Cave di Pomice or Porticello beach was not very pleasant. We took the bus there and walked down to find nothing of the white beach created by the pomice that was there a few years ago. Just grey pebbles and rocks. The water was fine but the whole experience was a waste of time and we had to run back up the steep hill to get the infrequent bus on time. The backdrop is an industrial wasteland of the old pomice mine which was interesting as my Nonno worked there but it’s not the most attractive backdrop. Lipari is not known for its beaches but give this one a miss.

Reached the beach by scooter. The white pomice wall in contrast with the emerald blue sea were breathtaking. It's not very big, many locals frequent the beach. Huge sea glass on this beach for collectors!!!!

Porticello once monopolised the global supply of Pumice. Indeed Pumice and Obsidian outcrops are the reasons Lipari was first settled in Neolithic times. The Pumice mountain Monte Pilato has been extensively quarried and enormous white scars mark the Northern flanks. Today the quarries are no longer economically viable and are closed. The coastline is littered with the vestiges of the former industry - processing plants and docks. The sites could be an interesting industrial archaeology centre telling the story of Pumice but no public access is permitted. The quarries are gated and fenced off, the buildings boarded up. The site is best viewed from the sea.

Not every day you can see the sea close to mine of pumice stone, so I think that is a particular place where to go in Canneto (Lipari). A small tip: don't go if there is wind because the dust could be annoying.

We were very disappointed when we visited this area
The white Cliff's were interesting but the beach was stoney like all the others
We walked down a very steep pathway which was scary only to discover we could have had a lift for free !!

I took a boat tour from Lipari to Salina and this was one of the stops. Beautiful location for a swim from the boat. It's an old Pumice Quarry that has long been abandoned, The beach is covered in white rocks and the waters are beautiful but beware of jelly fish.

From Lipari you can see this on a boat trip. It doesn't stop and carries on to all the other Aeolian islands

Dont be fooled by the pictures on internet, it is more grey than white. I hink that is really strange place for beach but definitely must see. Water is clear, you can get there by bus.

Amazing my kids really loved this place and brought geology to life. Also they has great fun looking for Obsedian rocks among st the vast amounts of pumice. Also snorkeling looked like you were swimming just above the moon surface.

hi, was thinking of spending 3 days 3 nights in lipari as our base and seeing stromboli by cruise at night and vulcano as a day trip but is there more things to see on lipari to amuse ourselves the rest of the time. or should we go to vulcano for day trip, arrive lipari stay overnight, see stromboli at night and spend one day on lipari and head back to sicilily and spend more time on big island?

Hello!
We just came from Taormina and I would spend majority of your time here! The Aeolian islands are nice but nothing compared to Australian beaches. I would do two nights/days in Lipari. It’s an absolute must to hire a boat and see the island from this perspective. If it wasn’t for the boat trip I don’t know that I would think a lot of Lipari!
Good luck :)

Costo 2,30 € circa a/r. Attenzione !

Grazie a chi risponderà
Written 21 June 2017
