I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to visit La Cartapesta during a one week stay in Puglia. I had watched a show on Puglia that featured La Cartapesta and the three brothers who are all masters in the ancient art of paper mache.
My husband and I were strolling through the city when we came upon the shop. We were both so excited that we'd 'found' the shop!
We knew we wanted to purchase one of the beautiful hand made 'figurines' made right there in the shop by owner Claudio Riso who kindly allowed me to take photographs while we were there. My only regret is that I neglected to take one of the figurine I ended up purchasing!
There were a number of figurines of dancers of the pizzicata, a traditional folk dance from the Salento region, that I liked but my heart fell in love with an angel wearing a lovely soft pink gown and that's the one I ended up with. I may eventually end up ordering one of the dancers on line one day!
Prices vary and the one I purchased was 80 euros. We were lucky to have gone in when we did because as we were making our purchase, which Claudio signed and dated, a huge group on a tour came in filling the shop to capacity.
Good luck Claudio for continued success. And tourists, I highly recommend you stop here. My husband really isn't in to things like this, but even he was impressed! If you have found this review to be helpful, kindly let me know by clicking below.

You can watch him creating his beautiful pieces of art. He is so kind and so talented! We bought a fairly expensive piece because we wanted a memory. That is what you are buying here, true art that will be an heirloom reminder of your visit to this wonderful town of Lecce. What better way to support an artist? His shop is so entertaining, definitely one of the top highlights of Lecce.

We went for a tour of LaCartapesta di Claudio Riso. In the 1-1/2 days I was in Lecce, I visited the shop four times. Everything is magnificent and I am looking forward to receiving the two unique items I purchased. If I had more luggage I would have purchased more, however, Claudio made it less stressful for me by shipping my items and I can't wait till they arrive. The brothers' work is superior! I just ordered three more items a few minutes ago (Claudio, I sent you an email.) And I have an item on my 'wish list.' Be sure to stop by to browse, see the magic happen, and even purchase something beautiful and representative of this beautiful culture. Ciao, Francesca

Whatever you do when you are in Lecce, be sure NOT TO MISS this cartapesta shop. The owners, three sweet brothers, will let you step back into their laboratory to see the actual application of the ancient art of cartapesta, which is making a huge comeback these days. Their shop houses the best collection of statuettes and mis en scene Nativity and Pugliese traditional "theater."

While on a tour of Lecce, Italy we were taken to this shop and what a gem it was. The craftsmanship is hands above any that we found in town or in Italy for that matter. After the tour my wife and I went back to the shop to make a purchase and were treated like old friends. We were taken into their workshop/studio and given an in depth look at how they make their figures. It was all very interesting. After making our purchase we made arrangements with the shop owners to ship our newly purchased Nativity set home to Arizona. True to their word, they shipped a large box via FedEx and it arrived in perfect shape. Upon opening the box we found each piece of the Nativity set individually wrapped and boxed to insure safe travels.
If you find yourself in this wonderful shop be sure to ask about the "secret garden" you will NOT be disappointed.
This was truly one of our favorite vacation memories topped only by the heirloom Nativity set we purchased. What could be better than leaving a shop knowing that you just made two new friends.

Maybe for it's strange but, for us , it's a pleasure to see people come back again to tell us only hello Claudio and Brothers.
Few weeks ago, A man that came in my workshop teen years ago, came with his wife who is pregnant. I felt so happy that he remembered me and show me his family.

While all of Lecce is amazing this is a must-do. Check out YouTube to see the process that each hand made figure goes through until it ready for the shop. Each is a work of love, skill, and art. You will find Claudio Riso on Via Vittorio Emanuele II. Such a great experience and every day I gaze at our figures and smile.

Spoke to Giuseppe Riso regarding his shop's fame following the short feature on Dreams of Italy (dreamofitaly.com/tv-show/puglia at approx. minute 5:30). He works with his brothers, Claudio & Sandro, and says (mostly in Italian) that he'll be "famous" when Obama calls him.

This shop makes sculptures in paper mache that you have to see to believe. AND you get to watch the art being created by one of the 3 brothers right there in the work area. The way the ancient art is brought to life is something you'll never see anywhere else. Stop in for a look, and maybe a purchase. You won't believe it!!!

Lecce is know for its paper mache. Claudio Riso's shop is the epicenter of the work. You can see how they do it, and purchase some of his incredible work.

While in Puglia, we made a special visit to Lecce for the primary purpose of visiting Cartepesta Riso -- the studio, to see the incredible creations of Claudio, Guiseppe and Sandro Riso. I had watched the videos and read every article I could find on these incomparable paper mache' artisans before traveling to Italy and imagined the possibility of finding their studio and seeing their work. I can tell you it was ... magical. Never thinking I might have the chance to meet any of the brothers, imagine the excitement of being greeted by Guiseppe! I was overwhelmed not only by the works that surrounded me, but by the kindness and warm welcome of Guiseppe. That day, I officially began my Riso brothers' collection of master works. Yes, my hopes went from simply finding their studio, to "adopting" FIVE of my favorite pieces. I will cherish the memories of seeing their creations, no less than my visit with Guiseppe. They are MASTER artisans, and as gracious as their work is stunning. I highly recommend making the time to experience a visit and of course, gifting yourself with one of their works (or 5!!), as it is a once-in-a-lifetime memory to cherish.

Hi, we saw your shop in the episode of Dream of Italy. We were taken by your paper mâché figures of the older couple celebrating their 50th anniversary. We have just recently celebrated our 50th anniversary and would like to purchase the figurines. Please let us know if this is possible and how online.

Can we view items for sale and order/purchase from the shop if we are not in Lecce but in the United States? The website listed on Trip Advisor cannot be accessed.
