Extensive medieval town with good shops, bars and restaurants. Climb from port to the top and enjoy amazing views of the coast.

The Parco Nazionale del Gargano - actually a peninsula - has lots of amazing sights, towns and landscapes. It's just fun to drive around in this area. Peschici is a fascinating small old town worth visiting.
And then there is Vieste. A lot bigger than Peschici, but both being white-washed towns (at least the Historic Centers).
This town is well worth a visit and worth a (longer) drive. Especially the Centro Storico is a must-do (besides the beach and Promenade). The Centro Storico (or Borgo Antico) is easy to find when coming from the Corso Lorenzo Fazzini. Just follow this big street to the Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and access the historic Center from there; the small lane Corso Umberto leads right into the maze of the Centro Storico.
Around this area there are some souvenir shops and a good number of restaurants. When you walk deeper into the old town, it gets less touristy. People live here in their houses and apartements. So be a bit respectful. But it's nice just to stroll around and get lost once in a while. Be aware though that parts are quite steep and many lanes have longer stairs, might not be suitable for everybody. Once you reach the top around the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, you can take the Via Cesare Battisti back to the new town (a lot of restaurants on this street), where you should head to the beach for the nice Promenade and some good views of the Historic Center sitting on the cliffs.

Not surprisingly there is a fort capping this dominating promontory. Although it may be picturesque it is not accessible. We love the places that purvey local foodstuffs and spices in the town. It is a heady explosion of color and aromas and loud friendly conversation.

The history of Vieste really comes alive as you wander the historic center and stroll along the upper and lower seaside walls. Don't miss the stone where pirates slaughtered the population in the 1500s, or the upper walkways where you can look out over the ocean, see a traditional fishing platform, and easily recall the way life would have been during a time when walled defenses made all the difference. The historic center has many charming alleyways and low passages that evoke a different time.

This is a fascinating jumble of different types of buildings, including private houses, small shops hotels and the cathedral and the castle at the peak. The ascent is not too steep and most streets are not wide enough for cars, though look out for the occasional madcap bicycle. Photo opportunities abound and there are several good coffee stops, one of the best of which is outside the Hotel Seggio which serves the best coffee in Vieste.

Located on the cliffs overlooking the Adriatic the old city is a beautiful place to stroll. There are plenty of places to eat and drink and innumerable souvenir shops. You will find many photo ops. Most streets are for pedestrians only.

Overlooked by the castle (which is a military installation, thus not open to the public), the old city center boasts several small shops mostly selling the local delicacies.
Very quiet strolling, with great views of the sea. The day was overcast, nonetheless we had a great time.

We had lunch here and took in the local ambiance as a bonus. For starters I enjoyed some calamari that was fried just perfect with the right amount of crispiness. Then I enjoyed a local favorite of orecchiette with rapini and baked bread crumbs in a light drizzle of olive oil. Absolutely delicious! The view of the ocean and surroundings was spectacular!

It is not certain that the ancient city remembered by Ptolemy can be identified with current Vieste, the fact remains that the Apulian village still retains evidence of its ancient origins today. The narrow alleys with steps between white houses, which run through the town perched on a rocky spur, are very suggestive. In summer they are invaded by tourists attracted not only by their beauty but also by the numerous commercial and restaurant activities. At certain times, especially in the evening, it is very difficult to find parking. The main one is located in the port area, however, despite being very large, it is not enough to accommodate all tourists.
