About
Framed by colorful houses built into the surrounding cliffs, Spiaggia Grande is the main beach of Positano. Rent a sunbed and go for a dip in the refreshing clear turquoise waters. Then, hop on a boat tour or make your way through the town up to Via Cristoforo Colombo Overlook—both offer brilliant views of the Amalfi Coast from different perspectives. If you're looking to escape the crowds, try Fornillo Beach, a 10-minute walk away. Regardless, get in early to nab yourself a good spot for the day, and bring footwear for the small stones that make up the beaches. – Tripadvisor

- Georgia MLincoln, United Kingdom482 contributionsBeautiful but heavingI have a mixed view on this. The views from the sea back into the cliff are gorgeous (along with the sea itself), but it’s absolutely absurd that around 80-85% of the beach if not more is taken up by empty beach clubs charging crazy amounts for a sunbed and the tiny space which is free leaves everyone packed and cramped in like sardines. I think it’s definitely going to put people off going which is a shame because it’s beautiful. But what’s the use if you can’t enjoy the sea or beach freely (or have to pay through the nose to enjoy it).Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 16 September 2023

- Herbert C1,744 contributionsA beach with a spellbinding viewAlthough Spiaggia Grande is the main beach of Positano, it is not anyone's idea of a beach paradise, with its greyish sand and extortionate prices to rent a sunbed and umbrella. Despite that, this mere 400 metres stretch of beach will still leave you spellbound because of its enchanting surroundings. Standing at the centre of the beach, you're surrounded by a kaleidoscope of colors - from the pastel pink, yellow and white hues of the houses stacked on the cliffside, the colorful majolica-tiled dome of Church of Santa Maria Assunta, the greenish brown of the imposing Lattari Mountains and of course the turquoise sea. With such breathtaking vista, no wonder they say that Positano is a stunning work of pure Italian art. Pure magic!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 January 2024

Residents and paying customers only - after half an hour walking downhill, followed by 40 minutes walking uphill, disappointed.
If you visit Positano, stay up high with that beautiful view - pick one of the pizzerias on the way down the hill and have lunch, then get your car and go to Amalfi or Sorrento.
Just don't bother going to the bottom.

You cannot visit the Amalfi coast and not visit this beach. The views of Positano are immaculate and the water was warm (end of august). It’s 30 euro per sun bed which is pretty expensive but honestly it was so worth it. They had multiple pedal boats floating close-ish to the shore which made it an easy spot for some dives and flips. We also ate at the restaurant so we gained wifi access that way but otherwise I am not sure if you can get wifi here.

The main beach in Positano. It is pretty much divided in 4 areas - paid beach club, only residents and 2 public areas that anyone can access.
The public areas are located on the extremes ends of the beach, residents and beach club centre.
In the public area you don't need to pay anything and any corner will do. As we knew we would be travelling around the Italian coast, we brought beach towels with us and our Airbnb provided a beach umbrella (small but enough to us to hide from the 38oC summer day).
If you plan to travel around the coast, buy a beach umbrella at any store (about $12 Euros). As the paid beach club charge around 15 Euros a day each beach chair with umbrella.
Spiaggia Grande is not sand, but rocks and during hot days the hot rocks will burn your feet. So wear flip-flops. Everyone walked to the water in flip-flops then left it near the water.

This dark pebble beach is near the port. The view of Positano behind it is lovely. The beach itself though is not pleasant. Most of it is occupied by sun beds which cost 40-50 euros per person and are too close to each other. The public part of the beach was full of cigarette butts and was very overcrowded.

Rude staff. We paid (A LOT) for our seats and could not sit there due to high waves. We spent 20 minutes trying to convince them to let us sit somewhere else or give us a refund. We were sat in a lame spot and were not offered any refund, nor did we get any offer to cover our lunch or a round of drinks. To add to the misery the place is packed with "bros" with zero class. Skip it.

An amazing beach to see in Positano when we got off our ferry boat.
The gorgeous hillside with the houses built right on the cliffs!!
This is the main beach in Positano with it's clear, turquoise water.
I was told it is expensive to rent any of the beach chairs or loungers on the beach.
We were just here for a short time, so we did not get in the water or lay on the beach. Definitely a place to people watch though!!
My husband & I LOVE Italy and this was definitely a place to see but you must see it by boat so you can see how majestic those mountains are!!

Our family visited Spiaggia Grande in the summer of 2019. We had our two daughters with us ages 13 & 6.
The beach with stunning Positano as the backdrop was our destination for one day during our trip down the Amalfi Coast. We got there around 9 in the morning & stayed all day.
We rented chairs & an umbrella on the first row next to the water. It was very hot & the beach is made up of rocks, not sand. In my opinion the chairs and umbrella were necessary, but it will cost ya! It was $85 for two chairs for the day.
They do have nice changing rooms and showers right next to the beach that they did not charge for.
There is a bar on the beach & there are also a few restaurants close by.
The beach itself is made up of rocks which was fine at the beginning of the day, but by the end of the day it was pretty painful to get in & out of the water. I had to crawl out of the water on my hands and knees a few times... yes, it was that painful.
I would not visit this beach again without water shoes. Lesson learned!
There are also jellyfish in the water. We knew there were because there were some little boys pulling them out of the water with nets & leaving them in the rocks. They are little & translucent so it made it challenging to miss them. It was too hot to stay out of the water all together, so we did go in the water to cool off. My youngest daughter did have a run in with a few jellyfish that she didn’t see. They stung her on her arms & neck which was quite painful for her. We weren’t sure how to help her, but when I asked an attendant at one of the beach kiosks for help she gave me jellyfish sting spray. When used it took the sting away almost immediately & the tears stopped.

We used the area to the North of the beach, close to the ferry boarding area, along with a lot of locals. Just take your own towel. Not the best sand - dark and course, so it gets very hot underfoot!
The location and views are spectacular, and several mini markets to get water and beverages to enjoy on the beach. I can imagine it gets busy in peak seasons, but in September 2020 it was perfect, with adequate space between groups/families.
Interesting to watch all the boating activity as well, so plenty going on.

Pouvez-vous nous indiquer comment on réserve pour la plage de Positano svp? Merci
Written 3 August 2022
I don’t think you can reserve a sunbed online, they usually don’t have reservation options in-advance. You can buy one for the whole day at the beach location.

Can you reserve ahead of time cabanas on Spiaggia Grande. We have a family of 15 and would like to rent for one afternoon.

Hi! I have a few questions
1. Can we swim even in the private side of the beach for free?
2. Do we get the same views from the free beach?
3. If we do rent out beach chairs, can we bring our own food and wine?
Thank you!

Is it possible to buy beach chair rentals in advance ? Is this necessary ? Or can you easily rent beach chair when you get there ? Does it get sold out

Are you allowed to swim in the water over on the private side of the beach?
Written 13 October 2018
Yes, you are. Just don't use the deck chairs!
Written 18 February 2019
When does this beach begin renting loungers? Would it be open on the first week of May?
Written 17 June 2018
What time in the morning or during the day do people start arriving to the beach to rent the beach chairs? Please clarify weekend or weekday.

Grazie
