I have visited this temple a couple of times. This temple was built by King Valagaba, and it has a cave that was built those days but can not be exploratory at present. Ghis temple has a statue that is not completed fully due to a couple of reasons and those are written near the statue. If you are local or foreigner you definitely need to visit this place since you don't need to spend extra effort to visit this place since its near by main road

It is believed that the temple bears a history dating back to about 2,000 years. Historically, the Dhowa temple was known as the Kumbaltissa Ariyagala Vehera, named after its chief priest who had provided sanctuary for King Walagamba, who turned the cave into a temple.
Work at the temple was not completed during the reign of King Walagamba, but was fully completed during the Kandyan Kingdom.

I reached this place from Bandarawela town. It is situated in Badulla Bandarawela road. You can see halfly made Budda stone carving inside of this temple. King Walagamba had made it, actually while he was making it enemies came to catch him. So he couldn’t finish it. when you go there still you can find that halfly made statue. Later someone had completed it. but you can see old one too. There is a cave and tunnel. But cant enter to the tunnel. It is closed. People say that tunnel is going towards Ravana falls. People believe that king Walagamba had escaped from this tunnel. Easily reach to this place by public transport too.

This temple was not recommended to us when we planned our trip but I can honestly say it was well worth the detour. It feels more intimate than some of the grander temples like the magnificent Temple of the Tooth. There is a huge Buddha carved into the rock outside, although it is very worn away now. Sources say that it was carved by King Walagamba himself but he never completed it. Inside the temple itself I loved the very colourful and detailed paintings and the numerous Buddhas including a huge golden reclining Buddha. A tunnel runs off, in which I believe King Walagamba hid from his enemies and it was reputed to be guarded by a huge, silver snake. Well worth a visit.

This is a steep climb to the top. It is 2000 years old and the art work inside is glorious. Be carful of the gang of monkeys that still bottles and food on the way up.

I had arrived at my guest house late afternoon and after being on the train for most of the day i decided to walk the 4 kms to Dhowa Rock temple. The road was quite busy with traffic and i arrived at the temple at 5 pm and nobody else seemed to be around. I went down some steps and there was a lovely little temple at the bottom next to the river. One solitary man was praying. There is a large unfinished Buddha carving the rockface, and this is what makes the temple famous. The temple is over 2000 years old. Although this is listed under Badulla which is about 20 kms away i hikedd the few kms from Ella which is much nearer
