Orvieta's magnificent Duomo (cathedral) is considered one of the must-see churches in Italy for its stunning gold-and-mosaic Gothic façade and magnificent frescoes by Luca Signorelli, which had a great influence on Michelangelo's work in the Sistine Chapel.

Impressive church with an ornate interior and exterior. Certainly worth a visit if you're in Orvieto. There are separate entrances for visitors and congregants, the former has to pay an entrance fee. While the church is spectacular, I loved the Pietá like sculpture done by a student of Michelangelo who used the same techniques as his master to create folds... More

Strikingly historic. Beggars and hawkers of cheap toys and pictures are everywhere and constantly interrupt pleasant walks.

The spectacular Cathedral di Santa Maria Assunta; Duomo di Orvieto, a Romanesque-Gothic, stripped marble similar to Pisa. The facade is truly beautiful. The combo ticket 5E allowed access to cathedral and MODO museum. Exploring the church's interior, we viewed: Sienna-style Baptismal Font 1390-1407; Gentile da Fabriano's 1425 “Madonna Enthroned with Child and Angels;” Fra Angelico and Signorelli's famed masterpiece, Last... This Duomo is a real roman jewel in Umbria, near Rome; On a tuf and chalky hill is nested this little town Orvieto on more as 300 m of altitude; I saw this town from very faraway perched on a hill; the tower of the Dome has 12 sides; The gothic Dome is in center of town, and is a... More

If you are a fan of European churches, a visit to the cathedral in Orvieto should be on your list. Magnificent inside and out, it is not to be missed.

There is a cost to enter this site. It is a small cost, and worth the fee. You can adequately see all the sites inside in less than an hour. There are written hand guides in English. The guide says "a cathedral like no other in the world". I guess that is true for every cathedral, but if you are... More

We approached the duomo from the side and were just amazed at how beautiful the facade is. The detail in the mosaics and sculptures is great and reminded us of the duomo in Florence. The corporal from the Eucharistic Miracle in Bolsena is kept here and Signorelli's paintings in the San Brizio Chapel are a definite sight to see!

It's beautiful in the outside but equally as pretty inside with its side chapels. Worth the €3 entrance fee. Priests don't pay

The Duomo of Orvieto can be seen, standing above the city, for many miles before you reach the town of Orvieto itself. It is definitely a reason to visit and to marvel at the beauty of the facade and the artwork in the interior!

Milano, Roma, Firenze duomos etc are great and well known but this list is never complete if you have not visited Orvieto Duomo. Enough said.
