According to tales, in this lake is located the gate to the underworld. We came here because saw a documentary of mysteries where the host showed the “gate” with a device measuring the level of carbon dioxide and explained that priests used to placed animals there where they die to show the power but as written before never found that place (most probably off-limits).
This lake is linked to the Golden Bough myth (Aeneid, book 6); there are remains of an old circular structure called temple of Apollo (sibyls worshipped Apollo but is not clear if that was a bathhouse) and there is a tunnel built during the early Roman period that connects with the town of Cumae but it is normally closed for the public. Once Lake Avernus was connected to the sea but a series of earthquakes in the XVI century changed the landscape of the area.
Nowadays is more a tranquil lake where locals jog, bike, dog walk, birdwatch, not particularly attractive for a foreigner specially if traveling with a tight itinerary because time is precious. But if there is a special occasion that they open that tunnel with live reading excerpts of all the myths connected with this lake with Cumae historical tour, wine tasting and happen to be here in the area, it will be a great opportunity.

Easy walk around the lake. Nice lakeside restaurant but on Sundays book or go early otherwise you will not get in!

Good view when driving past to Cumae. Easy to see why the Romans thought it was such a special place.

easy to go and you may rent car for going to nearest villages, many places for espresso coffee and sight seeing. Since we visit place as a ceremonial team group to Magna Grecia every year we have many activities to this special place where geodetic fields are extremely bizarre

If you take the train to Luciano, you get off at the station on the beach (you can take a quick peak) and then walk the 15 minutes up to the very historically significant lake. There are the ruins of the Temple of Apollo there as well. The walking path is well maintained and well used around the lake. It is just a relaxing and pleasant place. Not worth a special trip, but very nice if you are in the area.

If you're there for the history, it's good for a nice walk around the lake and the ruins to poke around now that they're open to the path. On weekends they limit the already limited areas where cars can go, so it's a safe place to run, even with animals or a stroller. It's busy with locals out for exercise and there are a handful of restaurants and a couple of agroturismos on the lake as well.

This is a good place to walk your dog or just get some exercise. The trail takes you past ruins and some vineyards. The trail is wide and I use our jogging stroller with no issues. During the week it is very peaceful but on the weekends it gets very crowded and parking can be an issue. Also lots of joggers and cyclists on the weekends so if your dog has issues with either of those it may be better to go on a weekday.

We stopped here as part of a private tour of the area. That way it was no trouble to get there but just to get out of the car and listen to what our driver told us about the history of the area.
It is a beautiful view from above and we could also see the farmers working away in their lands next to the lake. A pretty place to enjoy

This was a great spot for a dog walk around the lake (very full after the recent rains), and a delicious traditional lunch in le cantine. Drop off the Tangenziale Lago d'Averno exit, head uphill on the SP303 towards Cuma and take the left immediately off the roundabout down the steep ramp. We arrived around eleven, parked under an orange tree, and walked down to the lake through the gate specifically for le cantine. Past the Tempio d'Apollo, and 30 mins round the pretty lake, then it was time to be the first to sit and wait for the delights, which simply kept on coming. Highlights were the tuna potato salad, braised cabbage, and definitely the fried fish - probably sprats, simply delicious, all washed down with a bottle of most quaffable on-site produced Falanghina. No specific figures to list, as it would be rude, but the cost to enjoy great food, over a delightful pace, with charming 'Domenica lunch' company, was something we'll be back for more of. Wonderful, Vergil himself would have been proud.
