About
Centuries ago, the sundial above the Mauterndorf castle gate greeted merchants, scoundrels and travelers on their way through the Lungau region. The portal where passing traders once heard the words: “Open your bag and pay the toll” is now the gate leading visitors right back to Middle Ages. Our opening hours: Winter: January 2 - 30 (Tue, Thur) 10.00 am - 6.00 pm February 3 - 28 (Mon - Fri) 10.00 am - 6.00 pm March 3 - April 2 (Tue, Thur) 10.00 am - 6.00 pm April 6 - 14 (daily) 10.00 am - 6.00 pm Summer: May 1 - October 31 (daily) May, June, September, October 10.00 am - 6.00 pm July, August 9.30 am - 6.30 pm

In winter many rooms and floor are closed. The open rooms are largely reconstructed with orribile mannequins. nothing interesting to see in winter but you pay the ticket anyway. only 1 guided tour in German at 5PM. avoid, don't waste your time!!!!!

The castle is located between downtown and ski resort. Between December and March the museum opens after 16:30 - the closing time of the ski-lifts at Grosseck- Speiereck ski resort.

I think the castle is more beautiful from the outside than the inside. Friendly people and good guide give tours in the tower, but the tower is fully renovated with fire glass inside so the old look and feel is a little bit gone. Nice for small children or a rainy day. Free entrance with lungau card and audio tour in own language.

If you are in the area, this is a great castle to visit. I went in October for a visit to the castle itself, then again in December to visit the Christmas market there. It's a beautiful castle with some great history - the exhibition on Hermann Göring was fascinating. (If the exhibition is no longer there, look up the history of Göring and the castle).
I used the audio guide, and there was a dress up section for children (or adults who aren't embarrassed!)
In December, the castle itself was closed but you can walk around it if you go to the Christmas market, which is really nice.
I wouldn't necessarily make a special visit here, but if you are nearby, it is worth a trip :)

Definitely a nice visit for 1-3 hours. After some time I switched off the audio guide to explore the castel myself. Nice for children because there is a room with medieval garb. Children as well as grown ups can put on those clothing.

This is actually a very fun Castle and great for the entire family. I would have like to have seen the Chapel but it was locked. The audio tour describes everything in side but you can't see anything. Their is a room where you can dress up and take pictures with dressed mannequins which is very fun. They are still renovating parts of the Castle so not all is accessible. You get to explore quite a lot though. Great day outing.
