Orvieta's magnificent Duomo (cathedral) is considered one of the must-see churches in Italy for its stunning gold-and-mosaic Gothic façade and magnificent frescoes by Luca Signorelli, which had a great influence on Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel.

Oh yes, go here. Beautiful cathedral with one of the most endearing statues of the Holy Family and Mary Magdalene I have seen.

The Duomo dominates the central plaza in Orvieto - it's a style that is so unusual and visually arresting that you can't help but stop and marvel at it. The amount of work that went in to building it is amazing to me - especially considering the materials all had to be brought up from below.

At least in February, the Duomo is little visited. Had the famous chapel of San Brizio to ourselves. It is the well preserved masterpiece of Luca Signorelli. The exterior of the Duomo is likewise quite beautiful.

Our 4€ entrance fee gave us access to a beautiful church with very little explanation of its history and importance. Frankly, one wanders around for 10 mins and leaves non the wiser. The frescoes were pretty fabulous, clearly the medieval world was terrified of hell as seen in them. But nothing is explained for the visitor. Don't waste you €2... More

This spacious interior with its fine frescoes and distinctive streaky bacon effect is a must for all architectural and history buffs. The facade preserves the medieval wall carvings but is spoilt by the upper level decorations. Best seen in the sunshine so go in April onwards.

The duomo really, truly is majestic, both inside and out. It does have a ticket you need to pay - most churches in Italy don't - but it is still worthwhile.
