About
karst cave located just one kilometer from the city center of Montecatini Terme. immersed in a large natural park that contains other small surprises like an ancient gunpowder deposit made more than 100 years ago in an active natural cave and a small climbing wall the structure has ample parking, bar and restaurant service the main cave is a place of winter hibernation by a colony of bats, hence the choice to close early November to reopen more or less in the Easter period

What a lovely place to visit. The staff are really friendly and helpful. Anna the guide was so enthusiastic and explained all the features of the cave really well and made it interesting. It’s a good walk from Montecatini Terme but there is a bus if you don’t fancy it.

An absolutely amazing experience! The grottoes are beautiful, strange and breathtaking - like nothing else you will usually see in Toscana! It’s lit very beautifully so it’s easy to see the stalagmites and it feels safe - not at all scary or unpleasant, but one still feels the strange magic of this hidden world under ground. The guide, Anna, was extremely knowledgeable and spoke perfect english and gave us a great tour. She told us both about the incredible age of the site, the geology, the animals and about the story of this place during the wars. Everyone in our family, both children and adults, agreed that this was one of the best excursions we have had during our holiday. Also it was a great break from the sun and heat - the grotto is a pleasant, cool 15 degrees. We have been to Montecatini-Terme several times but never went to the grotto before. There are no signs advertising it, so it’s a bit of a well kept secret. The gps had a bit of trouble finding it, but we went a little further up the road and easily found the gate saying “Grotto Maona” in big letters. There a big area for parking under the shady trees outside and a lovely bit of park around it, for taking a stroll before sitting down at the restaurant for a coffee and snack.

Just got back home from a very nice two week holiday in Venice and Tuscany. And I need to highlight our visit to Grotta Maona. Actually we had a hard time finding the place, since google and tripadvisor didnt show the right placements, and one place said it was closed. But we luckily found it and had the greatest experience!
(Attached to this review is a map trying to specify where they are)
We were the only two persons to show up for the tour (they try to make tours every half hour as people gather), but still Francesco gave us the tour and did everything he could to make our tour special! He told us this was his tour 7 or 8 of the day but that was not to see or feel. So friendly, professional, informative as one could wish for and although I have seen bigger caves in Europe this tour was sooo great mainly because of all the information Francesco gave us. A really must do in the area if you need an hour out of the sun (or the rain).
They also have a restaurant with a great and cheap menu. Several times a week they also arrange evening suppers with music (remember to book).
Entrance was 7€ to the cave, which was well worth the experience.
Anyone can do the tour and you can do it in flippers if you like, but I would recommend sneakers or alike due to a few slippery steps.
Huge carpark.
A MUST SEE AND DO! And a huge shout out to Francesco - such a great guide!

A little difficult to reach without a car but if you feel safe walking up and down hill on the side of narrow roads then you will be rewarded by this small complex. We had a young local guide who escorted our mixed group of Brits, Spanish and Germans and her linguistic skills were good enough to show and explain the small complex. We all had to wear safety helmets which was just as well because it was a little cramped at times and heads were banged! Oh, the price was €7 each. It was quiet while we were there and the restaurant/ cafe was not open.
There is a large car park

A very manageable walk from the center of Montecatini. Quite a small cave but very interesting. There were only 8 or 9 people on the tour so it was quite intimate. The guide was very passionate about the cave and he spoke perfect English. A good way to spend an hour or so.

Visited a cave that's been formed for 15 million years, it's a living cave where stalactites grow at a pace of 1 centemetre per 100 years. The temperature is at a constant of 15 degrees Celsius throughout a year, in winter and in the summer. Mind-blowing!

We were struggling in the early July heat, so a cave system seemed like a great bet. And it was! Our guide was a student in the tourism industry and we got lucky that when we arrived we were the only ones, so we got a private tour. She was a very natural guide and had us laughing several times with her descriptions of the different rock formations. Definitely take the helmets seriously! I bumped my head a little bit while wearing one, but I'm only 5'4" My husband, who's almost a foot taller than me, must just be more careful than I am!

We walked from the town to the grotto up a steep'ish hill that gave great views. The grotto was a fun tour with a knowledgeable and friendly guide, who did it in English and Italian. Only downside is we should have covered ourselves in bug repellent as the local gnats took some big bites. Would recommend it for families who like a bit of a hike (30 to 40 minutes there, quicker downhill back)
