- AMsaysThornhill, Canada5,034 contributionsAn Invigorating EscapadeParked on a narrow street and walked up numerous sets of steps and streets to eventually end up at Piazza Duomo. The labyrinth of old town streets, intricate alleys and curving lanes means you can get lost, but it seems all roads lead to the Piazza Duomo and that fabulous church. Great views. Here I saw 19thC Palazzo Arezzo di Trifiletti, Teatro Donnafugata and Chiesa di San Giuseppe – all unfortunately closed during siesta time. There are little trattorias, tiny cafes and bars to sit and enjoy the view and refresh yourself with great food and drinks. On the way out to Modica, I came the wrong way up not one, but two dead end streets and had to reverse out, up hills with barely enough room on either side. I could not open my door fully. I blame the GPSVisited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 13 February 2024
- 680ericRockville, Maryland133 contributionsExcellent getaway spot in SicilyBeautiful old city with stunning views. We stayed just outside Ibla on the central Ragusa side in an Airbnb on the hillside overlooking Ibla. Can’t beat that location if you have a view of Ibla.. Ibla is a collection of very old building and churches that is not overly commercialized though with sufficient restaurants and cafes. We just spent much of the time walking around the streets and getting in our steps. Two days is about sufficient for a visit as you can walk everything in one day and there are only so many churches one can explore over a weekend. As we were here over Easter weekend we were able to catch one of the Good Friday church processions which were very interesting to watch and walk along with for a bit.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 30 March 2024
- pfefmeisterSan Francisco, California4,384 contributionsLovely HikeThis is more of a hike than a walk from the Old Town of Ragusa. Moderately strenuous, its steps all the way up. I didn’t find the destination to be that interesting. There’s one dead action pedestrian street, and the Cathedral. The best part is the view looking back at lower historical town.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 July 2024

We spent the afternoon of August 15th in Ragusa and Ragusa Ibla. We were shocked by the lack of bars along the uphill route to get to the main square of the town. Unfortunately we arrived without water and were expecting several bars open, while in reality we found 3 only 2 kilometers from the car park where they charged us €5 for 2 1-litre bottles of water. I would also add that all the cultural places were closed, despite the presence of many tourists. Ragusa was desolate. It seemed like a ghost town where the natives and the people who worked in those few, very few, open businesses were unpleasant.

Beautiful, well kept, clean and rich in history. I recommend going there in the late afternoon and staying until the evening so as to fully enjoy it with the churches open and then illuminated in the evening. You will find everything from gourmet restaurants to those with traditional cuisine with a good quality/price ratio, menus displayed with prices so as not to find yourself with unpleasant surprises and have the possibility of choosing consciously.

You can park in the car park (area di parcheggio giardino ibleo): parking meter €1 per hour, secure, an agent walks around to check if you have paid correctly.
Go to the Duomo di San Georgio square, you can take the little train for 5 euros, you have to buy the ticket in the small shop next door.
The train goes around the city in 30 minutes which saves you walking.
I recommend

We parked at the bottom of the city as the streets within are not for average drivers like me. And there are quite a few that are for residents only. - with some so narrow there's no room for turning back....! Walking to the top along narrow streets with superb vistas was well worth the hike. Pack plenty of water and be sure to visit one (or a few) of the many quaint restaurants and cafe/bars to re fuel or just sit, chill and let Ibla engulf you. The churches are beautiful both outside and in - but remember to take some clothing to cover shoulders and knees - no shorts or vest tops wearers will gain entry.

Ragusa Ibla is fantastic. There are no other words to describe this beautiful historic center. I recommend taking a tour with the tourist train which in about 30-40 minutes will show you the most significant places in the city, an excellent solution if you are with small children. In addition to the cathedral of San Giorgio with its spectacular staircase, and the course that branches off from here and continues downhill, the Iblei gardens and the Church of the Holy Souls of Purgatory are also worth a visit. The city is very clean and full of trendy places where you can dine. Highly recommended

Drove to Ragusa from Ortigia, nice drive through the countryside but once in Ragusa it was a let down. Not much to see, shop and restaurant people were not very friendly, which has been unique to the other places visited on Sicily.
We chose this city to visit rather than Modica which was a mistake.

Ragusa is a tale of two cities. The first, Ragusa, Ilba, was the center of an independent county from 1091. The old city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, and it was rebuilt as two cities; Ragusa, and Ragusa Superiore, which were united as one city in 1926.
Get lost in Ragusa Ibla, the lower old town. It is home to many baroque buildings like the Duomo di San Giorgio, a grand church with beautiful paintings and stained-glass windows. There are many other churches, palaces, and fountains to enjoy.

We visited and spent three nights at this quietly beautiful place. It is more a tourist venue with only 2000 residents than a living town but it is very beautiful and well worth a visit.
There are many beautiful buildings and very good places to eat although in November, a lot of them are closed due to lack of footfall
We were ready to leave after the second night!

Citta, with its extraordinary beauty and cultural heritage, is one of the undisputed gems of Baroque Sicily. Walking through the stone-paved streets, you find yourself enveloped in an atmosphere of extraordinary elegance and history, where every corner tells a fascinating piece of narrative.
The churches are beautiful, have facades decorated with intricate details catch the eye and invite you to deeper contemplation.
I highly recommend to taste some local specialties.
The scents, the Sicilian colors and the sounds of the vendors that animate the space make each visit unique. Recommendation to see
