You might be forgiven for thinking that you are approaching another beautiful Thai Buddhist temple. The architecture, the Buddha statues, the view over the plain below ... it's lovely.
But its uniqueness resides in the main hall where there are some remarkable modern wall paintings. The central figure in each is a naked man, not Buddha, and he is depicted in prayerful poses combating the temptations of earth. They are beautiful and well worth a visit/

Arrived at the foot of a staircase exactly 1730hrs, had no clue what to expect so climbed 1st staircase. Beautiful Wat, monks, shrines and entire surroundings were glorious and serene. Respectfully wandered about admiringly until we reached the back and saw large Buddha up another staircase which at this stage we were not wanting to climb. It was so hot and humid with no air but we did climb.
You can truly appreciate the mastercraftsmen and tradesman whom built these massive structures. The whole site is incredible. The views and the scenery are spectacular.
My husband and I were the only ones there apart from from a local woman and her young daughter in prayer. They left very soon after we arrived and it was a lonely feeling to be the only 2 people around the blessed site. Very peaceful and serene.
... however, whay most probably do not know that behind the huge Buddha statue atop the stairs is a path that leads on and on. There are structures that get higher and bigger. The skywalk is also there as is Buddha's footprint and finally a large gold shrine. Buddhas footprint interior is still being completed with its gilded motifs and decorative paneling. We were blessed to be able to enter and the artists show us around. He said to date, its been 5 months of interior work; amazing.
The views are 360° in some places. Spectacular!

My weekday visit was peaceful and relaxing, as I was one of only a handful of visitors. Steps lead to a temple whose walls are decorated with modern art rarely seen in temples in Thailand. There is a 10-metre-high gold-coloured statue. You can enter the white chedi and see the golden chedi within. The wat is situated on a mountain, so offers impressive views. The grounds also house a line of boards depicting amusing Thai idioms translated into English.

Getting to Doi Saket was an adventure - luckily our driver Aa was skilled and patient. The road was clogged with cyclists, joggers, pedestrians, scooters and cars meandering between lanes. But the trip was worth it. Even though the sky was overcast, we had great views of the Chiang Mai skyline.
The sacred spaces were magnificent. The funicular up the hill to the temples coast 30 baht (about $1). Unless you are very fit and don't mind climbing/descending in the stifling heat, forget taking the hundreds of stairs.
What a tribute to man's ingenuity and religious commitment. Although there were lots of people, it didn't feel crowded. Unlike some other holy places we've visited in other countries, the mainly Thai visitors were quiet and respectful.
I figured out why so many people wore socks - you walk around most of the time without shoes, so if you don't want your bare feet exposed to random stuff on the ground, cover them up!

An interesting temple about 40 minutes north-east of Chiang Mai. Situated on a hill above Doi Saket village, this temple contains a set of beautiful paintings executed by the same Thai artist who designed the famous White Temple at Chiang Rai. I'm not sure what all of them depict, but they are certainly food for thought ...
You can walk up a "naga staircase" but our songthaew driver took us to the temple itself - the road up the hill from the village is not particularly steep or long - and the trip from Chiang Mai to Doi Saket costs 40 THB each way. Pick up a songthaew behind the Chiang Mai riverside flower market - locals will show you the exact location.
Illustrated boards in the grounds - not on the same artistic level as the paintings - are very amusing and depict Thai/Buddhist idioms.
A small coffee shop on the grounds near the entrance is run by very efficient and friendly staff, and the coffee is extremely good.
No entrance fee, and parking available. Very few other visitors.
A good place for an excursion to get some fresh air in Chiang Mai's smoky/burning season, and can easily be combined with a trip to the nearby Tweechol Botanic Gardens (where swimming is available in a beautiful pool for a very small fee), or with visits to other local attractions.

Beautiful temple high above with very few people. Walk around the large grounds and view the valley below. Try to go when it is not smoky season as the view is impaired

The trip to Wat Phra That Doi Saket is a nice half day trip to a country temple which is less touristy and compared to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep you get free parking and free entrance with wonderful local people around. There is no mass tourism here unless it is a buddhist holiday and lots of worshippers come to the temple. Unlike at many other temples here you can actually walk inside the Pagoda itself. I usually hire a car with a driver or rent a motorbilke to get to the temple east of Chiang Mai. Combining the visit of the temple with a tour through the villages or go through the backroads to San Kamphaeng can turn into a really nice and quiet day trip.

The temple grounds and artifacts are beautiful and beautifully maintained. However, we really enjoyed buying food at the central market and giving alms to the monks at sunrise in nearby Doi Saket. If possible, it's worth getting up early and combine alms giving with a tour of the temple. You can either walk up a few hundred steps to the front or drive around to the back of the temple. Either way, it's worth a look.

A temple that is away from the town centre is a place of serenity. You can also explore the sky walk and look at Chiang Mai from the distance.
