There are many Medici Villas scattered across Tuscany: this is one of the least scenically located, stuck in the not particularly attractive town of Poggio a Caiano. The gardens surrounding the house were pleasant with some welcome spring colour, but nothing special. It's possible to see inside the house (for free) but you need to book a tour in advance. We enjoyed wandering around the rooms, which are decorated in a variety of styles reflecting different phases of the building's long history.

We visited the interiors of the Medici Villa in Poggio a Caiano on Sunday on the occasion of the free opening of the Museums.
Very interesting tour also thanks to the guide who was able to illustrate, with competence and sagacity, the beauty of the rooms of this summer residence of the Medici.
The garden is extraordinarily simple but you will fall in love with it for its care and centuries-old trees.
Absolutely worth visiting

Beautiful places and structure but the gentleman who accompanied us (young) continually urged us to leave the rooms and didn't say a single word to us. Caretaker and not guide? So why does it say "guided tour" on the site? The usual public employee who is in the wrong job? Normally we study, but not this time, and he made sure to make us not appreciate the villa at all. Very disappointed children. A beautiful public good treated very badly. There was a lady but unfortunately she wasn't the one accompanying us. Maybe it depends on who you find? Shameful and unacceptable

Attention: the back part of the park is currently closed. You can only see the side part. To visit, you just call and make an appointment every half hour. Then you are let in at the entrance and simply accompanied through the numerous lavishly furnished rooms.
The royal house of Savoy used and furnished the villa in the 19th century. The billiard room is interesting. But the "original" wall paintings are more beautiful, as far as they have been preserved. The Medici family tree is fascinating in the frieze room (the original is probably no longer hanging in the entrance and is on display inside). A huge clan.
Entry is free, the guides are friendly and happy to give information.
Across the street is a bar with delicious ice cream and doughnuts, which you can treat yourself to afterwards as a reward.
And compared to Florence, simply unmatched: the wonderful peace and quiet. At 2.30 p.m. there were 4 other people there besides us. Wonderful!

We tried unsuccessfully to see the villa in 2020. So am glad we got to see it this year. The gardens were not what I expected, a little disappointing, but the house lived up to all of my imaginings. The tour guides were amazing, insightful and opinionated which I appreciated. The only thing is, don’t tip them, we tried, they can’t take the money and it is very awkward!

Beautiful Medici villa beautifully frescoed with original furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Napoleon's sister and the Savoy family stayed here. There is also an app available for the visit which we did not use because there is a guided tour every hour. Parking near the villa is free and at payment. The park cannot be visited in its entirety, there are renovation works. You must book the time of the visit.

My husband and I were riding through the area on a Vespa and saw the villa from the road. We didn’t have a reservation for a tour but Matteo kindly accepted us anyway! Matteo gave us a beautiful, personal tour and wine tasting. He is very knowledgeable, fun, and answered all of our questions with ease! We left feeling like we got a true Tuscan winery experience thanks to him. 10/10, definitely recommend.

Beautiful villa with uniquely painted areas. A sister of Napoleon, several Medici and King Victor Emmanuel slept there.
The theater hall from the 19th century is fantastic. The great hall was beautifully painted. We watched everything with our mouths open. Much nicer than we expected and it was very quiet. Something so beautiful deserves more visitors. Did I mention it was free?

A beautiful villa built by the Medici through several generations. It is fascinating to see how the tastes of the various members of the family change, but they still have the urge to collect. Don't miss it if you are interested in art and history. Only a half hour bus ride from Florence.
On the practical side, please note that the instructions are clearly stated in English at the entrance, but when they start explaining that you need a reservation, it gets a bit confusing, so I'll share what I learned. There are two escorted tours (silent tours). One is for the interior of the villa and it starts on the half hour. No reservation needed
The other tour is for an art exhibition of Natura Morta collected by several of the Medici and it starts every hour on the hour. Only for this tour you have to make a reservation at the entrance. If you arrive in between those hours, as we did, walk around a little bit but make sure you stand at the door of the villa exactly on the hour or on the half hour depending which of the two tours you want to take. We enjoyed both tours.
This is really worth your time and inexpensive since the entrance is free and the bus ride was about 2 euros.

This is a truly spectacular piece of architecture; its proportions (grand and grandiose as they are) are perfect; the prospect is wonderful; the light in many of the rooms on the piano nobile is remarkable. Thouigh the windows were mostly closed on our visit, one can imagine that the building takes full advantages of prevailing breezes and the path of the sun. I found the guide to be very helpful, once she unlocked her very good English after a much less satisfying conversation with me in my Italian. The frecoes in the main hall (the one with the Leo X "stemme") are quite wonderful, if restored and probably over-painted. Their classical scenes allude to cognate aspects of Lorenzo's remarkable life. One room contains glazed terracotta figures from the pediment. They are especially worth attention, particularly the images of bees and beehives--quite out of place with the other more "antique" images, but they reflect Lorenzo's passion for nature and gardening (and perhaps also some of his hopes for an orderly and productive state). It would seem that just about everything that has happened to the villa since Lorenzo and Leo and their immediate heirs (with the possible exception of the trellis frescoes in the billiard room) has been a form of desecration. The 19th C occupants--whose taste is still on display--represent the most egregious contributors to this deterioration. But the curators--perhaps out of conviction, but more probably because there is a shortage of funds to do much else--have left this as it was when occupied by various now largely forgotten monarchs. It would be wonderful to see this building "taken back", cleansed of the remnants of bad taste and made whole, you could say, with its lovely setting. A walk in that setting, in the gardens and woods gives many great views of the villa along with a convincing sense of why this was reputedly Lorenzo's favorite "home." If you are lucky, that walk will also lead you to encounter a most alluring, entertaining, slightly surly, but amazingly acrobatic cat, one of many felines who now get to live where Lorenzo once did.
