This church is nestled amongst an old cemetery. Both make for an interesting visit. The cemetery is made up of hundreds of little houses/churches for the deceased. The church is empty, but beautiful. We had trouble finding the church on foot. However found it by walking along via Nursina, then crossing under the freeway using the pedestrian path. Follow the... More

A bit out of town (we walked), and we had the church all to ourselves. the massive construction and simplicity of the remaining decor are very inpressive.

This is a World Heritage site and has been well cleaned. Unfortunately it has very little by way of information available and I find it very sad that what there is only makes clear how much that is beautiful has been lost through either neglect or vandalism. What is left has a sort of haunting beauty enhanced by the proximity... More

Parts are a wonderful example of palaeochristian jerry-building with mismatched lumps of pillar propped up on wall stones. It's certainly worth the climb to get here from Piazza Vittoria (and... San Salvatore is an ancient, often-rebuilt church that overlooks a small, but impressive monumental cemetery. It is quiet, and full of architectural masterpieces.

What a church! It's not very well mantained, but this gives the basilica the look of an old roman temple. When you arrive there, a 10' walk from Spoleto's north end, you see nothing special , but when you go inside, the view is stunning: roman columns and capitals. And, best of all, it seems that the church looks like... More

Very beautiful Basilica in unassuming town. The excellent condition of the paintings and facade considering the great age were all impressive too. A lovely serene building sited perfectly.
