About
This island in Italy is a hidden gem that's loved by locals. You'll fall in love with the charming, colorful houses, and lively Ponza Harbor, which is full of shops and great seafood restaurants. Take in the breathtaking view of Palmarola Island from Le Forna, and the stunning landscape of turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs, and sunken caves—the views are exceptionally stunning at sunset. There are also plenty of water activities available like snorkeling, sailing, or boating. You can explore the island on an e-bike, or on a full-day tour from Rome or Anzio, which typically includes lunch and swimming stops. Visit during late spring or early fall for fewer crowds. – Tripadvisor

I was living in a “grotta” in Le Forna called “la casetta sul cortile” . Beautiful small and confortable apt in a typical cave. Amazon experience, the island is magic.

My two daughters (age 9 and 11) spent a weekend in Ponza in Sept 2022. It was the end of the season, just before the island starts hibernation for the off-season. We did see any other Americans the whole time, and were able to get around with our limited Italian and from the generosity of a few locals who spoke English. Our favorite things to do were meandering the twisting streets and popping into the shops and enjoying the sea and swimming from a boat we chartered for a day. We had some delicious meals overlooking the sea. Ponza is similar to Amalfi with few beaches (cliffs instead), but without masses of tourists. Almost everyone you will meet on vacation here is Italian.

We have been regular visitors to Ponza and the neighboring island of Palmarola for almost 20 years. I am absolutely convinced it’s Italy’s most beautiful island; possible competition could only come from some Greek island. Torquoise transparent waters, caves with splashing water, spectacular sunsets, and multi-colored architecture are just a few characteristics of this extraordinary island. While Ponza has become certainly better known than it was 20 years ago, it is still off the beaten track, shunned by mass tourism. A paradise for boating, sailing and snorkeling, but not really a place for beach lovers. Its main beach, Chiaia di Luna, remains closed due to danger of falling rock.

If you are here for beautiful beaches, then this is the place for you.
I would definitely recommend you to book a boat (private post renting) in advance as they get fully booked very quickly. Getting a boat is an amazing way to see the island as some of it’s best beaches cannot even be accessed by land.

You also don’t even need a boat driving license, and a 15-25 power motor boat should be enough for such a small island as ponza!

Unfortunately if you don’t know italian you will have a very hard time communicating and you won’t even be able to do many of the activities of the island as many will just reject you the minute they understand you don’t speak Italian.

The majority of the restaurants on the island served very low quality food except the Big Hotel restaurants that had both great atmosphere and great food selection.

Booking electrical bikes is also a great way to see the island as you get to enjoy the great views and beautiful sunsets of the island. They are also very easy and safe to drive!

Ponza is a stunningly beautiful island, almost like Capri, but it’s expensive and (esp. in summer) very touristy. Public transport does not work well and taxi’s are madly expensive, but taking your car isn’t a wise option;) I’d also suggest to stay away from the Porto area.

Wanted to get away from the 'madding crowds' in early August. Ponza is beautiful and still largely unspoilt, visited more by Romans than foreigners. Would return in a heartbeat.

On the plus side, the Island is stunningly beautiful. We went before high season so it was very calm and very genuine. This place is mostly for Italians spending their holidays. So have no hope for adaptations to mest foreigners needs and wants. A stay here is without compromise, but according to me in a good way. Somewhat pricey to, that can be explained by the fact that this is an island, which likely takes its toll on the cost side for restaurants and hotels as well.
