If you have children, they will really enjoy this tour showing old mines architecture and the resources of this island. It's done by a little train, it takes not so much time and it's cheap. Shop is containing some nice souvenirs.

Rio Marina is a lovely little town on the North East of the island. We visited on market day (Monday) which was great as lots of stalls to explore. Nice shady playground too. Recommend driving through the town and parking in the free car park on the right (about 5-10 mins walk back). Go to the museum and buy your train ticket for the mining tour (two trips in the morning then again at 4.30pm and 6pm). You get on the little train which takes you up through the surrounding hills. When you get to the top, the kids are given a hammer and a bag - they can then dig away and keep whatever they find. Ours absolutely loved it despite getting a bit filthy - loads of shiny rocks to take home. Museum is worth a look too.

Better to book one day in advance. You can visit a small museum in Rio Marina centre. Interesting but without explanations or guides. Then a train brings you up to the mountain, close to the city. Nice view and interesting audio guide. On the top of the mountain the most exciting activity: with a hammer and a bag you can search for minerals. Nice experience. I was expecting to go inside some tunnel, like the one visible in the museum, but all the visit is outside. No guides on the train. The train driver gives some explanation.

We read on internet that we could do a hike around the mines with a starting point from the museum. At the museum we were told that it was not allowed to do it on your own. You can only walk in the park with a guide, but that day there were no possibility to book a visit. At the end we only visited the museum, which is of no interest. Better spend the day somewhere else. We did not see anything of the mines.

Yeah Minerals. HOWEVER take the train ride and get a ride through amazing nature and spectacular views! Which in it self is great, but best is, the stop on the top and you get handed tools to do some mining yourself AND keep the stones. Very nice and extremely informative. We had a great time. Afterwards get a fantastic Gelato almost next door of the Museum.

The museum is much more interesting than the train trip. Better for children than for adults. Rather expensive.

Perfect place to take little kids! Trip by small train guide in English without any doubts and the nature was amazing :-)

After arriving at 0945, things obviously busy due to being August. Got a place on a train your at 1300. So walked around rio marina. Back at 1230 to find train was late due to flat tyre. Then drove up in train with lack of info and poor audio guide. At top no info at all when dropped off, just took a hammer without anyone saying anything and no even what we could find. Hammered for 30 min .. Then train had a flat battery and waited more until bus came to take us back down ... Paying all we did in family of 4 to be driven up a hill and down again with little or no information at all... Just to hit a few rocks with hammers. No guides to explain what we were to find or did find from the left over dumps of material ... A glorified Dotto train to the top of the hill just to come down again... Back at after 1500.after being in rio marina at 0945. A waste of a day... Easier to walk around capoliveri and other places and get a better experience for free ...

A little difficult to find the ticket office which is directly in the museum... the tour starts from the port and arrives at the mines with suggestive passages through vegetation. The stop allows you to take some souvenir stones with a pickaxe provided. The visit to the museum is very informative.

Grazie
Written 2 September 2017

Hi, We're visiting Elba in June and definitely interested in this. But we have a 9 month old with us. Will he be allowed on the train ride?
