Just looks alike, the towers, the lifting bridges, the water all around ( full of big carp fish) and that red stone color so typical of Ferrara. Il Castello is the heart of the city from where you will then walk passed the Duomo and then straight through the luttle shopping streets such as Via Mazzina, San Romano, Bersaglieri del... More

A great experience to visit this stunning building. A climb to the top of the tower for superb views over Ferrara.

The Este family castle is an imposing structure. Surrounded by a wide moat it seems to be occupying an island. By way of a drawbridge you can get inside the courtyard. We were pressed for time so we didn't tour the interior chambers.

It is impressive. Beautiful 14th century castle modified in 16th to make it less warlike adding balconies and removing the eastern entrance. The rooms are mostly empty and some places have graffiti but there are a lot of things to be seen and nice frescos; it is worth a visit.

Explanations in italian and good English. 8 euros is good value and allows you also to get a great view from one of the towers. Only negative was the state of the toilets.

We visited on our first day in Ferrara and loved it. The frescoes are beautiful. The explanations are clear. We didn't go into the turret because of rain but will come again.

Of all the museums to visit in Ferrara, this is it. The 14th century fortress is a joy. The art displayed is the best in town, something for everyone. We visited other museums, but frankly, this was the best hands down.
