Was here on a cloudy day and can only imagine what it would've been like in a clear day. Some souvenir shops by the water, nicer places up in the tiny streets above the port. But the bay behind the castle, with its massive rocks and crashing waves was the most impressive part of this charming place. Be sure to... More

We sailed down the coast from Sestre Levante admiring the villages of the Cinque Terre en route. Portovenere is a charming place with a castle and wide streets with good restaurants. A favourite place of Lord Byron who famously swam across the bay, it is still popular among swimmers. I think it would be a great base for a holiday... More

Not reachable by train and technically not one of the 5 villages that give the name of the UNESCO site, Portovenere might be easily missed. It is easily reachable by boat from almost every village along the coast, with superb views along the way. It is a mixture of posh and traditional lifestyle, with fancy boats and ruins of a... More

The small village of Portovenere is reachable from La Spezia following the main road that runs along the bay of the city itself (don't follow for five lands). No railway to Portovenere therefore the only public transportation are the buses that you can take from Garibaldi street towards Portovenere (P line). The alternative is to get there by ferries that... More

We had planned on taking a car and driver to Portovenere then take the ferry to Manarola and Vernazza but due to weather issues, we had to drive to all the areas, which limited our time in each port. I was not expecting the beauty of Portovenere when we arrived. Beautiful old buildings, quiet atmosphere and friendly people. It set... More

I fell in love with Portovenere. We travelled from Carrara and the drive was stunning to say the least. The views along the way are amazing. I wanted to stop so many times to take photos. This would be a photographers heaven. The village itself is beautiful. I loved the coloured buildings and the crystal clear waters.

With all the publicity for the Cinque Terra, we were pleasantly surprised that Porto Venere was the highlight of our trip to the Italian Riviera. Be sure to climb to the castle for a great view of the harbor. It's also worth hiking to the ancient church (which is at a lower elevation than the castle). We just did a... More

Porto Venere is one of the best places I've ever visited. Nice town, beautiful sea view and of course you have got to visit the church. I recommend it when in Italy.

Breathtaking and beautiful landscapr even if we visited in a windy and rainy day in the middle or winter.
