Chalten Travel arranged this 1 day tour($125 for 2). Our hotel pick up was at 10 AM, joining 9 others for an 9 hour tour by Zoyen Turismo, located across from Hotel Belgrano. At the office, we all confirmed the tour payment and the National Park Entrance(200Ag cash for each of us) before departing 60 km south to Hosteria "cueva De Las Manos" (estancia Turistica). Nothing much here but a half hour wait to collect the box lunches, photo a herd of guanaco, see a couple distant Rhea, and for the others to take a guided 45 minute gully walk (minerals and plants), while we conserved our energy from the cold by staying in the Ford Truck with the driver.
Finally departing south for 60 km (pavement and piste), we a took a 1km trail to an overlook, where the youthful members descended on a 90 minute guided 5km hike to meet up at the National Park Office/Entrance at 3PM. We descended by truck, arriving there at 2PM. We used the restroom, took Pintura Valley photos, and ate our box lunch. When the others did not arrive by 3PM, we older adults met with the Park Staff, donned the required helmets, and began our guided tour with the Parks, bilingual guide and up to 20 tourists.
The 5* tour begins with the 1.5km descent along the rock wall(hanging over 260’ off the river below).
The stony/rocky trail is bordered with a sturdy pine tree rail but safe for adults only as youngsters would easily slip through. The guide stopped at all the necessary rock paintings with detailed explanations and taking questions. The wide tree covered canyon is truly photogenic at this time of day, and the sunlight is lighting up the painted features, all in all a wonderful scenic spot in Santa Cruz and a top UNESCO site.
We returned back uphill into the cold wind for 1.5km, then waited in the park building until we all meet up at 5:30PM for the 100 minute return to Perito Moreno, getting back at our Hotel Kelman at 7:10PM.
In conclusion, the high point is all about the National Park and very little to say positive about Zoyen Tours, basically wasting 3 hours of our time.

My visit to the Cave of the hands was one highlight of my time in Argentina. I stopped over only one day in Perito Moreno, and booked a tour with Zoyen Tourismo. My drive through this dry, spectacular land with its guanacos and ostriches, then trek through the Pinturas river canyon to reach the Cueva de las manos was wonderful.
At the Caves themselves you have English or Spanish speaking tours, with motivated guides who want to convey the wonder of the rock art and history of the place/people.
Claudio of Zoyen Tourismo (who speaks good English as well as his native Spanish) also organised my accomodation and assisted with transport - I recommend his agency. Looking at all the other possibilities of places to visit around Perito Moreno and Los Antiguos, in retrospect, I would spend more time in this unique part of the world.

I must admit that our experience was impacted by the attitude of the guides in this place: despite having a guide who could speak excellent English on-site, they chose to send us off with a Spanish-only speaking one with a huge group from the bus - whilst the one who was able to communicate chose to rest in their shed.
This was particularly annoying as apparently there was much to be heard and shown (the tour lasted for about an hour), so we were slightly put off by the attitude of the staff there - who could not be bothered to be good enough towards people who drove for hours to see their sight...
and it would probably take either a lot of special interest in this stuff, or rich imagination to fully appreciated the significance of those paintings...

A part of a group we had camped at less than half an hour away. This is a cultural tour set in a beautiful canyon. The tour leader was very hard to understand and presentation of the site while fenced of for historical reasons could be enhanced with more display boards. Make sure once the tour is completed to continue walking to the end to an observation point. Beautiful view. The site is a UNESCO heritage site.

"Cueva de las Manos" takes you back in time to a moment in history when aboriginal tribes devoted their time and effort to illustrate their daily lives, their rituals and beliefs on the walls of the gorge. It is certainly a very interesting visit, not only for the cultural aspect of it, but also due to the impressive landscape where the paintings are displayed.
Totally worth visiting!

The "cave" is really a series of overhangs that protect the art below. The paintings cover several thousand years of migration through the valley and they have identified three different periods: 7,000 to 5,000 years ago; 5,000 to 3,500 years ago and: 3,500 to 1,000 years ago. The park is a bit off the road and the road is all dirt with deep gravel in some spots but worth the trip out to see it.

Tours are given roughly every hour. The location is not very remote but part of the road (about 30km?) is not paved and there is plenty of guanacos and other wildlife to enjoy, and the terrain itself is a view.
Going by yourself is not an option, you have to go with a guide. This is done to prevent vandalism. The tour was interesting and the guide pointed out the things that I might have missed, not only the speculations over the hand-prints but also the history of the local tribes and the connection of the cave to the local landscape and the hunting practices.

Great to see they are preserving indigenous paintings but not much to see. There is an audioguide that doesn't explain anything about the paintings. The last 10 min of it (out of 50min) are worth it as they tell you about the Teuelche communities and how they lived.

Hi, We are travelling to puerto Madryn and then onto el Calafate, and would like to see the cave of the hands some time during our trip. What is the best way of getting to the cave either on way or from one of these destinations?
