitude of tourists, arriving with coach even from nearby Germany; due to that, somebody could evaluate the village as artificial and commercial. We have luckily had the way to enjoy it almost empty, together with just a few pedestrian that, like we did, were enjoying a relaxing walk; in such a way, I believe, we got its appeal and real essence.
I conclude with some recommendation concerning board and lodging: we stayed at the B&B Aux Treilles (Chambres Kohler), just a short walk from the village centre; definitely a perfect stay.
Some restaurants we tried for dinner, all with good quality: Au Trotthus, la Grappe d’Or, D’Brendel Stub; to limit the expenses, address your attention to the available set menu.

If you ‘ll visit Riquewhir by car,I recommend the parking lot which locates
just front of the entrance arch (Mairie & City Hall ) on Ave Mequillet (street).
Around 150 car spaces are there.
If you approach the gate of the parking lot (very close to a bar) ,then a camera recognizes your license number of your car automatically.( There is no ticket vendor there at the gate.) You can leave your car without any other procedures. When you come back , you pay the charge by inputting your license number onto the vending machine. You ‘ll get a small receipt. After that you can go through the exit gate . The gate opens no sooner than your car reaches the gate.( a camera will recognize you as well.)

Please recommend where to park outside the village, to then walk around, ideally in a free or inexpensive area.
Thanks.

I have to leave from Colmar Station at 12pm tomorrow back to France. Is it possible to go to Riquewihr before then and leave on time?
Written 27 January 2018
It’s a half hour drive and you need a taxi to take you there early in the morning and do only a short visit. You may have to ask the taxi to wait for you while you visit and safe time.

How do I get to Riquewirh from Strasbourg. I don't want to rent a car. Is there a train or a Bus from Colmar
Written 11 October 2017
Colmar definitely nearer
There are tours to all of the villages organised through the local hotels. Another option as is s cab from Colmar.
Agree a price beforehand as they are pricey in France and not plentiful

The macroon shop at the beginning of the hill seems to be part of the restaurant called "Relais de Riquewihr" since they aer connected, if we talk about the same shop. There is a very friendly man offering free samples of his delicious macroons. But this shop is actually on the right side when walking up the hill, quite at the beginning, only about 100 meters distant from the city hall.

Hi Roberto, there are many beautifull villages in Alsace. We visited Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé, Hunawihr, Bergheim, Otrott with Monte Saint Odile and Obernai. Don't forget Chateau du Haut-Koenigsbourg in Orschiwiller and Colmar and Estrasbourg, the principal cities. I hope you enjoy.
